Not easy to reach this area with motorcycle but worth it! Advice: don't take the shortest trip on google maps, the road is very bad, go for the longest one instead.

Really recommend to hike or drive on a scooter to this stunning viewpoint. Morning before sunrise. Sleeping is also possible.

Nous y sommes allé lors d'une journée découverte en scooter. C'est un gros coup de coeur. La vue est magnifique et vaut largement le détour. À ne pas louper lors d'un séjour à Rantepao.

I have just returned from a trip to Tana Toraja. This is my second trip to the region.
I went to Toraja to see ma'nene death rituals. I was not disappointed by what I saw!
Rather than staying in, Rantepao, I opted to stay in Makale - which is more interesting and colourful.
To get the best from any trip to Toraja, you need a local guide - and you won't find better than Daud Rapa.
Daud guided me on both my trips to Toraja, and his service is flawless.
Unlike many guides in the region, Daud was born and raised in Toraja, and has a deep understanding of – and genuine passion for – Torajan culture.
Drawing on his vast knowledge of local history, people, rituals and the environment, Daud helped me to make sense of the often wild and confusing scenes unfolding before me, and he knew the answer to every question I asked.
Using a mixture of public and private transport – all of which Daud arranged – I got to see funeral ceremonies, all the major burial sites, and even had time to visit the local livestock market, explore remote villages, and take a punishing hike into the mountains.
Daud always prepares a full and varied programme for me in Toraja, and there wasn't a wasted moment – he even took me back to one of the major burial sites when I realised my camera was set incorrectly, and that my shots were rubbish!
Daud's English is impeccable, and he has a knack for explaining complex concepts in a clear and concise fashion.
During my time in Sulawesi Daud also introduced me to his family and friends, and gave me an opportunity to see what real life is like in Toraja. At no point did I feel like a tourist – it was more like I was visiting an old friend.
In the past few years I've been lucky enough to have travelled extensively in Asia and South America, and have used the services of many guides.
But without doubt I can say that Daud is the best, friendliest and best informed guide I've ever met.
OK, that's enough gushing! Here's the important stuff...
* Daud speaks perfect English and conversational French.
* Daud can arrange travel logistics, recommend local hotels, suggest itineraries, arrange trekking and rafting, and has the local connections to find out when funeral ceremonies are taking place (don't believe what tour companies say – the ceremonies take place all year, not just at peak season).
* Daud can offer guiding services across Sulawesi (including Bunaken Marine Park and the Togian Islands for world-class diving) and in other parts of Indonesia, including Papua and Bali.
* Find out more on Daud's site - which is daudtoraja (one word) dot com
