We loved this! Matt is a Geologist and a great guide! We wanted to hike the Mayan Face and most guides were at sunrise from San Pedro or San Juan and we came across this! Not just a hike but a super cool geology lesson too! Communication was great- WhatsApp. We took the first public boat from Panajachel to San Marcos, had some breakfast at a cafe (free WiFi) and then he messaged us and met us up the street, drove us to the hike. We had a great hike and then a geology lesson and hike down and dropped us off where we wanted to go- in San Juan. Totally recommend!!

Matt’s tour up Mayan face (Indian nose) successfully combined education with enjoyment. The information he shared about geology & volcanoes as well as knowledge of the local people & culture added so much to our visit to Lake Atitlan. I’d highly recommend this tour.
We also used his transfer service to the airport, which was by far the safest journey of our holiday!

Matt was an incredible guide for our hike up to Maya Head. He had a depth of knowledge about the area that was top notch and his connections with the community made for friendly and engaging interactions. His ability to navigate the politics of land ownership was essential and above all, his knowledge of the geology of the area (and geology in general) was amazing - we learned so much about volcanos and the formation of the lake atitlan caldera specifically. Matt is also a great resource for many travel related matters including his ability to help get you from one place to another. Overall, just a fabulous experience that we couldn’t recommend highly enough. Thanks Matt!

Great experience with Matt for an Indian Nose hike, from easy booking over WhatsApp to sharing interesting background on the region during the drive to, of course, the great geology content at the top. I especially appreciated Matt's thoughtfulness -- I had told him that I was a slow hiker and he set a very gentle pace so I never felt "behind" or like I was causing the group to have to wait.

We did two tours / trips with Matt. Communication before and during was great. He is a passionate tour guide, scientist and all around great guy. His insights regarding the science of the amazing geology of this part of Guatemala and really the world, is infectious and very well organized. Having a well spoken, genuinely excited guide and teacher was really outstanding. If you find yourself in this part of Guatemala, thinking about getting a tour of Indian Nose or Pacaya, or anything else geology-wise, there is no reason to look any further. Enjoy yourselves, get a great work-out and do some Science! 10/10. Thanks Matt.

Excellent service with pickup and drive for the short hike to Indian Nose. Matt was an incredible guide who didn't just take you there, but taught you about the place you came to see. His obvious passion for geology made learning about Atitlan all the more engaging and interesting. And to top it off, his very good dog, Spike, joined us for the hike. His Indian Nose tour will be well worth your time.

We had an amazing experience with Matt on the Indian’s Nose short hike. Pro tip - if you go after sunrise, it’s less packed and super tranquil. Matt’s geology lesson about the area was also quite good. I’ve found myself sharing the geology facts with my friends back home and whoever will listen! Would highly recommend.

I would absolutely recommend this tour. The lesson is quite high level; teenagers and adults will find it particularly engaging, but my nine-year-old also learned a huge amount due to Matt’s obvious passion and expertise. If you just want the pretty views, you can find cheaper tours, but if you want to understand the landscape around you, and have it placed in the wider context of the development of the planet, you won’t find better than Geo Travel.

Absolutely brilliant.
The walk to the top of Indian Nose is challenging but doable. Matt then spent an hour explaining how normal volcanoes and calderas are formed. He is a brilliant speaker and kept our attention all the time. His enthusiasm is infectious.
As well as being a geologist, he makes an entertaining tour guide explaining local farming techniques and recommending the best coffee shops in San Pedro.

We LOVED this tour. When my friend said she wanted to do a geological tour I was like no way that sounds so boring. But it wasn't boring at all. Matt was enthusiastic, entertaining and hilarious. He is SO knowledgeable and makes learning about the earth fun. 10/10 would recommend hiking with Matt.

Wondering how many feet elevation one needs to walk to do the Indian Nose hike-or metres?We are not as young as when we used to hike--and see total elevation in the book, but not the start elevation.....considering DD

Hi there.
I just recently GPSed this! (accurate to a few meters/feet...) So doing the shorter version of the hike, driving to Santa Clara la Laguna and then hiking up from there, we park my car at 2115m (6940ft) hike flat and then a little bit down to 2090m (6857ft) then up to the top of the Nose at 2265m (7432ft). So a max elevation change of 175m (575ft). That elevation change is over quite a steep incline. It's a well maintained trail but over 100 steps straight up and then a switch-back path. That can be a little unnerving on the way back downhill for those who aren't regular hikers...Worth noting that I can offer an easier version of the trip. We don't go the "nose" part of the face but hike instead to the "neck" and then potentially up to the "chin". That's a much easier hike with no where near as much elevation gain and various lookout points where we can assess how much further you want to go. It's still a lovely view and we do still talk a lot of geology!
