Despite its small size, the city of Chaves has a non-negligible number of monuments: among these, the Castle of which, following the vicissitudes that have taken place over the centuries, only a mighty crenellated tower flanked by an Italian garden (beautiful with spring blooms, but to tell the truth perhaps a little affected) with a belvedere. The site remains among the most iconic in the city and it is not unusual for it to be used for photo shoots (including weddings).
The castle houses a tiny military museum with memorabilia linked to the Portuguese army and the defense of this border area: it develops in the tower, with rooms overlapping one another and accessible only via (steep) stairs. The last staircase allows access to the top of the tower, from which you can see a beautiful panorama. The price is absolutely symbolic (1 euro), however proportional to the smallness of the museum collection. Given the presence of stairs (both for access to the tower and inside) the visit is not suitable for those who do not have optimal mobility.

Steep climb to get to the top and a wonderful 360 degrees view over Chaves. In the middle floors you can see some military objects, which are also interesting

The Keep is worth it.
The employee's service is absolutely reprehensible. He made xenophobic comments in relation to the Brazilian community, more specifically the "style of Brazilian women". She called the people of the villages bordering Chaves as a "bunch of idiots" who shamed the people of the city of Chaves, "the true flavienses" like herself.
We tried to argue as much as possible, without much consideration on her part.
As this is a tourist site, it seems inconceivable that they would keep this employee on site.
We were there on April 2nd at 5:40 pm.

Small Castle, of which the keep is well preserved, which I was unable to visit as it was closed.
Surrounded by an impressive garden, where there are imposing medieval cannons.
The entire set is very well preserved.

The experience was horrible. Despite the relics and the historical immensity contained in the tower, the competence (or lack thereof) of the employee combined with the lack of hygiene in the place (dust visible in all the windows, stairs full of accumulated dirt) is certainly not advisable for an asthmatic. They made me feel that Chaves deserves much more…

Desde el puente subiendo la calle principal te encuentras con el castillo de Chaves. La verdad es que es un sitio pequeñito coqueto y fácil de recorrer que poco tiempo lo has hecho y has disfrutado un poco de las vistas del pueblo y del entorno.

I am planning on coming to Chaves and will visit the Castelo de Chaves while I am there.
I would be interested to know if there is any date set this year for the Motorcycle Rally (Reunião de motociclo) in July.
