I booked a Bo-Kaap walking tour through Airbnb experiences. It’s a reasonable price and the walk is about 90 Min. The area is very pretty, the colourful houses well worth a visit. The history is interesting too. My only gripe was with Rafiq, our tour guide. He was very political and one sided messages were strongly a part of the tour. I am South African so I know some of the history and current politics so I can take his narration and place it within context. The tourists from the UK and Canada could not, and they leave with a one sided message. Not cool.
I recommend visiting the area, but with a different guide who hopefully has a better narrative.

Visited this neighbourhood of colourful houses on Dec-30, 2024.
This is a good Insta photo op. Previously it was known as the Malay quarters.
There are souvenir or curio shops (like bo-kaap bazaar) also here.

Colourful houses are nice but the walk back to the hotel (De Vaterkant) was awful. It was 6 pm and not dark yet and we thought it was still ok to take a short walk. But unfortunately it wasn’t. First there were two boys who surrounded us on Rose Street and asked for money. Luckily, Police drove by and the boys dissapeared. We then turned to a busier road with lots of traffic but got another aggressive beggar following us and harassing also our teenagers who got scared. Followed us for a while and coming real close. Very unpleasant experience, I had read many positive rewievs of Bo-kaap but never ever going there again.

For me one of the most charming neighborhoods in Cape Town. Many houses are painted in strong colors so the streets look very colorful. So,e shops, cafes around. Highly recommended to visit.

Our Hotel is located less than 500 meters from the Bo Kaap district, a
beautiful neighborhood rich in tradition located in the city bowl, at the foot of
Signal Hill, most likely the most photographed and the most colorful, thanks to the
bright colors of small low houses with flat roofs that belong to

Its origins as a Cape Malay (Malay) district date back to 1700, when they were
built houses for slaves and during the period of apartheid was
declared an exclusively Muslim area.
One neighborhood, the Bo Kaap - which in Afrikans (the language of the locals) means ”Above
The Cape” (Above the Cape, the affectionate nickname that the inhabitants give to the City)
- which still retains the charm of the past.
In my opinion it is one of the most picturesque places in the city, surrounded by
pebbles, where you can breathe one of the many cultural melting pots, that the mother city
represents, a place rich in history and culture.

Well worth stopping in this little neighbourhood to look at the colourful, quirky and unique houses. There is no cost to wander but it a must do if you are in Cape Town.

We (family of 4 with young kids) visited Bo Kaap - having lunch then went for a walk to the colourful houses then back to V&A Waterfront. It is worthwhile seeing the colourful houses, especially along Wale Street where the shop and craft markets are which is more touristy and safer as they have officials on patrol to keep people safe.
Walking back from the main tourist area to V&A waterfront (away from the security personnel), it definitely becomes more challenging. We were approached 4 times by rough looking people for money. It all ended well but in hindsight it would be better to take an uber there, then an uber back to avoid any potential issues.

I stayed at the Rouge on Rose Hotel on Rose Street and had no problems walking to Brie Street and Long Street where most of the bars and restaurants are. There are security staff on nearly all the street corners which is reassuring. The main problem I had was crossing the busy duel carriageway. Enjoy your stay it’s a beautiful city.

Would suggest that a take a slow drive through the neighbourhood first. Then you park at Wale Street and take some pics nearby of the picturesque homes.

I agree, the area is pretty safe during daytime, so you can walk around on your own. But it is nice to get the full impact of the neighbourhood by joining a walking tour and get to know the history behind the coloured houses. There are a few. Google free walking tours Bo-kaap and you will find them. Enjoy!

Not sure when you are traveling. We stayed in CT last month on holidays.
Bo Kaap is a beautiful and there are many styles of accommodation options in the area.
Whether you stay in Bo Kaap or another part of central CT depends on how many tours you wish to experience. If you are only completing the walking tour, stay else where.
We found a fantastic two bedroom unit in the Cartwright building in the very centre of CT on booking. Modern, very safe and well priced.
