This castle is a ruin and was not one that saw battle as such.
It is essentially a home complex within fortified walls and what would have been a moat.
Before visiting the remains there is an exhibition room which explains the history of the castle, its use and of our monarchs, which was excellent.
The castle itself was reputed to be the favourite castle of Richard lll and where he grew up.

This was a nice ruined castle with interesting history associated with Richard III. There are only a few signs, so you really need the guide book to understand the various rooms and buildings. I was one of only a few people who visited, so I was able to quietly walk around at my own pace. I recommend spending 1-2 hours there.

Monday 13th June 2022, my husband and I decided to make a second visit to the Village of Middleham to go to visit Middleham Castle, under the care of The English Heritage.

We took some wonderful photos of the castle and surrounding area. Middleham castle also has an interesting history.

There are no written records for a castle at Middleham until 1216. However, remains of an early castle survive to the south of the present castle, on the site known as William’s Hill.

This castle consisted of timber buildings surrounded by a ringwork (a circular earthwork). The ringwork was protected with timber defences and surrounded by a deep ditch, which survives, partly water-filled. A bailey, or enclosure, stood beyond the ditch on its south side.

The present castle was begun in the late 12th century. The great tower or keep was built in 1170. A tower was added to the east side of the keep in the first half of the 13th century with a chapel on its top floor.

On the accession of Edward IV in 1461, his younger brother Richard was made Duke of Gloucester. In 1465, at the age of 13, Richard entered Warwick’s household at Middleham remaining there until 1468.

Following Warwick’s death in 1471, Richard acquired the Neville lands in the north, including Middleham. His position was enhanced further through his marriage to Anne Neville, Warwick’s younger daughter, and his appointment as president of the Council of the North.
Their son, Edward was born at Middleham in 1474. Richard became Protector of the Realm upon Edward IV’s death in 1483. Later that year he was crowned Richard III, usurping his 12 year old nephew, Edward V.

Richard continued to spend time at Middleham, staying there for several days in 1484 after his son Edward died at the castle.

Richard was defeated by Henry Tudor in 1485 at the Battle of Bosworth. Upon Henry’s accession to the throne Middleham became the possession of the Crown.

In 1604 James I sold Middleham castle to Sir Henry Lindley, whose family owned it until 1643.
The castle then passed by marriage to the Loftus family. In 1647, during the Civil War, Parliament ordered the destruction of the castle to prevent it being taken by Royalists, but the order was never carried out.

After the restoration of Charles II in 1660, Middleham was brought by the Wood family of Littleton in Middlesex. The castle was leased out for industrial and farming use. In 1779 during the American Wars of Independence, the Office of Commissioners asked Thomas Wood if the castle was fit to hold French prisoners of war, but no documentation shows its use as a prison.

In 1889 the Woods sold Middleham to Samuel Cunliffe Lister, later Baron Masham. By this time the British Archaeological Association had raised concerns about the castle’s condition. The lower few feet of stone of the keep’s latrine towers had been removed for buildings in the town, leaving them hanging in the air.

In 1897 the 2nd Lord Masham began to conserve the castle, commissioning the Yorkshire architect Walter Brierley to make the repairs. Date stones from 1906 with the letter ‘M’ marking this work can be seen in the latrine towers. In 1926 the Cunliffe Listers placed Middleham in the guardianship of the Office of Works (now the English Heritage), and it was gifted to the State in 1930.

My husband and I mooched round here for over three hours and whilst I was here I found inspiration and I wrote a poem about Richard III called ‘The Accursed Child’.

If you like Medieval History then this castle is well worth a visit if you are in the area

Middleham Castle which is fewer than five minutes on foot from downtown Middleham. At the castle I bought an admission (maybe for a year) and a cup of coffee for £1.50.. I spent the next two or three hours climbing the walls and walking around the castle.

There are some ladders to help tourists climb the walls, but the castle is still a ruined castle.

Middleham was no castle of care for Richard. Here he was happy with his wife Anne and their very young son Edward who had his own apartment in the castle. For ten years this family lived there in peace after Bárnet and Tewkesbury.

There are quite a few good ruins in the area (eg Bolton Castle, Jervaulx Abbey, Richmond Castle, Fountains Abbey) - but this is the best! Not so ruined as some and very atmospheric...you can imagine Richard III here (and there is a scarily realistic statue if him!)
Great views from the tower as well. Well worth a visit.

Available free parking nearby. Staff friendly and helpful. No cafe but snacks and hot/cold drinks available to buy in the castle shop.
Castle grounds well kept and castle impressive and accessible. Great panoramic views from the settlements (well worth the climb).

This wasn't a castle that was on my radar to visit, but I'm glad we discovered it. It feels quite imposing when in the grounds because the buildings are close together, unlike that of Richmond castle, which I had always wanted to visit (and did so later in the week). Great views from the top of the castle too.

There is no cafe (at the castle or in Middleham), toilets or parking on site. However, there are public toilets (20p) and a car park nearby (free), although I imagine on a busy day it might be hard to find parking. We visited through the week so it was quiet. The on-site shop does have a coffee machine so we were able to get a hot drink and there are pubs in the village.

The staff on site, Gill, was super friendly and helpful. She took time to explain things to us about the castle and local facilities. I would rate her as excellent. I have rated this as very good on the basis of lack of on-site facilities, but given there were some nearby, it didn't detract from our enjoyment.

It would have been helpful to have had more info boards about each room of the castle, but I guess that's why the guidebook is available to buy. There was a room inside the shop that gave some history, which was helpful. If you like castles, this is worth a visit.

Our first visit to this castle was literally decades ago; we have visited many times since and we still love it.

The views from the top of the tower are outstanding and it was good to see the wooden steps back in use as that makes a big difference for one of us.

We have both been fascinated by Richard III since an early age so that is also a plus.

The lady on duty in reception was very welcoming.

The small exhibition on the background of the castle ownership and the Middleham Jewel is well worth reading although the space is limited.

The only drawbacks for us are the hideous sculpture and the fact that some information panels really need renewal.

Well worth visiting this gem. No cafe or toilet ( as far as I know ). You can climb up to the viewing platform near the top & get great views of Middleham & the area.

As always we were impressed by how friendly and helpful the English Heritage staff always are. We probably would have thought the £7 entrance each to be a bit too pricey, but our entrance was included with our English Heritage Membership - which we have already got our money's worth out of 4 times over!

In March the castle is only open on weekends but from April it is open to the public every day.

Parking is in the nearby village centre, we were lucky and managed to get a space just a short 2 minute walk from the castle entrance. The only negative about visiting this castle is that there are no toilets (and also potentially the lack of parking on a busy day too I guess). Public toilets are located a short 5 minute walk away, according to the sign but we did not visit. Cost to use these is 20p.

There are only a couple of information boards but we enjoyed exploring amongst the ruins. Parts of the castle are very well preserved and you can walk up the spiral staircase to look down at the castle and out to the views, then walk back down via another wooden staircase.

There are activities/castle related toys for children to play with and a few picnic tables about the ruins. We managed to find a sheltered spot for a picnic in the sun on the outside of the castle wall, farthest from entrance. For some reason these grounds were very very windy! A fun way to spend an hour or so and to break up our journey home.
