We did the tough but worthwhile Fish eagle trail with some beautiful views over the Umtamvuna valley.

The trail was beautiful but the Reserve were not able to provide us with a map at the start. The lady said that the trails were easily marked. This was true till you get to the bottom of the river. No clearly marked trail to show you how to make your way up from the bottom. We tried calling the Reserve from the number on the their website, no answer. We arrived back at the reserve after dark and no one was there to check if we arrived safe or called us. They had locked up and gone home. Lots of snakes on this trail, massive baboons that prevented us from walking pass.

This reserve is one of Southern Natal's best kept secrets. Off the beaten track, it offers amazing walks down to the Umtamvuma river. With views of the sea and rolling hills of the former Transkei one can either walk along the hill tops from the upper entrance to the lower entrance about 10 kms away, or descend to the river down a steep kloof and enjoy swimming in the pools below. It's a rigorous bit of exercise either way, but really enjoyable and well worth the drive to Port Edward. The entrance fee is affordable. Take water and snacks with you, and a hat as it can get really hot out there.

.. then a visit to Umtamvuna is well-worth the effort. There are a number of different hikes (short and long) to choose from. Beautiful views and even some animals to be seen. Entrance fee is R30 pp unless you park at the Pont Gate which is unmanned. The southern part also offers great hikes (ranging from 30 minutes to 3 hours), mostly in riverine forest. A (free) map is, however, only available from reception at the main gate

Drove past the reserve and decided to go for a long walk. What a surprise. The office was neat and tidy but no official was present. Lovely sandstone formations and flowers all over. Will definitely go back and spend more time there

My husband and I visited the reserve that is past Beaver Creek Coffee Estate (not the one further down towards the Eastern Cape border). We had a wonderful day hiking along this route. The hike down, along the gorge's steep sides, towards the Bulolo River, and back up the gorge is definitely not for the faint hearted. This narrow route does zig zag along the steep incline of the gorge. When you make your way back up the sides of the gorge, there are certain parts of the route where you need to use the deep, rooted trees and rocky interface to help you climb and follow the trail. The trail is clearly marked with markers that have a picture of a porcupine on it. The scenery overall is...amazing!!! The staff member at the environment centre was helpful and friendly and this centre has information about the geology, vegetation and animals found in the reserve. The facilities are also clean. The entrance fee to the reserve is R20 per person, which you pay at the centre. This hike should take 3 hours to complete, but prepare for it to be 4 - 4,5 hours long, especially if you take photos along the route or sit and relax on the many boulders along the river. A worthwhile and wonderful hike - would do this again!

Umtamvuna Nature Reserve near Port Edward offers strenuous hiking tours and is a dictionary of Southafrican botany for tree huggers. Parking is free at the main gate, but there is no parking attendent. From the main gate, we choose the porcupine route. You can choose between trails (round trips) of 3 to 8 hours walking length. At many trees you pass on the tour, you will read a name badge with the English, Africaans and Xhosa name. So many strange plants. You will not see all 385 species of woody plants growing here, but at least many of them. The path was well signposted. No chance/risk to get lost. Most of the trails offer a steep descend into the gorge. To get back to the car, you will have to ascend through the gorge again on another route.
People say there is bushbuck, serval, baboon, samango monkeys, blue and grey duiker and common reedbuck in the reserve. Well, we did not see them.

We visited Umtamvuna with 2 kids under 2. We opted for a 2 hour hike which was beautiful and pretty easy to do with 2 young kids in hiking carriers. The scenery was breathtaking and this was a great introduction to nature and hiking to our kids.
The office was deserted upon arrival and we waited for a while before we could buy hiking passes. We also struggled to find rubbish bins anywhere in the park.
This is a good day outing for families.

Mtavuna Nature Reserve is only 3200ha large, but contains more rare trees than anywhere else in Southern Africa. There are 1400 species of flowering plants. Of these about 385 woody plants such as shrubs and trees. Enough said? Brush up on your botany skills in four languages: each tree along the trails is labelled, courtesy of SAs internationally leading botanists! Anyways, whether you want to go hiking for sports, fauna, flora, adventure, encounters, discoveries, this place has it all. The trails are well signposted so you won't get lost. You can go for a dip in the stream on a hot day. Bilharzia (see previous review) is more likely to occur in standing water so don't be scared. To help you chose the right trail, there will be a pamphlet at the office in Beacon Hill (see previous review) which is the main entrance to the reserve. I wish this pamphlet was available online! The second entrance to the reserve is at the estuary called Pont. I did the Fish Eagle trail on day 1 (starting from Pont) and the ingungumbane (porcupine in English) trail on day 2 (starting from Beacon Hill). I took much longer than the time mentioned on the pamphlet because I stopped for breaks often. It is amazing how nature reveals its beauty in a moment of peace and quiet. The trails are very safe and super well maintained. Go and experience this incredibly luscious and yet accessible piece of Africa.
