This place is highly overrated. $35 USD per person. It is good because they include a towel and a locker so that’s a plus, but half of the pools/hot springs were closed. There was a couple “walking trails” they said. Also closed. The signs on the pools were inaccurate (which isn’t a huge deal but could tell others were walking into pools expecting them to be cooler and they were the hottest ones haha was actually funny to watch)
The signs at the front portray it as a very large property and tons of space, but in reality is small, condensed and HEAVILY over populated in there. And we weren’t even in tourist season. I can only imagine in December and January. We left relatively early due to how crowded it was. This place is nothing compared to Baldi hot springs in La Fortuna.
They do provide a bowl of Mud so you can mud yourself up which was fun, and memorable, and if you’ve already paid to enter into Rincon national park and not sure what to do the rest of your day - then it can be relaxing (if not crazy crowded) but overall - I wouldn’t go out of your way to visit

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re glad to hear that you appreciated the inclusion of towels and lockers and that the volcanic mud experience was a memorable highlight of your visit.
Occasionally, weather conditions require temporary closures to ensure guest safety and the preservation of the natural environment. We understand how this may have impacted your experience and appreciate your patience.
The Río Negro Hot Springs offer a unique setting within the heart of nature, with pools formed naturally by volcanic activity over centuries. While the property differs in size and style from other hot springs in Costa Rica, its charm lies in its connection to the surrounding wilderness and its authenticity.
We value your feedback and will use it to make necessary improvements. Should you decide to visit us again, we would love the opportunity to provide a more enjoyable and relaxing experience.

There is an attendant at the entrance that provides towels. The changing room has toilets but no showers. The lockers HAD keys to lock up with, but most were missing the key. Even fewer keys on the men's side.
You definitely want a swimsuit and flipflops (water shoes) because the paths are gravel and stone.
Went in rainy season and the pools were not picturesque blue, but they were hot. And each pool was marked with temperatures so you could start low and get hotter (or vice versa). Pools are not huge, and definitely not deep, so you can sit on the bottom and keep your head above water.
You have to hike across suspension bridges to get to the mud pot side where you can smear volcanic mud (provided by an attendant) over yourself and your friends, snap photos, then climb into a thermal pool -- or stand under a shower head.
Overall, the thermal soak was great. Definitely not a "spa" experience, but enjoyable. And perfect after a day's travel (or hike).

Wasn’t worth $35 each. The hot springs were warm but waters were stagnant waters. The pools didn’t seems to be clean. Very cloudy and dirty. We got tons of bug bites and ticks! My husband and I pulled he ticks off of our bodies when we got home. . Gross!! 🤮 The road was terrible to get to. The front office workers didn’t like when you cracked jokes. They seem to be over the tourist people.
Next time I will be paying money to a resort hot springs facility. I rather pay more money for a nicer facility.

I should’ve read these reviews before going. I honestly don’t understand the high ones. This has an exorbitant fee coupled with an entry fee to the area to enter small pools that though warm to hot had the whiff of something hot water was piped into and not natural. I’ll have to visit something better to replace this memory. I would recommend skipping this one.

This was a wonderful day trip. We stayed in Papagayo, but our group of 4 rented a car for a few days, so we drove here. We did the 35 USD admission price and reserved online the night prior. When anyone arrives, there is security at the parks entrance. If you have a reservation, show it to the officer working the gate, then you do not pay admission. It is pretty cheap, but not necessary when you reserve in advance. When you get to the hotel, stay left until you see the open air desk. There are water machines, change rooms and washrooms here. Very clean and available. Once you get your bracelet you go another 6 km or so to the hot springs. Follow the signs for entrance and do not try to take a short cut over the first bridge, it is meant for one way traffic leaving. ….. now if you decide you want to do the mud treatment, which I recommend for the experience, just go to the staff member . You must be dry and then they give you a bowl of mud to spread on which is done in the same area you got it. That way you don’t make a mess everywhere. Once it dried for us, we washed it off in the creek. Our skin actually felt amazing then we sat in most of the hot spring tubs, taking our time and enjoying the relaxation. We did leave a tip as the employee never stopped cleaning, organizing, giving information or providing mud. It seems the tours move quickly as we saw several arrive after us and leave before us. If you can do it yourself, I recommend it, but of course that isn’t always an option. There are some pipes running through the area, but look at it for what it is. Costa Rica is harnessing natural energy to provide power in an environmental way, tapping into these geothermal energy sources. When you are enjoying nature, just know these pipes are preserving it. There are change rooms when you arrive, there are washrooms, towels provided and a hiking trail across for the parking lot. The trail goes to waterfalls you can swim in. We swam in the 3rd waterfall, however, I feel the second would have been better. I guess all I can say is for 35 USD, you get scenery, volcanic mud, natural hot springs, waterfalls and an incredible way to spend a day in Costa Rica.

