The lady volunteering in the refuge office is very informative. Enjoyed the auto tour where there is a place to stop, park and walk the trails to see lots of geese and other waterfowl.
Bring your binoculars and view all different species of wildlife!

First of all, if you want to see Cibola at its best, go in the winter months. We went in December and saw tons of various birds. Our favorites were the burrowing owls. We got lucky and caught one of the little guys out in the afternoon. If you love wildlife, visit this place!

Clean, good roads, wildlife in summer with patience. Other lovely desert sites nearby. Owl were not out, but their sites are well marked.

The visitor centre is quite easy to get to (a long drive from either Yuma or Blythe though) and there is a viewing platform and a desert trail there. Not much happening in June - better to go over the winter months when there are lots of birds. The drive-loop is interesting, basically a loop around some farm fields but actually we saw road runners, a coyote and the fabulous burrowing owls - brilliant!

Unfortunately I think I was here a little too late in the year and missed the migrating birds. There is a driving tour you can take around the refuge which goes past a pond. When I was there there was one Canada Goose and various ducks and stilt type birds. I can only imagine how it must be filled with birds at the right time of year and time of day.

We arrived on March 5th and found out that there were only a few Sandhill Cranes and geese left, the rest had already left for the season. I was so sad but was determined to see what else I could find. We ended up spending 8 days exploring the refuge. On the auto tour we saw Burrowing and Great Horned Owls, Yellow headed blackbirds, sandhill cranes, coyote, Kestrel and other types of hawks and many more beautiful birds, too many to list. In the Perri marsh area we saw many ducks like the Hooded Merganser, dozens of White faced Ibis, many mule deer, coyote and burros. We loved the refuge and will return! The lady in the office was super helpful - I would take photos of the birds I saw and she would help me identify them. If you love wildlife you love the Refuge.

Near Palo Verde, California there is an entrance to Cibola National Wildlife Refuge for camping. Have the location saved because WiFi seems to be nonexistent in that area.

A sunny & cool day in January was perfect to visit the refuge. First we went to the visitor center to learn more about Cibola, hikes and drives. We were greeted by a volunteer who had much knowledge of this area. First we took the Goose Loop Auto Tour. We were able to take photos from our car by a pond that had many birds that call this their home in the winter. The hours are 1/2 hour before sunrise & 1/2 hours after sunset. You must stay in your car, except for the Corn Field Nature Trail on this loop. Winter viewing of geese, cranes, and ducks is very good. The Corn field Nature Trail is a level 1 mile walk through a restored riparian forest. There are benches to sit if you need to rest and listen to the wildlife. You will find a photo blind that you will be able to watch the wildlife and take pictures if you wish. There are bob cats in this area. We saw evidence of them being there. After this tour, we took different roads, some gravel along the Colorado River. We saw a group for burro's - mares & their babies. We also saw a Bald Eagle in a big tree and a Golden Eagle soaring just above. It was wonderful. There are also 300 kinds of birds here, and if you are lucky you may see some wild horses. It is well worth the time to drive here. We really loved it and cannot wait to return again.

Wildlife in a wild locale. A bit out of the way but the location is a treat. Birders paradise and if you enjoy quiet it is a fascinating place. The winter is a good time to visit as it will be cooler than the overpowering summers.

My wife and I traveled here in March and were impressed by what we found. This NWR is located in western Arizona along the Colorado River near the town of Cibola, AZ. It was established as mitigation for the straightening, channelization, and armoring of the banks of the Colorado River by the Bureau of Reclamation to prevent flooding. We enjoyed the auto tour, observation deck, the nice visitor/interpretation center and we were able to walk some of the hiking trails. The refuge offers other things to do like hunting, fishing and many photographic opportunities. Bring your family (including children), water, binoculars, camera and enjoy what this part of western Arizona has to offer.

Is Mid March still good to see migrating waterfowl?
撰写日期:2020年1月7日
Waiting until mid March will disappoint you. Some of the waterfowl will start leaving in February. The sooner you get there, the better.

My biggest question is why this Refuge is located in Yuma, AZ which is a long way away. It is in Cibola, AZ near Blythe not Yuma! Someone has this all wrong.
撰写日期:2018年1月3日
I tried with no success to have the address corrected with Trip Advisor. I don't remember their reasoning but I also gave them Cibola, AZ as the address that the National Wildlife Refuge System lists as the physical location. Yuma is at least 75 miles away from the Cibola NWR. I sure hope that you enjoyed your visit to this very arid spot along the Colorado River.

How do we get to this Refuge from Lake Havasu City, AZ. Are there hotels nearby?
撰写日期:2016年1月6日
Go south to I-10 head west into CA the a little beyond Blythe, look for large signs which direct you South back to Cibola AZ and the refuge. Lots of reasonable hotels and restaurants in Blythe. Great place to visit in the winter to see all the wildlife especially Sandhill Cranes.
