I volunteered for 1 week at SCML and really enjoyed my stay. It was my first time traveling alone so it was a great way to get to know the community and meet fellow travelers with similar interest (in this case, diving and eco concious projects).
The group is divided into 2 - land project team and divers. The divers do 2 dives a day to maintain their coral nursery, pier clean up and other things like fish and see horse identifications. The land project team helped to start a garden for the local medical center.
The included accommodation is basic but nothing less than the other guesthouses on the island. They serve Western and local foods 3 times a day.
The program is perfect for people who have a generous heart for saving marine life and to learn about sustaining a village life. The job is not hard and you will have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the island. My "manager" or dive master, Pedro was knowledgeable and helpful.
M'pei bay is a hippie / backpacker / very affordable place and is also very beautiful and relaxed. I loved the bay and didn't need to explore to any other parts of the islands.
My only wish was that more local people were involved in the program and diving to share the same goals as the organization to keep marine life safe.

I loved it!!!! It was an amazing experience! I got my Open Water Scuba certification while I was there, which is awesome that it was made available before I started working on the coral nursery. Working on the Coral Nursery was a memorable experience. Pedro oversaw the project in the island and did such a great job. He’s very informed in the subject and takes his time to explain it. The fishes are so funny and memorable. They gather around you as you clean the reef. Staff was really friendly! I had a minor allergic reaction and James, project manager, and his wife Sin made sure I received proper treatment. They were awesome! I definitely recommend this program! Worth every penny!

I went with my 11yo daughter to get certified and take part in the marine conservation project. We only had one week and it was the rainy season, so we lost a day or 2 due to poor weather, which I can't blame anyone for. The organization could have given us other useful tasks, but the manager of the organization was almost never on the island. In the whole week we were there, we only saw him once after he dropped us off that first day. We enjoyed the dives and our time on the island and I do feel that the project could be a good one if they really are using the money for what they SAY they are (which is questionable). However, I'm unhappy because I had asked ahead of time about whether they had an underwater camera so that I would have pictures & videos of our experience for our memories and was told they had one we could use. We were only given it for about 20 minutes on one dive when the manager came to dive with us that once and, despite numerous emails asking for the pictures & videos to be sent to us, got all sorts of excused and delays but never got them. I think that was really lame of them! I would've remembered it positively, but the fact that they broke their promise means we have no photos or videos to look at, which has left a sour taste in my mouth. :( It's unfortunate.

The concept is brilliant. What I witnessed in the 2 weeks that I partook in the program, was not.
Sexual misconduct, assault, and poor mistreatment of actual staff, is what stands out in my mind.
If this is the first program of it's kind, I sincerely hope that someone else starts another one, but properly.
Basically, the wrong man is running it.

I went on a snorkeling trip around koh rong samloem, booked it at the Khmer kitchen on the island. The knowledgeable guide explained everything about the corral sanctuary and the problems and possibilitys of the work they are doing. We went to 4 different snorkeling spots, were able to see the sanctuary and cleaned a part at a little waterfall from rubbish.

Very productive program which produces clear results. Great innovation going on in the coral nursery which shows impressive outcomes.
The team is very friendly yet professional, definitely satisfied with my experience which has taught me a lot from a conservation point of view and was also fun!
Would recommend to anyone!

Organisation recommandée par mon hostel, je suis allée dîner dans leur restaurant pour en savoir plus. L'homme qui tient l'organisation nous avait accueillis avant de partir et sa femme qui tient le restaurant avait un comportement bisarre. Vu qu'elle s'est trompée dans ma commande, l'attente supplémentaire a fait de nous les derniers clients du restaurant. Jusque la tout aurait pu aller, mais l'horreur est survenue après : une fois servie la femme décide de nous hurler du karaoke dans les oreilles, puis à ma demande de baisser le son, s'énerve et met la musique de titanic à fond. Je décide de baisser la sono parce qu'on est seuls avec mon ami et qu'on s'entend pas. A ce moment là la femme decide de me chasser du restaurant violemment, je n'ai pas le temps de finir mon assiette. Choquée, de retour à mon hostel j'appelle James, le proprietaire du restaurant. Plutôt que trouver une explication, une excuse, bref un moyen de résoudre le différent, l'homme arrive bourré, me gueule devant tous les clients de l'hostel que le problème c'est moi et que je mérite ce qui m'arrive. Bien au delà d'une insatisfaction client on atteint un réel problème de respect. Sauver les coraux oui, cautionner de tels comportements non merci, surtout quand on sait que l'activité repose avant tout sur l'aide de volontaires qui payent quelques centaines de dollars chaque semaine.

We came to spend two weeks volunteering with SCML but ended up staying longer - for as long as somehow possible. The time on the island passed by incredibly fast, we enjoyed every minute we spent there. Everyday we were spoiled by the lovely cooks Ka and Dany with the most delicious food and were overwhelmed by the spectacular marine life. We went for many fun dives exploring Koh Rong Samloem’s reefs and had a lot of fun working on the coral nursery- carrying rocks, attaching corals to the new rock beds and measuring them. Not only did we work in marine conservation but as part of the community projects we also helped building a school’s playground. The local kids were enthusiastic to help us painting and it was amazing to become a part of the local community. In addition to all of these great aspects the most rewarding experience were the spectacular people we got to meet: First of all, the welcoming local people like our boat captain Mr Noi who enjoyed mocking us or the chief of the village who let us have a beer (or coke ;)) at his home . Then of course the amazing volunteers that even in such a short time became true friends. We spend a lot of time laughing together and it was always sad to see one of the volunteers leave . And last but not least thank you to James and Alay for making us part of your family- Koh Rong Samloem became our second home. Alay, we enjoyed our “shopping” with you, the dancing and the wonderful Karaoke. You’re an incredibly loving person and you have a great sense of humour. James, we could not have imagined a better ending for our trip. You really are making a difference and we learned so much for our lives. It was hard to see the island disappearing on the horizon and we will miss you all! Luckily, we did not have to say goodbye but we’re saying see you later! See you when you see me!

I had the most incredible 11 days working with Save Cambodian Marine Life. I got everything I wanted out of the program and much, much more. James was a great host and fantastic diving teacher. I learned so much from him. Beyond the diving and coral conservation work, the interactions we had with the local community were meaningful and rewarding. Lastly, the accommodations and food were terrific. I loved the atmosphere and all the other volunteers and people we interacted with.
I also got my diving certification with SCML. If you want to do this as well as volunteer, I suggest you book at least two weeks so that you have enough time to do everything.

Bara att vara med Dianne och ta del av hennes energi och engagemang är värt hela upplevelsen!
Jag var på ön i en vecka och trivdes hur bra som helst. Det kändes bra att kunna kombinera flera veckors semester med att bidra till att göra något aktivt för vår miljö. Att göra det genom att få dyka gjorde saken ännu bättre! ;)
Vi dök och tvättade korallerna nästan varje dag. Och varje gång var det nyfikna fiskar som kom och gjorde oss sällskap. De blev nästan som vänner! ;)
Det enda som drar ner mitt betyg är att jag hade förväntat mig mer engagemang med sjöhästar. Men det var inte säsong för det när jag var där - information som inte framgick i beskrivningen om vad volontärarbetet skulle innebära.
Underbara Dianne tog i och för sig med mig på ett "specialdyk" och hittade otroligt nog en sjöhäst "åt mig", vilket jag är mycket tacksam för, men jag reste ju i första hand för att "jobba med sjöhästar" och inte koraller...