The place is beautiful surrounded by nature.
To get to the place you have to walk about 10 minutes. Access is easy and the trails are very well maintained.
There are different very clean pools at different temperatures.
There is an opportunity to put mud on your body.
After relaxing in the hot water pools, going to the cold water black river is very relaxing.
I was staying at the Hacienda Guachipelin and the hot springs are included and the hotel gives you towels.
To finish, I can only recommend this beautiful place and for me it was an excellent end to a day of adventure.

Disaqpointed is the best word I can use. Felt like a tourist trap....35 US per person and 29 per kid? I thought that was insane considering I drove myself there. Would have been 130 US just to get into the park park for the 4 of us. Add to that the locals gouging you another set fee just to access the area by closed gate....didn't seem worth it to me for what it was.
My suggestion is to go to rio Celeste and access their hot springs.

If you are staying at Hotel Guachipelin, do you have access to the hot springs for free or do you still have to pay the entrance fee?

No you don’t need a guide if you’re traveling by car. You get a map of the park when you arrive a the park gate. Simply ask them to point it out when paying. You pay a park entry fee (minimal) and then a fee to enter hot springs (if I recall, $15-20). Once you pay at the hot springs booth, it’s a short hike on a well defined trail.

Can you just drive to the hot springs and pay there to go in our do you have to go as part of a tour? We have a car and just want to go for the hot springs. Thanks!
撰写日期:2018年9月13日
Just like others have said you can drive there. If you are staying at Hacienda guachiplean you just have to pay for lockers. It is a cool spot to chill...go before noon because everyone comes here after their tours are finished in the afternoon. We went twice and the first time it was crowded because we went at 4pm. The next day we went early in the morning and were the only ones.
撰写日期:2018年9月14日
Yes, about an hour and change to get there. I would also suggest visiting Rincon de la Vieja national park, which is close to the hot springs.
撰写日期:2018年5月30日
Only if you wake up early. Unlike in the USA, in CR you drive a lot slower and the roads tend to not be great.

Do you have to buy your ticket in advance or at Hacienda Guachipelin, or can you just drive to the springs and pay admission there?
撰写日期:2018年3月23日
You can just purchase admission there. I took the free shuttle from Hacienta Guachipelin to the gate, purchased my ticket and walked in. They also provide a towel and lockers.

Do we have to have a guide, or can we do the hikes on our own? We are looking to hike for a couple of hours and then relax in the hot springs and river. We are on a tight budget, so we have to explore a lot on our own. We have a car and are located in Playa Potrero. Is this place easy to locate?
撰写日期:2016年6月23日
We drove to the hot springs and did short hike and hot springs on our own. There is a fee for this attraction. They provide towel, banos changing rooms. Be advised there are tour buses and the hot springs can be crowded. We lucked out and left as they arrived.

we will be there on monday as well. what can we do on monday. are there hikes that we can do? Are there things to do outside the park? Also, do we have to pay to get into the park everyday per person or if you pay for one day is it good for a several days like it is in us.
撰写日期:2015年9月20日
The Monday we were there we found the following to do around the park - it filled the day. First off, you'll have to pay about $2/person (pay in colones) at the entrance to the hotel grounds to even get to the park entrance/other attractions. It's worth it, and they keep up the grounds nicely :) There's a nice waterfall hike by the entrance to the park. The park entrance will be closed, but just before it there's a little restaurant. You can park there, and there's a trailhead in the parking lot. Veer right when the trail splits and it takes you to a good fall with a decent swimming hole. Slightly back down the road from that restaurant, you can turn off and go to the hot springs. Then we stopped by the hotel lobby and they gave us a map that directed us to another waterfall hike as well, this one has a trail head closer to the entrance to the hotel grounds. You can stop by the lobby first to get the map before you start, as I believe it pointed out both waterfall hikes and the hot springs. If you're looking to spend more money, there was also a zipline course on the grounds, and some horseback activities.
As far as I could tell, park admission was only good for 1 day. Honestly, if you get there right when it opens, do the blue lagoon/waterfall hike first, then the loop trail to the sulfer pits, you can likely do that entire portion of the national park in one day as long as you're relatively fit.
