The keep of Middleham castle was probably erected by Robert fitz Ranulph in the 1170s. The curtain wall was built around 1300 by the Neville family who had acquired the stronghold via marriage in 1260.
Between 1397 and 1410 Ralph Neville turned Middleham castle into a palace in accordance with his status of richest and most powerful lord in the north of England : The curtain wall was raised in order to create first floor lodgings. The towers were heightened. The north east tower was converted into a gatehouse. Additional latrine (tower)s were constructed.
His son Richard (of Salisbury) had the roof of the keep raised and added a third floor to the gatehouse and the north west tower.
Middleham castle never served as a residence again after the death of Richard III in 1485 and gradually fell into ruin.

A visit to Middleham castle starts at the little museum where you can admire the fabulous Middleham jewel (found nearby in 1985) and obtain information about the former inhabitants of the fortress. Next up you can wander the ruins with the help of an excellent guidebook.
I had very high expectations of Middleham castle because of its links with the Wars of the Roses : It was home to key players of this conflict like Richard of Salisbury, Richard of Warwick (“the kingmaker” and Richard III (the last Plantagenet king). Edward IV was imprisoned here in 1469. Edward of Middleham (only son of Richard III and Anne Neville) was born here in 1474 (and died here in 1484).
Sadly, the stronghold is very battered : Nothing remains of the fortified stairs with three gates providing access to the keep. A single stone pillar of the chapel is left standing. The keep lacks floors, making it difficult to discern the details of the great chamber and inner chamber. The appartments in the courtyard are reduced to foundations and even with the guidebook their layout cannot be visualised. The upper floors and battlements of the gatehouse are inaccessible.
More could be done to revive Middleham castle : reconstruction drawings (or “artist's impressions”), animated storytelling (like the projections and comics at Conisbrough castle or the whispering benches at Clifford's tower) and the roofing and flooring of the keep, the gatehouse and the prince's tower.
In conclusion : worth a visit but I had expected more and hope English Heritage take my constructive criticism to heart.

Almost missed visiting this castle because of the lack of car parking space. There are plenty of them but they were all full except for one. The castle itself is a little gem and well worth a visit.

Second visit to this iconic castle. The history is amazing. Of course the castle is ruined like so many others but it has a majesty and a feel of times gone by. We were lucky enough to have the guidance of a lovely lady in the ticket booth who was happy to share her knowledge and help, such as where were the best photo opportunities and what was available to those who were less able. Stuff for children to engage in as well. Unfortunately, I couldn't see her name badge being poorly sighted but she was just brilliant, helpful and a lot of fun

We were in the area so we visited the castle again. Parking just at the side of the castle like last time, I don't know where else you would park if it's busy.
Value for money really not as good. Didn't spend the full day here and there's not much else apart from the ruins of the castle. A prefab is the English heritage shop. Not sure what else they can do to improve the attraction but I felt it was quite expensive for what they were offering unless you're a English heritage member

Pretty classic castle to visit, very friendly EH staff ensured a warm welcome. Nice atmosphere and a good tower climb. Definitely worth a visit.

We really enjoyed our visit here. The information going around the Castle was very well done and informative. The guide book is better than your average guide book for a ruined castle. It has a good map and historical information. The staff are knowledgeable and very approachable. There is a small gift shop which has a range of books, toys, food and drink. Just be a ware that there are no toilet facilities at the castle, but there are public toilets not far from the castle - have some 20p pieces ready.

Lovely castle with some great views situated right in the centre of the lovely town of Middleham. Entry is pricey especially if you're a family of four, but I'd still recommend visiting it

A really nice, very big castle! Staff very friendly and helpful in the shop. Nice atmosphere here, and educational material for children.

We really enjoyed exploring these ruins. There is so much history here, including quite a bit related to Richard III. The lady running the gift shop (I wish I had gotten her name!) was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, and was able to recommend some books for me as well. Well worth a visit and we will be back!

Had a great time, Middleham itself is a lovely place, have visited the castle twice now, if your a fan of Richard lll it's a must

Do they sell the Middle ham castle guidebook, which has a red spine, at the castle itself?

Middleham Castle is open each weekend (10 am to 4 pm) until the end of march 2017.
After which it is open seven days a week (10am to 6pm) until early October.
Early October to early November it is open from 10 am to 5 pm.
Then back to weekends only again until March 2018
