Interesting ride, not much at the base of the ride as there was construction; really short. Cool from historical perspective but not much else.

I took the funiculaire going from "Basse-Ville" to place George Python, not only as a mean of transportation (it is part of the regular Fribourg public transport system), but also because I was rather curious of the experience. Ultimately, it was very nice to ride it, particularly because it still almost the same since its construction in 1899!

Magnificent and enjoyable; Running since 125 years with no electricity; just water and gravity. A must see in Switzerland

The cable-car that connects Fribourg's Basse-Ville with the old town centre higher up is lovingly called by the locals 'Funi' and they use it in their everyday life. Tourists love it for the special way it functions.
At the end of the 19th century several water-ballasted funiculars were built, a first one by Niagara, but soon closed after an accident. The oldest in Europe (and still functioning) is the 'Elevador do Bom Jesus' in Braga, Portugal, built in 1882 by a Swiss engineer. There exist still four water-ballasted funiculars from the end of the 19th century in the United Kingdom and one in Germany (Nerobergbahn at Wiesbaden).
In Switzerland twelve former such funiculars have been converted to electric operation, especially also the oldest at the Giessbachfälle, and only the one at Fribourg using this old method has been left functioning. Special here is that waste water gets used to fill up the car on top, which then becomes so heavy that it automatically pulls up the empty car below, that had just gotten rid of its waste water there.
When travelling the cars meet half way on the track at a passing loop, onto which they get led by a passive switch, a so-called 'Abt'sche Weiche', after the Swiss engineer Abt. Travelling time is 2 minutes and the cars usually leave every 6 minutes. When there the ticket machine had broken down, so the conductor told us to get on anyway. There is not much seating available inside the cars.

This was a really interesting sight. It was pretty smelly since it runs on wastewater but was a fun, novel thing to do. The funicular requires that you buy a ticket, but the ticket machine doesn’t take credit cards so you need coins. The ride takes about 3 minutes to get from the bottom to the top of the hill. The bottom part of the car is closed and the top part is open to the air.

Does the Swiss railroad pass cover the cost of the ticket to the Funiculaire Fribourg ride
