We hiked to the lava flows on March 22 and it was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii which included competing in the Lavaman Triathlon! Three of my children and I participated in the tour led my Matthew and we LOVED seeing the lava! My 13 year old son gave it a 354 out of 10! This experience is all the more special with Kilauea's current eruptions! It was a challenging hike -- about 5 1/2 hours total over dried lava but a once in a lifetime journey and well worth the effort. Our guide was knowledgeable and fun! Highly recommended! Must be in good shape to do the hike!

Hiking the Pali with Active Lava Hawaiian Tours is epic and a must do!. This hike was not to difficult for us and the views were amazing. Once we reach the top our guide was equipped with GPS and able to find the area the lava was flowing. This experience exceeded our expectations, so thank you team Active Lava Hawaiian Tours...

I can't say enough about Michelle for setting up our lava hike at the last minute after another tour group cancelled on us. She was prompt, efficient and went out of her way to make our tour come together! Matt, our tour guide, was great and showed us a fabulous time! We've travelled all over the world, but to get this close to the lava flow was just a memory that will last forever! Highly recommend!

The picture on this is outdated. (As of Feb 2018) The lava is t flowing into the ocean anymore...be sure to do your research before booking tours.

My husband and I booked a tour with Active Lava Hawaiian tours in late January, 2018. The owner of the company, Michele, was our guide and we were extremely pleased with her knowledge, enthusiasm and professionalism.
I was very apprehensive about the tour, concerned about the safety aspect. However Michele put me at ease immediately. Our safety was her primary concern and we appreciated that. She explained how to walk on the lava field safely and she carefully picked our route into and out of the field. At times, she left us in place while she scouted out better viewing opportunities. We would NOT have wanted to enter the field without her guidance. It can be a very dangerous place if you are not careful and don't know what you're doing.
Michele was very knowledgeable, and we were so happy she was with us to explain everything. Several times during our tour, we notice other people "hovering" close to us so they could hear her as it was obvious she was an expert. In fact, as we left the field that night, there was a stream of people following us out of the field. She truly loves this area and it shows in how she speaks of it and the way she treats it with respect.
With Michele's help and guidance, we saw some incredible sights. Many breakouts, and lava flowing under our feet in between the cracks and crevices. Michele put us within six feet of the lava, and we will never forget feeling the heat generated by its flow. We got some incredible pictures and videos! We've had friends see the crater but no one ever got as close as we did or saw and learned as much.
Simply put, Michele was the best and we highly recommend her tour! It is an amazing sight to see and if you want to get away from the normal touristy sights, this is it. We are still in awe of all that we saw and did and our family and friends are still amazed by the pictures.
Take her tour! It is something you will never forget and it's the experience of a lifetime. How many people can say they've been on an active lava field? With the help of Michele and Active Lava Hawaiian Tours, we can!

My wife and I visited in late January 2018. It was raining that day, but we were allowed to continue our tour. With the rain, we had a private tour with our tour guide. There was no lava entering the ocean, so no need for a bike ride. Michelle, the owner, took us as far down the access road as allowable. This cut off two miles of walking each way. From there Hans, our guide, took us the rest of the way across the old lava fields to the freshly flowing lava. Hans was an excellent guide. He is very knowledgeable about the history of the prior lava flows. He pointed out all the different types of lava and the different flow characteristics. He was safety conscious the entire trip. I would definitely repeat this trip in the future. Seeing the lava is an awesome experience and definitely worth the hike.

Amazing tour with Active Lava Hawaiian Tours. We were do keen to see the lava we drove from Kona (around 2.5 hours each way but a lovely scenic drive) and met with Hans our instructor. Initially taken out with the van and then a short bike ride followed by an hour hike. The van and bike rides mean less time hiking and more time viewing lava. We arrived at the active lava field with plenty of sunlight left and got some amazing photos and video up close with lava and then watched the sunset and got to see the lava at night which is an awesome experience. Hans our guide was very friendly, knowledgable and most importantly makes the tour fun. While you can go see the lava on your own, I would definitely recommend a tour; not only do you get the wealth of information but Hans was able to tell us where it was safe to walk/stand (trust me your shoes will thank you for it) and made for a quick and safe transport to and from the fields (it can be easy to get lost, particularly at night), not to mention he makes an excellent photographer. Can't wait to go back.

We were interested in the geology, the plants, the history, and we even had questions about how the rangers do their job. He was able to answer them all and put on a cooking demonstration of beef jerky. There was a bike ride and a hike across the lava rocks.
I truly appreciate the fact that this sight was once home to a thriving and beautiful community, as a teacher it was a first hand experience that I can take back to my students about natural disasters and how being can either pick themselves up and carry on or move away. It truly shows you that Pele is boss.

We certainly have exciting times in Kalapana Hawaii as the lava has been active and flowing down the Pali for 18 months. We are extremely fortunate to have such an awesome lava experiences in our backyard.

This tour is worth every penny. Hans , our guide, was knowledgeable, courteous, careful and fun. The van and bike rides save a lot of time to focus on lava viewing. Hans know the best places to go to see lava up close, and teaches you many interesting facts about the flow. Going with a guide is highly recommended for safety and maximizing the tour time. We honestly don’t have any suggestions for improvement. Great trip!!

If I could give this experience more than five stars, I would. I was in Hawaii celebrating my 60th birthday and recovery from a total knee replacement - I did the hike with my husband and sister in-law. Hans was our guide and he could not have been more knowledgeable, helpful and kind. He made sure that we were safe at all times, had some great stories to share and was just a fun person to have take us out on what I think was an experience of a lifetime. My only regret is that we didn't pack anything to make s'mores. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Is this bike tour suitable for someone who is overweight? I'm pretty heavy but I do hike a couple times a week and do water aerobics. Thanks!

I want to say yes but it really depends on that individuals ability to overcome physical challenges. I've personally witnessed individuals come back feeling so empowered by what they just accomplished physically.
