This is the biggest site in town, the remnants of a medieval castle. You will find it at the harbor, by the sea as it was a means of protections from seaside attacks. You can do a little tour of the tower.

Very nice, well-kept ruins, well integrated into the city. Nothing spectacular, but very pleasant. Worth a look if you're nearby.

Upon entering the castle we expected a classic visit of the monument. Actually the visit is a virtual guided tour, which tells the story of Durres over the centuries. We really enjoyed the visit: it is an innovative way to revive the tower and, in the meantime, show some works on display at the Archaeological Museum (closed during our visit for reconstruction work due to the earthquake).

The castle of Durrës is nothing but the surrounded old town. The city was first fortified in the 6th century by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius I, who was from Dyrakia. The original walls were destroyed by an earthquake in 1273, but were rebuilt by the Venetians in the 14th century. Today, their western side, which makes up about a third of the total walls, together with three towers, is preserved.

This protective structure is part of what is left of the old city. Stone is impressive and there are some views from on top. We walked around it on our self-guided tour of the city.

The Venetian Tower is a remnant of the city's past defenses. If you happen to go by, it's worth entering – it was free when we visited, though there was no VR show or additional attractions. The view from the top is nice, but nothing spectacular. The tower actually looks better from the outside for photo opportunities. Overall, it's not a "must-see" spot in Durres, but it's cute if you have the time. However, if you're short on time, a visit to the beach might be more worthwhile.

Tours all day long. In English and Albanian. You can walk up steep steps to the top for a good look over the city and harbour. Up at the top they have interactive look out posts. Each tells a different historical story. So look through them all.
Downstairs they have a virtual reality headset and it shows you the ancient forum in all its glory as well as other ancient sites like the gladiator amphitheater. Lastly they have a story of Albania and Durres projected onto the walls. Well worth the entrance fee of around €5 or 600 let. One of the best things to do in Durres.

Poor maintenance . Walls are crumbling and the whole city is built around the ancient sites . Understand why this site was not given UNESCO status as all the modern ugly buildings are built around the castle . Big eyesore .

This is an ancient fort that is located down near the seafront. It is much better preserved than the roman amphitheatre so worth making the walkdown to the seafront to see.

It is a tower connected to the city's fortifications. To see inside there is only the terrace which is not accessible like almost all the attractions of Durres. As a sop they made us experience a miserable virtual reality of the ancient ruins.
