This is a beautiful area close to town but off the beaten path. Roads are paved and easy to follow. Lots of hiking options. Campground onsite.

I camped here for 2 nights over the past weekend. I LOVED it! The trails are awesome! Great scenery, especially since the hills are so green right now after the recent storms. Saw some coyotes loping in a field and heard their calls every night. As a camper, it's nice that they lock the gates. It means that inconsiderate campers can't come in late at night and make all this noise. This place is really a treasure! So much solitude on the trails and a great place for wild animals! Thanks so much Wildlands Conservancy!

Fun way to spend a half day or longer if you want. Lots of hiking choices. Ran into a park ranger at the waterfall and he was very friendly and recommended which trails might be best for a casual walk. Saw 5-6 deer-like animals on hillside when we drove in. Nice restrooms. Planning to return here next time we are in Bakersfield.

We were passing through Bakersfield en route to Los Angeles and decided to go see some of the wild flowers. This reserve came up on a general google search and was dog-friendly (dogs on leash), so we drove the 30 odd minutes from downtown Bakersfield. There were some small blossoms and we didn't see any huge carpets of blooms, but the preserve is nevertheless beautiful. There were not many people there when we went which added to the tranquility and beauty.

Wind Wolves Preserve is one of Kern County's best kept secrets!! It is a fun place to go for exercise and see some of Mother Nature's beauty at the same time. Plenty of hiking trails for everyone ranging from easy to moderate.
Highly recommend!!

We were looking for a good place to hike and Wind Wolves did not disappoint. We took the 8:30 shuttle van to get us out as far as possible. From our start we were all alone in the valley of rolling hills and mountains. We saw a tarantula, lizards, birds, and elk! Lots of plants in the beginning with nasty sticky thorns, they covered our pant legs. The higher we went to prettier the area became. The rangers were FABULOUS!!! So informative!! Tons of free programs! A must do!

Our grandchildren’s school took thenm to Wind Wolves as a field trip for 5th graders! They took a sack lunch and made the trip on the school bus! They were all very excited to see what lives in the wild around Kern County. They really enjoyed the reptile exhibit and were told about the native grasses, flowers and actual wildlife that live here! They came home very excited about what they learned and what they got to see! Very good and great for field trips or a visit with family and friends!

it's about 40 miles south of Bakersfield, so it's pretty much off the beaten path. you won't have to worry about crowds. we went in early fall and even though everywhere around you it's brown, it was beautiful. the mountains on both sides as you walk along the trails are really nice. the hiking is along the valley floor for the most part so it's not a strenuous hike. you won't realize it, but you are climbing the entire time. after 2 hrs the elevation gain was about 800'. we never felt it. we then took the left hand turn to go to the reflection pool. to reach it you need to go over the mountain range which involves climbing a quick 400'. but once you reach the top (takes about 20 minutes from the time you get on this particular path) it's about a 15 minute downhill walk to the pool. very interesting rock formations too. roundtrip for the pool is about 10 miles. took us about 4 hrs. well worth it. just bring water and snacks. I'm guessing that this might not be too popular in the summer as it probably gets well into the 90s. it's open from 8am till 6pm. bet this place looks awesome in April.

It was a good day! weather was cool, flowers blooming and all the runners participating in either the 5K or 10K were like all runners attitude. Good sport! I did not do either run but I had a good time waiting for my friend M that participated in the 10K run. I also enjoy seen couple of my running friends participating in the 5K run.

There is no entrance fee and official events there are also free; however the Wildlands Conservancy which maintains it does accept voluntary donations through their website.
Links are not allowed in my answer so if you google Wildlands Conservancy--Wind Wolves Preserve, you can get to their website which has a lot more information on visiting it and an event schedule.
