The museum is in a very nice building, which was formerly a silo. They renovated the whole building, part of it is a hotel, part a museum. Also the exhibitions are really nice, all African modern art, some of the exhibitions were really great. Highly recommended.

Two of us visited here on Saturday November 16th 2024. The Ticket Desk told us to take the lift to the top floor and work our way down. There was nothing going on up on the roof-space.
We found the Bernie Searle, "Other Side of Now" and much of the permanent collection quite absorbing. The curation and management of the space was - overall - quite good.
However we found the attitude of the staff at the (also interesting) "one must be seated" exhibit to be intrusive and over the top.
At one point - because the whole exhibit had very low lighting, I used the torch on my iPhone (at a very low intensity - maybe 25%) to try to read one of the small, grey description-plates near the entry to one of the rooms and - to my astonishment - one of the attendants descended on us exclaiming "no flash" repeatedly.
I patiently tried to explain that we were not trying to use-flash or photograph anything, not even pointing the phone at an exhibition item - but merely using it to try to read a couple of paragraphs from a panel that was in almost total darkness - but she chose not to even listen - still repeating "no flash" more assertively than was helpful to anyone - so to try to avoid a "scene" we left the panel unread and carried on.
The experience was repeated in the next room of the same exhibition - again, the second attendant exclaiming "no flash" - and when I made it clear to her we were using the torch merely to try to read the info panel - she changed her refrain to "no light". This time, I tried to get an explanation from her as to why a low-light, not even directed at an exhibit but at the info-panel (otherwise illegible because of the low light) she just said "take it up with front-of-house". I'm not sure what this says about the staff relations in the gallery - but I came to my own conclusions.
We would normally have taken a look around the Shop area before exiting - but we didn't feel like interacting any further with the staff, or indeed seeking out "front of house" at this point, as it was nearing closing-time
During our stay in Cape Town and the Cape Area, we were otherwise delighted by the warmth and friendliness of everyone we met; this was an unfortunate exception.

I,m not an art fan as such but I was coaxed here by my better half, I found the whole experience quite enlightening. The African art here is incredible.. From paintings to installations, each told a story. Very enjoyable. Then take yourself to the rooftop bar in the Silo ( reservations required ) and enjoy magnificent views of the harbour and the like . A perfect morning all round . Enjoy !

The building was the only palatable experience. The art itself (when you could find it as it was so poorly lit as to verge on the dangerous) was nothing to write home about. There is an abundance of fantastic African Art- fire the curator. Also, make it reasonably priced so regular people can copy my experience and be pissed off.

The gallery is almost empty. Walk down the street of the village of Franschhoek or Stellenbosch and you will see workshops and more art than in the empty rooms of this gallery. I do not recommend it.

If you are in Cape Town you absolutely must go and see this very interesting museum!🔥💥 Even if you are with kids! In fact, kids will probably like it more than adults.🚀👍🏻 The works and installations are precisely "contemporary", with a large presence of videos and sounds and very current representations and materials.🤩 Furthermore, the building is truly beautiful and interesting so if you want to see an unexpected Africa, this is necessarily the right stop!!❤️🔥❤️🔥

It’s a clever concept; an art gallery across a number of different floors.
Not really a modern art fan at all, but even I found stuff to capture my interest and keep me interested for a couple of hours.

Very difficult to call this an art museum. Maybe a better description is a negative art museum. Everything that is good about african art is displayed in the reverse. Beautiful saturated colors -- no, only drab crap. Sculpture is absent. Humor is completely absent. Cubism? You've got to be joking. That would be too good. Any african art gallery puts this to shame.

The building is beautiful, I would visit the MOCAA for this alone. We found the exhibition so and so, some pieces touched us, others did not.

I've read a few reviews before going to the Zeitz Mocaa. The architecture is really beautiful. That is unfortunately the best the museum has to offer. The art was really lacking. This can't be the best contemporary art that Africa has to offer... Its definitely not worth the money. Take photo's of the outside and spend your money on something else.
