We had escaped the North East cold for a visit with my daughter and her husband in CA and decided to do some hiking. The Darrington Trail turned out to be quite a nice choice. Unfortunately, it's an in-out trail, so we did not hike the entire 16 miles (both ways) for the complete trip but turned around after about 90 minutes. The scenery was soothing and changed enough not to be boring, we did not encounter any mountain bikers, not may other hikers either, in fact. The walking was not too hard, but some slopes required a little bit of endurance. Overall a pleasant experience.

Several of my co-workers are active young folks and his was a fun day out for a walk. Others were jogging, riding bicycles, a few on skates. Nothing like fresh air and sunshine ... oh yeah !!

This where the raft trips down the South Fork American River get out and also is the entrance to biking and hiking trailheads.
There's really not a lot to do right there EXCEPT:
The bridge usually has a huge rope swing hanging from the bottom of the bridge. With high water it's about a 15ft drop to the water after swinging. In low water it's more like 40-50 feet and a wild ride. Fun.

What a lovely trek near the river. Through shady glens and down to a creek. The kids splashed in the water. We could have gone much farther but it was getting late. We opted to head back up the trail dotted with poppies, blue dicks, iris and more. Lots of butterflies and hummers on a spring day. Across the river, we spotted an American River jumper We hollered across to him but he changed his mind and didn't jump after all--even though he had a videographer with him. Fun hike. A stroll. Careful of snakes though.

This is a great little trail. The first portion of the trail is pretty exposed on a cliffy hillside. Once past that, the singletrack is quite fun with some whoop-de-doos, some hills, some water crossing (when there's water), etc. There are some options to add some large hill climbs etc. Bring water! It gets hot in the summer!

I have a love hate relationship with this ride. I don't like the first mile because of the technical climb and drop off and I grumble through it knowing that it gets better and better as you make your way through the loop part.

This trail gives a nice view of the south fork. It's mostly used by bikers, but is good for hiking, as well. There is some shade along the way, but not a lot. It has a fair amount of up and down, but overall, is manageable.

Its the alternative trail to the Auburn Ravine area. It is technical and rocky, but the lakeside and hill top views are worth every pedal stroke.
