Free and Peaceful
2021年8月
The Nature Center is a nice stop to make and walking around the lagoon is extra special. Now the new bridge is open which you can walk between Cardiff and Solana Beach.
Both paths are lovely to walk and observe the surrounding areas.
The Rangers are professional, informative, and personable.

Ecological haven

Serene, quiet and well maintained, San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve is a pleasure to visit whether you just want to enjoy a nice nature walk or just want to have some quiet time. There are quite a few interesting birds when we were there and we also saw a sting ray in the lagoon. Plenty of picturesque spots. There is also a visitor center where you can get good information on the types of birds and animals that are found in this reserve. The staff that operate this reserve are very friendly and they will not hesitate to answer any question. Note: The park opens at 9 am and closes at 5 pm.
There is a small parking lot so if it gets filled, you may have to park in the nearby neighborhood.

Enticing chaparral

Entered this ecological reserve by the N. Rios trailhead, with limited parking. Wanted to do some nature photography in this birder's paradise. Over 40% of all bird species in the U.S. has been seen here. I hiked into the Middle Basin where a helpful Nature Center could be seen across the bay. Varied habitats included fresh water and salt marsh as well as coastal sage scrub, ideal for observing over 300 species of birds, including the Light-footed Clapper Rail I had observed briefly in 2004. If you take the steep trail to the right, California Quail can be observed but not today. This lagoon is best visited during migration, usually September through December. Birds seen in previous years included American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Marbled Godwits and a host of shorebirds. This July morning was quiet. I only observed Egrets, Willets and a Whimbrel. The Conservancy is currently dredging and renovating the reserve to create more mudflats for birds to rest and feed on. This disruptive exercise is probably the sole reason I didn't see too many birds. A trail takes you under I-5 to the East Basin but I believe it was closed.
A good interesting walk, well worth a visit, but migration time is the best time to go if you can.

San Elijo Lagoon Nature Reserve
2018年12月 • 家庭
Tidal wetlands are among the most biologically diverse and abundant habilitates known to scientists. Salt, brackish and fresh water species of fishes and mollusks, and crustaceans depend upon the in and out flux of fresh and salt water microbiota (food). Further, the mud banks along the water coarseways provide unique intertidal caverns and mud holes occupied by species rarely seen by the casual observer. Marshland and waterways attract thousands of bird species, many of whom hunt for fish and crustaceans as they fly north in the summer and south in the winter.

The eco center describes the varied biomes within the region and help visitors identify the species found there.

Currently the lagoon is suffering near disaster as expansion of the I-5 corridor has given permission to ransack the backwater lagoon, plowing under innumerable “mini” species to provide larger, more open waterways and fewer mudflats to avoid seasonal blockage of flow. The years of “improvements” will take decades to repopulate the microbiome required to reinstate the subtle balance of life and nutrients provided for the biology (like osprey, clapperrails and numerous other wonderful creatures which visitors can see.

Well worth the donation to visit.

Great, but lagoon improvements are not complete
2019年10月
Once the major reconstruction of the lagoon, with a new bridge and trails, is all done, and the nearby widening of the freeway and construction of a new cloverleaf intersection is also finished, and once the wild animals and wild plants (estuarine, marine and terrestrial) have had time to recover completely from this vast disruption, this whole area should become really outstanding. I would guess that finishing the construction and the recovery process will take more than two years from now before it is complete.

However, you can already walk the older trails and there is plenty of nature to see other than the areas which are being worked on.

A nic e place to stop
2019年9月
We were simply driving around and are suckers for a brief walk in nature and some education. This place has a relatively new and well designed visitor center with great exhibits, especially for kids (and for us adults). The brief walks get you outside and it is great to learn about this ecology. Lots of birds but understand this is not like being away from civilization.
