Prof John Davies in his book "100 things in Wales to see before you die", makes the point that there are a lot of spiritual places in Wales but, for him, and for me, the Pales in the most spiritual place in Wales.
George Fox the founder of the Quaker movement preached on a common in Radnordhire" very early in his ministry. It is generally thought that the common was Penybont. Certainly Radnorshire became the hotbed of Quakerism in Wales. Quakers had no need of churches or priests, and could join together and worship anywhere, but, once they died, being considered heretics and refusing to provide financial support to the church there was need for somewhere to Bury their dead. Land, up on the hillside above Llandegley was leased to create a burial ground. Much later, in 1717, a Meeting House was built adjacent to the Burial Ground, and the Pales became the oldest Quaker Meeting House in continuous use. A school was created in the Meeting House in Victorian times and in the 1880s a cottage was built for the school master between the Meeting House and the Burial Ground. There is an area of woodland, a camping area, a reflection pool in the grounds, and a toilet and shower block was built in the 1990's.

A peaceful place in a beautiful setting, good location for reflection and contemplation. The Warden was on site, and kindly told us about the Meeting House and its history. Most attractive views, lovely scenery. Camping ground available.

Lovely little piece of history in the middle of nowhere. Well preserved meeting house. Not much to see but lovely building and great views. Worth a visit for its historical value. Had to open two farm gates to get to.

I came to meditate and was again captivated by the spirit of the place. I felt renewed. It was good to sit and the all religion Bible was intriguing. The Pales is so hospitable with hot drinks available with a honesty bowl. The toilets are immaculate. There is even a shower. The two rooms are available to hire and would make a fantastic venue for a workshop.

The Pales Meeting House is remote and a refuge of peace. It is a lovely thatched building .The meeting house is looked after by wardens who live in the house attached. On a sunny day you can sit and look out over amazing views. We sat quietly and meditated and then read from the boards attached about the Society of Friends (Quakers) and the Quakers in Wales. In the attached room, visitors can help themselves to coffee or tea and can leave a donation. There are toilets which are modern and spotless in a block near the cemetery.
If you want to sit quietly in surroundings where people have worshipped for centuries then this is worth a visit. It certainly refreshed us. There is a meeting at 3pm on the third Sunday of the month. The Pales is open all day from 8am.

I have attended this Quaker Meeting fairly regularly this year, only missing more recently because of income challenges. It has stunning views over Llandegley, and a thoughtfully planned Peace garden which includes visiting rabbits, squirrels and even occasionally, and unfortunately, sheep. Also, if you are a pilgrim looking for a remote camping spot with good facilities, The Pales has spotless bathroom facilities including a shower plus access to a lovely kitchen and a big burner to keep you warm if you wish to stay indoors. Prices are reasonable. There is a caretaker who is usually accessible, and a dog (which doesn't like other dogs) living on site. As I don't have a bathroom at home, I have permission to use the shower and leave a donation towards the electricity costs. There is a beautiful camping area in the garden with an area inwhich to enjoy an outdoor fire. The building itself is ancient with the best thatched roof I have ever seen! Powys county once had lots of Quaker meeting houses and I believe this is a very early example so you can see the very straight backed hard chairs which Quakers used to sit on during meeting, and the simple, circular seating plan which is a feature of our services. Services are usually silent, with people only speaking if inspired, to put it simply and the simplicity of the quaker lifestyle is very eviden at The Pales. Another feature of Quakerism is that we don't have a pastor, preacher or leaders, just Elders to guide us. The Pales is relatively easy to find, being well signposted off the A44 and A488. Even if you are not religious, it is well worth a visit, just to enjoy the silence and the view.

You have to drive along narrow roads, open gates and avoid sheep to get there, but it is well sign posted from the main roads. What a beautiful place it is! It is the oldest Quaker Meeting house in the UK and you get an immediate feeling of peace and spirituality. There is also a side room with much of historical interest and information. Outside, the garden is lovely, the burial ground simple and tranquil and the views of the Radnorshire countryside absolutely stunning. I almost hesitate to put this on TripAdvisor, because hordes of visitors will disturb the serenity.
