Great day or days out on this surfaced greenway. Started from Longford (took train from Dublin the night before) and cycled back to Kilcock (c.120km 0830-1600hrs). Magic to be off road but on hard surfaces, beats Waterford for peace and quiet, if you want to get away from it all this is the Greenway for you. Only got busy after Enfield. Top tip; try Ballynacarrigy for coffee, Mullingar is too busy ( I didn't and regretted it).

We were four cyclists who were travelling from Galway to Dublin. We decided to travel the final section from Moy valley to Dublin along the Royal canal as we had read that this is now open to cyclists. There were many sections that were hazardous requiring us to leave the track and navigate our way round, without local knowledge we found this difficult as we did not know where the trail is safe to cycle. Many miles were cycled on the main roads. It should be made clear that that the Royal canal is not fully open to cyclists. An expected 3 hour ride turned into a long and frustrating 5 hours. Not a great cycling experience.

Walked a lot of the Westmeath part of the Royal Canal Greenway taking in the town of Mullingar, and a few pubs along the way too.
Was pleasant walking into Mullingar as I was early and not a soul was up...…apart from the odd bird here and there, grand and lovely.
Walking out of the down wasn't as good, as the Greenway hugs the main road to Dublin and the noise of the near constant traffic was very annoying...….
Having a pint in Nancy Quinn's was a highlight , good food in a great setting.
The walk overall was ok. I wouldn't say it was an amazing walk but worth doing once I guess.

Very dissapointed after all the talk and hype of the royal canal greenway from Maynooth to Enfield.
Myself and my sister walked this stretch and couldnt believe how boring it was,
Apart from Kilcock after 6km there was absolutely NOTHING along the canal walk, the birds were singing and they were beautiful there were no
Toilets
Seats
Coffee stops
Boats
Barges
When we got to Enfield we went into the Bridge pub the food was lovely and so were the staff.
We couldnt get accomadation near by so we had taxi to the only hotel we could get .
Never again will I do the royal canal walk it put us off doing more of it over the weekend.😪

The Royal Canal is a great in Dublin Mullingar and Ballymahon. Popular with walkers and hikers alike. Great history and chance to see the transport network pre the motorised transport. Goods and people travelled on the barges.

This is a great way to explore the banks of the Grand Canal. One of the two great canals built over 200 years ago connecting Dublin to the Shannon. Lovely peaceful way to enjoy a weekend exploring the canal bank and also to do some fishing

Walk the canal all the time, lovely and peaceful and great scenery and lots of wildlife around especially early in the mornings

As other reviewers have said, the Royal Canal Way is 146km long and is best done in stages unless you are a very experienced and competent cyclinst.
I look forward to doing just that over nany visits having made my debut on this beautiful route today.
Actually I didn't cycle at all, I walked the 5km between Longwood and the Hill of Down snd back. Just a besutiful peaceful walk surrounded by birdsong and the splendour of nature.
Lovely views at times of the rolling countryside alongside the canal, some gorgeous bridges and harbours.
The path is flat and has a crushed gravel surface that is perfect dor both walking and cycling.
Carful, as you often cross public roads so watch for traffic.
Entry of car parks at intervals along the canal that allow you to pick many, many starting points.

Recently cycled Athlone to Dublin via the Old Railway Track and the Royal Canal. Athlone to Mullingar is a broad tarmac path, flat, easy riding but quite uninteresting. Mullingar to Maynooth is a good path and very pretty to ride. Maynooth to Dublin is very mixed terrain, with little tarmac surface. It's mainly gravel, forest paths and many miles of grasstrack with rough, narrow 'troughs' to ride along. Difficult riding on a road bike, and I wouldn't choose to ride it again. Thankfully it was a dry day when we rode it.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our day on the Royal Canal Way . Hired bikes at Mullingqr Harbour Hub , of Mullingar Bike Hire and cycled as far as Ballynacarrigy. Would highly recommend , quiet flat route , that even cyclists who hadn't cycled in years managed easily. Great day out , recommend a stop at Lock 26 at Coolnahay , Great coffee and picnic area 😀

We are planning to walk from Mullingar to canal end in Longford. We are planning about 15-20 km which will take 3 days. We will require B&B 2 nights. Can anyone recommend where we could find accommodation. Preferably as close to the canal as possible.
