Thetford’s past is celebrated in a charming provincial museum ‘The Ancient House’ where we discovered friendly staff and a well-informed retired artist in residence. Here we learnt about the town’s revolutionary hero Thomas Paine, author of ‘The Rights of Man’ and a similarly intriguing story of the exiled Maharaja Duleep Singh as well as several other minor and major features of the town’s impressive history. The museum is well worth a visit and has a small shop selling gifts and books mostly associated with Thetford and the museum collections. Parking nearby is easy, the entrance fee modest, and there are a number of cafes not far away.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Attention was drawn to the ceiling in the oldest part of the house (exceptional carvings decorate the beams). There are 4 short videos to watch and at time of my visit part of the Thetford romantic horde was on display.
There are some exhibits and activities for children.
Recommend duration 1-2 hours.
P.S. Gift shop has bookmarks.

Small house with exhibits. Was expecting a little more on the Duleep Singh not only a short film.
Have visited Thetford a number of times and the Museum has been closed. This is the first time I have been able to visit (bank holiday).

A lovely little local museum with great exhibitions. The museum is in an old house (the front door opens automatically) and there are exhibits over two floors. Start with the introductory films which talk about the house itself, Duleep Singh, Thomas Paine and Thetford. Then there is a mix of permanent and temporary exhibitions. The temporary exhibition is currently the Thetford Hoard which is fabulous and well presented. The Duleep Singh and family is fascinating. Liked the local history. Friendly, well-informed staff. A small shop.

There are around 8 rooms of exhibits, most of which relate to Thetford. There are four short introductory films about various local topics and one room which houses special exhibitions. Although some exhibits are in old fashioned glass cases there has been an attempt to make the displays interesting. The staff are pleasant and the house is as much an attraction as the contents. Perhaps a bit expensive, but worth a look.

An excellent museum with a fascinating history well displayed. Housed in a building dating from 1500 or possibly before it is a wonderful time capsule.

I visited on Saturday 24th August and were presented with a very interesting talk on Duleep Singh whom I was completely unaware of as far as his part in history. After which we toured through a very interesting museum going through various ‘sections’ I spent some time in the “1901 Kitchen” which I enjoyed. I also learned a little about Thomas Paine (we were eating at a restaurant named after him later that day). Again I knew very little about him and I was quite impressed with how he helped shape democracy in many parts of the world.
The area I was less than impressed with was the ‘History Highlights’ section. I have an interest ‘dark age history’ and I was aware of Thetford’s connection with Boudicca (warrior queen of the Iceni) so was keen to read what they said on the subject. When I read the museums ‘highlight’ on Boudicca I have to say I was less than impressed. When I was ready to leave the museum I thought I would pass on my feelings to the lady who had given us the very informative talk when we first arrived. I mentioned that I was disappointed that there was only a few lines which read something along the lines that ‘she won a couple of battles and then she was defeated’. I was somewhat taken aback by her reply as I wasn’t expecting it. I was told that it isn’t clear that Boudicca ever existed and that there is only two references in roman writings that mention her. OK I accept that principle, but one of comments is attributed to Tacitus who has a reasonable record on that time.
I would like to pose a question to the Ancient House museum...Where would Nottingham’s tourism be without Robin Hood or Tintagel Castle without King Arthur? Both of these legends or perhaps ‘myths’ have slightly dodgy provenances. When I visited Colchester in 2018 they weren’t so cautious about their connection to Boudicca despite the fact that she ‘allegedly’ laid the town to waste!. My point is; Norfolk should celebrate it’s hero’s it is (after all) the Iceni heartland and (to my mind) Boudicca is up there with Edith Cavell. So why not celebrate her? She ‘allegedly’ fought oppression which I would judge to be a noble cause. I (as a father of two daughters) am very aware of how many great women have been hidden from history, Ada Lovelace and Rosalind Franklin to name two and there are plenty of others. I believe great women should be celebrated and I would put Boudicca in that category. From a historical perspective she is no less dodgy than Robin Hood or King Arthur in fact I would say she has the better provenance. I seem to remember a pretty impressive statue on Victoria embankment (London) just outside the ‘mother parliament’ which celebrates her.
Would it be too much to expect Thetford to celebrate (the possibility) that, back in the mid first century, near to the town that is today called Thetford, a revolution against oppression might (may even) have been started by a woman whose children were abused by the oppressors and whose army for a short-ish time pushed back the most powerful army the world had ever seen (at that time) and whilst her army got beaten eventually, her name is still celebrated throughout England and Wales?

Bescheiden, maar authentiek oud pand. Goede informatieve videopresentaties. Meerdere belangwekkende perioden: steentijd, romeinse tijd, middeleeuwen en 19-de eeuw. Daarna wat in slaap gesukkeld....
