If you are in Machrihanish just go. It’s worth the walk.

We sat in the observatory for an hour. It passed so quickly because it was so interesting. David and his co-observer ( really sorry not good with names) were fab at pointing out all the local wildlife. We are a bit wildlife and bird “dim” but that wasn’t a problem. We could have stayed for hours. And we saw sea otters. Just go. And donate. It’s amazing.

Disappointed at the end!

We trecked to this what we thought was a proper bird hide only to find it was a bit of a shed that was mostly locked up and inaccessible! You had way better views all around the shed and up the neighbouring hill where the trig point is if you could with stand the buffeting wind at that point! Next to no effort has recently been put into this place, it looks like it was someone’s idea 10 years ago now he’s left and it is just about staying in place. It’s a real shame as there’s not even a board to write what’s been seen in that location etc.

Wrong time, day and weather for me!

I was somewhat disappointed after finding the observatory as it was closed with nobody around. Despite the rain, I sat in the hide watching the few birds around (wrong tide?) and spotted a solitary seal. As I was leaving, a couple turned up but they stayed even less time than myself.
However, I can imagine that on the right day and at the right time, it could be a great place to spot wildlife. The decor in front of the observatory is fun.

Great view of seabirds and seeing seabirds diving for food
We met a couple documenting number of birds

An interesting, I would think mainly seasonal sea-watching point! Probably good on a north to westerly wind. I would certainly like to visit it again !

Great place to visit

The signposting to this place is not the best. Don't be put off just follow unmetalled road to the farm as the observatory building is towards the back of the farm right on the shore line. The main cabin was closed due to COVID but there were two open hides on the side where we spent over 2 hours watching a few seabirds. I write a few which was a bit disappointing for us which we think was due to the tide. But we did spot a seal's head several times too. Nevertheless we enjoyed it a lot and if we would be in the area again we definitely will come back.

closed but still worth it

2020年9月

was closed (maybe due to Covid or being 4pm?) but it's still lovely to sit in the sheltered hide areas and just look out to sea. Quite a few Eiders today

Fantastic place.

This place is well worth visiting, for anyone with even the slightest interest in birds or wildlife in general. The area is stunning so even if the observatory isn't open, it's still worthwhile. The warden, Eddie, is so passionate and full of knowledge, and is happy to teach novices like myself. I learnt a lot in my few hours there,and look forward to returning.

PS - The place is run and funded by volunteers, so if visiting I am sure they would appreciate a donation - however small - to their costs.
