Constructed about 1800 years ago by Karikala Chozha, this is a marvel having stood the time. Made only with stones and clay, it has been an enigma to Civil engineers how this could stand for so long.
The Cauvery water comes from Mettur Dam. This is sent through a sluice to Cuddalore/chidambaram. Another sluice diverts water to Thanjavur for irrigation.
When we visited there was hardly any water. There is a small Hanuman temple below the dam. Also there is a Museum for Karikalan( called Mani Mandapam). There are also parks for children to play and go for "rides".

Kallanai built by Chola king more than thousand years back by using blue metal. It is a magnificient dam storing water to be released to rivers over few months. One must visit and enjoy this beautiful dam built by Cholas and enjoy. Best picnic spot as well.

The location is great with some wonderful views of the river. But the whole area needs some tender loving care. It’s rather run down and grubby. Fun on a Sunday to see Tamil families out for the day.

walk thought the small road built on the dam. it stretches few kms. Also take a dip in the water , swim and coll yourself.

Our friends are existing to visit kallanai.. Which is built across the kaveri river. The dam has been built with stone and idea to divert the water to across the village area. The world oldest dam. Here lot of tourist visit and fresh air. We all took bath in river and enjoy the trip. We eat fish which they prepared and serve near by the dam. Nice place to visit in our life time.

It's unbelievable that this Dam has been in tact surviving many natural and made made calamities, for more than 2000 years.And it is still functional.

This is a historical age old fame to visit. Any person who visits Trichy should spent atleast 10 minutes here to feel the pride of Cholas by appreciating their masterpiece.
