Great spot for picnic and boating on the lake. You can drive thru if you just want to see the reservoir dam. Tell the person at the entrance gate you just want to see the dam and they will let you stay for about 10 minutes or so. If you stay for a picnic or boating there is an entrance fee. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Whether your fishing or doing some sort of water contact sport, El Capitan Reservoir is a beautiful place to do it. And an added bonus if you go on Wednesday thru Friday, not at all crowded. Just wish we had a bit more rain to fill it back up as it is currently only about 1/3 full (April 2016)

The reservoir is so small now that jet-skis are allowed to run the entire lake. This makes for choppy water, and not-so-good wake boarding.
Get out there early, and the water is smooth as glass, and great for wakeboarding.
Lots of places to just pull up the boat and have a picnic. Have not seen the bald eagles lately, but always on the lookout for them.
Take a walk up from the water and find little wildflowers and lots of wild tobacco.
Please remember, this is San Diego's DRINKING water, so please don't pee in it. There are plenty of restrooms and porta potties, and please don't litter. Take care with all things that could blow away in the wind here. Put your cigarette butts in the trash. The fish, birds and wildlife thank you.

The water is cool and clean. The City of San Diego park rangers are friendly and can be stern when necessary to keep boat speeds in check. The price is great for using the boat ramp and water contact per person is reasonable. Stay the entire day but you may have to wait to get in as the number of boats in the water is monitored. Jet ski are allowed full access to the entire lake as well. There are porta potties around the distant parts of the shoreline and a floating one towards the north end of the lake. There are very few flat areas on the west side of the lake and the terrain is steep. Not well suited for younger kids unless you can all fit in the boat and then find a sandy beach else where across the lake.

There's a great 12-mile hike to the top of "El Capitan" peak in this park. It's a tough, hot hike (closed in the summer because it's too hot). Even in winter you need 3-4 liters/person of water. The views at the top are spectacular, but be careful because the last half mile to the top is relatively easy scramble, but it's easy to get lost heading back down. I need 6.5 hours to do the whole hike, that includes plenty of short breaks and a picnic at the top. The gates lock at 5, so you definitely want to start this hike in the morning so you don't risk getting your car locked in. Really fit hikers claim they can do it in a couple hours, I think those people must be marathoners because the constant steep uphill downhill is grueling and slows you down so much. I am in fine shape and I hike regularly and even without a picnic break I could not do this hike in less than 6 hours. I hear you can see eagles on this hike but I haven't yet :( great hike if you want a serious day hike near San Diego.

El Capitan reservoir is a place where you can run your boat or jet-ski and enjoy wildlife all around you.
We have spotted two bald eagles, an Osprey, deer, coyote, swallows, blackbirds, egrets, ducks, grebes, hawks and turkey vultures.
The reservoir is shrinking in size due to the awful drought California is experiencing. But still a great place to run your boat, jet-ski or spend the day fishing or just enjoying the "lake" with friends and family.
There is bait available if you need it at the upper parking lot.
Boats are not required, you can have a nice picnic right along the shore.
The admission price is reasonable and the staff are always nice.
Please remember this is San Diego's drinking water. Please don't pee in it. Restrooms are available at the boat launch and porta potties around the reservoir.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Please don't litter. Secure all litter in bags, it does get windy here regularly. And if you see stray cans, bottles or litter please pick it up!
I'll see you there!

So commercialized. I guess it's okay if you are someone who doesn't remember it the way it once was---sleepy and laid back. Now it is all about the money. Enjoy.
