I understand why Ruskin loved the view as it is a stunning location. Path was closed and as raining steps down very slippy. We therefore viewed from the church yard which not ideal but you still see the majority of the view

The path was closed due to work being carried out , however you can still get a good feel for it , fantastic place beautiful church, you can walk along the river, we had a swim, love this place

This view is well worth a visit, less than a mile from the town with a fabulous walk to Devils Bridge

‘I do not know in all my country, still less in France or Italy, a place more naturally divine.’ wrote John Ruskin in 1875. I am not sure what he was taking at the time. The view is undoubtedly a good one but there are others in the UK, France and Italy that might compete for the title! Still it’s a very nice and straightforward walk from the car park by the Devil’s Bridge and well worth the effort of climbing the Radical Steps en route. Best walk in the area, also with nice views, has to be the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail, just off the village of Ingleton which is about 6 miles from Kirkby and well worth a visit.

Gorgeous view.. makes you feel grounded.. lovely walk to it through a beautiful church yard with a stunning church.

Pleasant day, delightful walk, fabulous view. Not surprising that it is such a tourist attraction. Combine this with the walk to devils bridge.

Accessed via the churchyard or from below, climbing up the Radical steps (86 of them) Amazing views. Calm and peaceful. No need to say anymore

This is slightly outside Kirkby Lonsdale but is easy enough to walk to. The views overlooking the river are excellent and its well worth the effort.

We came across this by accident. We had arrived at Kirby Lonsdale to get some lunch but got side tracked as we wandered around and through the church yard. Just further on that St Mary’s church we happened upon the view, we had both began to admire the view before we read the plaque stating the description by Ruskin.
There is no doubt it is a stunning view of Lancashire, England within the world. Hardly enhancing the view now is a multi coloured barn door or wall that I’m sure wasn’t around when Turner painted it to bring our Ruskin’s comment.
Nontheless a breath taking sight well worth making a special trip.

I’ve seen plenty of dogs off the lead along the river but best to have the lead on going up the steps
