What we liked about our visit was the knowledge and presentation of the history of the workhouse by Kevin Gartlan Although it was very sad and at times upsetting it is something I’m glad we did. We need to keep history like this fresh in our minds and don’t let history repeat itself

Nice house for a workhouse.

Happened across this place during a ramble in the town. It is a really good place to spend a few hours and is filled with amazing artifacts from the workhouse/famine area. We had a tour of the building, guided by a very knowledgeable lady, who was both witty and entertaining. The subject matter was grim but she made it interesting and amusing at the same time. It could do with a little more expenditure to upgrade the original building behind the new portion but I’m sure that would happen if money was not so scarce. I would sum it up as an interesting, rewarding but poignant look at our history and the lessons we can learn from it.

Nice Country Town

Strange to see an entire town listed on TripAdvisor. Hard to review the ehole town to be fair.
I was here visiting friends and found it to be a very pleasant, provincial town with an elegant church and a wide diamond.
There are a good few nice looking pubs but all were closed on our visit due to Covid restrictions. We saw plenty of eateries too but as we were visiting friends we ate in so cant fa for them into this review.
No matter, we werent here for the beer or the food. Enjoyed a nice stroll and the locals were really friendly. Plenty of parking, the place is well kept...struggling to know what else to say really.
As I said, not sure how to review a town? Can't give more than 3 stars but its certainly not worth any less.

Very pretty small town with history of lace making

The town is very attractive with Georgian buildings, and an interesting history. We stopped to visit the Lace Gallery and met a lace maker who showed us how lace was made. The gift shop had many beautiful pieces of old and new lace on display with the ability to purchase lace related gifts. There was a nearby tea shop and across a hallway from the Lace Gallery was another shop that sold items made by local artists - woven items, etc. This town is well worth a stop if you are anywhere in the area; we stopped on the way from Dublin to Northern Ireland.

Amazing town!

Carrickmacross is a great town and is very bustling compared to other towns in the nearby counties. It has a great range of hotels and restaurants. The lake ad forests of Carrickmacross are pleasing to the eyes.

Wonderful town with wonderful people

We visited the lace gift shop as well as the restored workhouse from the Famine (schedule a tour in advance). Everyone we spoke with was warm and welcoming. It was an easy bus trip from Dublin, but felt like we were miles away in a charming village. Highly recommend a visit, and don't forget to bring home a beautiful lacework.

Lovely town and history

We stayed at the Shirley Arms Hotel and enjoyed a 3 day visit. On Saturday there is a lovel, free walking tour that starts at the hotel. St. Joseph's church is a beautiful church with beautiful stained glass windows by Harry Clark. The Carrickmacross Lace Gallery has a wonderful display of antique lace pieces. There is also lace items you can purchase. The Carrickmacross Workhouse is so full of heartbreaking history. Mary gives an informative tour of the workhouse. It is only open Monday through Friday.

Carrickmacross is great town location is in Co Monaghan. Its from its town to the people are amazing plenty of place lsbti enjoy a family meal and few drinks om all local pubs. Festival here is big hit on every June Bank Holiday also has a wee lake for fishing and another though a forest with wonder views and the neumore Hotel just located across the way. Plenty of choice of places to see and do for all the family

Clones Lace Summer school

We had an an absolutely fascinating tour with the wonderfully friendly Mary. Her knowledge was fantastic and delivered with a fantastic historical knowledge. I would love to see the rest of this building restored and possibly used by artists.
Thank you for a truly brilliant tour.
