The Wadi Ghuweir Trail was the MOST BEAUTIFUL HIKE I've ever done in Jordan. Worth 100 stars!
The trail is in the shade most of the time and you see beautiful landscapes and nature (rocks, palm trees, water oases, volcanic rock).
I highly recommend doing it with the LOCAL GUIDE MOHAMMAD (mobile phone: +962772431532), he is the best guide you can imagine and has decades of experience as a forest ranger. You learn so much about nature with him & he helps you with difficult sections of the trail (without a guide you would be lost)
You can also stay at his home with his warm family for very very little money - his wife cooks delicious food (vegetarian/vegan on request) and makes you feel at home. Highly recommend this, no hotel in Dana could offer more.
I will never forget this trip, thank you Mohammad for your hospitality!

The Wadi Ghuweir or Wadi Al-Nakheel is at the end of a very steep road whose last part is stony. We had an SUV so we weren't worried. This canyon, carved by a stream, is not far from Dana and the village of Al-Mansoura.
At the end of the road there is a small parking lot where you can park, free of charge. The path is well signposted, and the GPS will take you there without problem. If you do not have GPS or internet, it is always possible to get there via geolocation apps that work offline.
Once the car is parked, just follow the signs and descend left into the river bed. So it took at least 1h30 of walking to reach the oasis where the vegetation is lush and the palm trees grow on canyon side. There are some passages that are a little more complicated but they are arranged accordingly with wall sockets type climbing and iron parts as in via ferrata but much easier, obviously. But once you reach the "oasis", you think it was worth it because the place is so pretty, encased in this canyon where vegetation seems to rest on the walls. It feels like a secret corner.
So we walked about 3h round trip and we were only the two people in the canyon. There was absolutely no other soul living during our hike in the streambed. Of course, it is recommended to wear good shoes or even water shoes if you intend to go further.
A fantastic adventure.

It is heaven on Earth. It is truly an amazing site for hiking. The water is beautiful, the view of the canyon is breathtaking, and the mountains look different with each step you take.

Stunning,.. absolutely stunning. One of the hight lights of our trip in Jordan. We had a local guide. Even though we could have done the trek without. Very surprising, at one point the creek disappears in the ground and pops up meters further. The Oleanders were in bloom. A dip in a pool. Tea in a secluded spot. Fossilized creatures can be found among the rocks. There are not enough words to describe this amazing experience

It was NOV 22 when we met the Bedouin guide Suleiman (+962780754372 WhatsApp, speaks English). He raved about Wadi Ghawer and its natural beauty and persuaded us to go on a day hike. We will always be grateful to him for that, as it was an unforgettable and fascinating day for us. It has now been exactly a year and we are still dreaming about it. I can recommend Suleiman as a hiking guide. He introduced us to nature/culture, led us safely through small climbing sections and cooked wonderfully for us on the fire. On our own we would never have discovered animals such as frogs, crabs... It is also important to pay attention to the seasons/weather conditions, as rain can create a raging river in the narrow wadi. So you are on the safe side with a local guide.

Great trekking, almost no tourists. Shoes for water necessary at least in some places. Best option is to go with local guide.

A fantastic hike!! 😍 We walked the hike to the palm beans and then back again. This took us a total of +- 3 hours. We did the way back at a good pace so that we would be out of the mountains before sunset. Highly recommended!

Wadi Al Ghuweir is very beautiful and natural (outside of the graffiti, garbage, and thoughtless bathroom practices of people), that I imagine that Wadi Al Ghuweir is how the Siq looked to the Nabateans when they first arrived all those years ago. My suggestion, go to the Siq before going to Wadi Al Ghuweir or you risk being disappointed in the Siq (outside of the splendor of exiting to the Treasury). If you are thinking of going to Wadi Al Ghuweir, keep in mind that it is is not an easy hike. It involves climbing up and down large boulders that have somewhat challenging metal footsteps, smaller boulders with no ladders, ankle-deep water in some places, and knee-deep water in others--the water level changes depending on timing of any rain. A walking stick is very helpful. There are no bathrooms or sources of drinking water. Outside of the ladders, it is completely "unimproved," which makes it an even better hike. For those who are considering bringing children, the ladders are a challenge for anyone under 5 feet tall so you might have to hand smaller children up and down the rock surfaces. Overall, the walk, hike, and wade to the waterfall and back took all day and we walked around 10 miles (around 15 kilometers). Insider tip, stop at the oasis and skip the trip to the waterfall. The oasis is the highlight, and you will only add a lot of extra steps to see a very mediocre waterfall.

Hello, We will visit Jordan in the first and second week of January (4-12) I read that the water is to high to walkt the trail in the winter period has somebody any experiences with doing the trail in the winter period? Thank you in advance for your reply. Greets from the Netherlands

Hallo!

Is it possible to go way and back through Wadi Ghuweir? I am not interested in doing the entire hike, the siq part is what I want. Thanks!

You could go from Dana to Feynan Ecolodge, then back up to the villages. Be worth asking Feynan or Dana village if you can get a Jeep ride down and then back on foot through the Wadi. We had 4x4 support to the camp so it should be possible; be worth taking a guide like Ali from Dana

Do need a guide to explore this area? Or are their signs to guide you?

I was asked this question by email and I copy it here.

Hi,
How did you organise the trek in Wadi Ghuweir. Did you need a guide and what was the cost?
Thanks
There was only me and my daughter so I don't think any guides were interested so we went unguided. To be honest its a trivial matter of walking downstream at all times only a total moron could get lost, there is nowhere else to go! If there was a lot of water I would advise against anyway as it might be uncomfortable and tiring walking through significant water flow. We DID hire a car and driver from the Dana Tower Hotel, who took us to the start and picked us up at the other end and took us (and our bags) to Petra. This was bundled in the whole package we had arranged with our local agent, I suspect he got significantly better deals than we would have got and passed at least some over to us. Consequently I cannot comment on the cost.
There are no difficult places to pass. Two apparently high drops (perhaps 2+m) can be circumvented by wedging yourself in adjacent cracks (at least one is round the side) and wriggling very safely down. Will not work if you are very fat! Two others by waterfalls have wooden poles than you can sit aside and bump down to the other side.
I am a somewhat overweight but moderately fit 68 year old. You will need to take plenty of water.
Also note that you start very close to Shobak Castle and it would be possible to spend 40 mins there if you are reasonably fit and the walk only takes 7 hrs.
