The Malki Museum, located inside The Morongo Native American community land near Banning,California is an excellent cultural, visual and learning experience for the entire family!
The Malki Museum is now open to visitors to share cultural awareness and encourage preservation of Southern California Indian cultures, along with other Indians having historical and cultural ties to Southern California, for future generations. The museum features collections and displays of art, artifacts, and historical materials of the Indians of the San Gorgonio Pass Area, and acts as a common meeting ground for Natives and non-Natives to learn about the past.
The staff is welcoming and offer insight into So Cal Native American culture and art.
They have books, gifts and memorabilia available, free parking and there is no charge to visit this educational center!
This is an excellent visit when you're in Banning,Morongo,Cabazon area of Southern California!

Although the museum space is small, the Malki holds many events throughout the year that are well worth attending. The staff are kind and helpful, and the outreach to anyone interested in learning more about local Native culture is outstanding. The Agave Roast, preceded by a field trip to harvest up in the mountains, is heartily recommended. Anyone who wants to understand the history and prehistory of the region ought to check out the Malki Museum.

Entry is via the Malki Road through the Guard Gate - present your drivers license. Drive carefully up the road and the Museum is on the left side. Pull in an park. The Museum building is plainly marked.

Go inside and view the exhibits. Please leave a donation to help with the upkeep. This is a nice history of the area and what has happened. There is a Willie Boy exhibit also, which a movie was made with Robert Redford ( the movie did not should all the facts). Query "Willie Boy" manhunt and read the Myth.

Outside is a garden that contains many of the native plants of the area that were available as a food source. All very interesting to see and understand this part of history.

When I saw a sign for the museum I thought it would be a great learning experience. The museum is free to go into (they do ask for a donation), it is small, but we had a very knowledgeable guide who took us through each display case and artifact step-by-step. She offered us so much information that it was hard to take it all in. The museum seemed to have a lot of material on the use of local plants for food, medicines, etc. They also have a fairly well signed herb garden, with a folder one can use to identify all of the uses of the plants that one sees.
The only thing I found odd was that to get onto the reservation, one has to go through a check point that was almost as rigorous as entering a military base.
Still, the visit was great and I hope to go back, and to learn more or be reminded of more.

This Museum says that it is the first California Museum Founded by Native Americans. It is on the Morongo Indian Reservation and you have to enter through the gate so just follow the signs when you get off I10. It is interesting for the native artifacts and photos inside. You cannot take pictures inside but you can outside. They have a great selection of books they publish on culture and such. The GREAT part is the Temalpakh Garden which features only local botanical species used in the daily life of the Cahuilla Natives. It has both English and Native American spellings on all the plants and trees. There are several special events held there so go to the website and get the schedule. I know I will be going back to the Fall Gathering.
