I loved the 11th century Round Tower and Monastery in Inniskeen, such a beautiful site to wander in. It is located a short distance from the main road along the Glebe behind a Primary School.
The ruined monastery is located beside a beautiful stream with the base of a round tower beside it. There is an elegant 19th century church on the site too as well as the 17th century tomb of the McMahon chieftains to the left and slightly behind of the church as you face it.
The remains of St Daig’s monastery at Inniskeen are to be found in the church cemetery. A display board by the wall tells you that the first reference to the existence of a monastery here is 685 and the death of the last recorded monk took place in 1085. It is said that the remains of Brian Boru who was killed in the Battle of Clontarf in 1014 stopped here on the way to Armagh for burial.
The Round Tower is 12 metres high and constructed of hammered whinstone with a raised doorway 14 feet above the ground. There are trees around it that add to its sense of mystery and character. The site was burned in 789.
It is free to enter and there is plenty of on-street parking nearby. It is about a 4 minute walk from the Patrick Kavangh Centre which is why most people visit Inniskeen, but this beautiful, serene site should not be missed either1
