When you enter the building, there's a warm welcoming atmosphere. The works of art are extremely beautiful and amazing. The sculptures are well made and makes you realize how well crafted they are. There is a coffee shop where you can sit and enjoy a meal, while taking a break. There's lots to see. You will truly enjoy your visit, just as I did. I've been to the Gallery about 4 times already.

L'accueil est très agréable et les œuvres exposées très intéressantes (il y avait même une vente aux enchères quand nous y sommes allés - idée originale, bravo). Le bâtiment à lui seul est très beau.
Il y a un café et la possibilité de manger sur place, ainsi qu'un petit shop d'artisanat.
C'est gratuit, mais faites un don pour aider à l'entretien de ce type de bâtiment d'époque et de lieu culturel ;-)

This art gallery is housed in a beautiful old building which was once a law court. Yet it is quite difficult to find, although it is more or less opposite the Town Hall. Enormous rooms, each with its own character and style of exhibition. A wide and representative selection of European and African art, with my own favourite being the Expressionist section. There is a Picasso print and a Kathe Kollwitz there. Many treasures, and a distinct sense of humour. On one staircase a huge portrait of Queen Victoria in her full regalia is juxtaposed with one of King Goodwill Zwelithini in his full regalia. Well, well, well worth visiting. But almost always empty of visitors.

If you find yourself visiting Pietermaritzburg you cannot afford not to visit this gem of a cultural hub. The gallery has a cross-cultural permanent collection with regular ad-hoc exhibitions relevant its mission of providing a bridge between the colonial past and the new democratic dispensation and its idealistic future. Grounded in the KZN ethos but speaking to an international set of artistic ideas this museum with surprise you with the depth and variety of its offerings. The museum shop is well-stocked with unique items of interest and the restaurant offers suitable well priced fare.

If you look carefully you will still see the beauty and class of Pietermaritzburg but it is quickly being overrun by inner-city ills. One of the oases of culture is the Tatham Art Gallery opposite the beautiful old town hall in the CBD. Friendly and welcoming staff will usher you into a ground-floor collection of mainly high school art of really exceptional quality, followed by the upstairs gallery that exhibits a range from Pierneef to Picasso and Matisse (although they are lesser works), and a whole lot besides. There is a lovely ceramics room, and paintings from the heavy Dutch style to a delightful impressionist or two (disclaimer: I have zero art expertise). My disability aside, I really enjoyed the hour spent among the works of dedicated artists. There is a cafe upstairs that looked quite appealing, but we were leaving town and so did not stay. Entrance to the gallery is free, as is parking outside. I recommend the Tatham highly for anyone who is either an art enthusiast or who just wants a refreshing diversion.

Finding art galleries in Pietermaritzburg can be quite challenging, especially in town. Tatham Art Gallery is in my opinion an attribute to the city. The building used to be the Old Supreme Court building and is full of history.
As an art teacher from the UK, I was surprised at the variety of works on show and the range of genres that the gallery homes.
It also must have been luck that I visited during an exhibition that featured the work of several high schools and colleges Matric students.
The café, which is located upstairs is definitely one of the best places in the town that I have found to have lunch. It's a quaint, quiet place to escape the town and gather your thoughts.
If you're in Pietermaritzburg you must visit the Tatham! It's free and suits a wide audience.

The Tatham Art Gallery is a truly special gem in the heart of Pietermaritzburg. I usually go for concerts which are done or organised by Christopher Dugan... world renowned pianist. The setting is incredible. The art works laid out in this period building are spectacular. The quaint little coffee shop is also great to visit when there. All in all a truly artful experience 😊😊😊

The whole city centre is very run down, so the old Supreme Court building in which the gallery is contained suffers accordingly. The gallery has an interesting collection of contemporary African works, though many of the rooms were closed without explanation. It includes a pleasant little cafe, probably the nicest place to have lunch in the city centre. Entry is free.
