Celebrated my birthday on the train with my husband and 100+ new friends. Service is exceptionally friendly. Food was mostly enjoyable. Wine and mimosas are obligatory. Views are great. Ride one car on way up, the other on way back to experience the nostalgia of mid-century class. Once in Santa Barbara, rented bikes, walked pier, took trolley up state to visit historic court house. Wine tasting galore! Lots of great places. Beautiful weather, friendly people, made this a great day & fun way to celebrate my birthday. Thanks to Conductor Bill & his amazing team!

We come from a small town so for us it was an adventure we had never been on a train before. People where nice. We did see a fight but that was the whole big city experience.

Taking a train trip on one of LA Rail's refurbished train cars is one of Los Angeles' best kept secrets. I've lived in Los Angeles for over 30 years and had never heard of LA Rail until I met the owner John at a recent travel convention. I went with my girlfriend to Union Station in downtown L.A. (this was a first for me) and got onboard a refurbished 1949 Pullman car (it even has a barbershop!) that along with two other refurbished cars, are hooked to several of Amtrak trains. The train car is called the Overland Trail and is owned by Conductor Bill who gave us the history of the car. Even though we were part of Amtrak's service, we were definitely having a different experience than those in the more modern Amtrak cars. The train leaves Union Station at 7:50am, makes a few stops in Burbank, Glendale, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, and Ventura, before arriving in Santa Barbara about 2 1/2 hours later.

For the price of the ticket you get breakfast (including Belgian waffles) going to Santa Barbara and dinner coming back. After you arrive in Santa Barbara, you have about 5 or 6 hours of free time. You can go with a husband and wife team from the train who lead you through an area called the Funk Zone where you can go wine tasting (hence the name "Vino Train") at several wineries just off State Street (the main drag in downtown Santa Barbara). My girlfriend and I went to the first winery (Santa Barbara Winery) and for $10, you get to taste six different wines that they produce. You have a choice of going to one winery, several wineries, or none at all-you can just walk around State Street on your own if you want.

After the winery, we took a short walk to the boardwalk and Pacific Ocean, and then walked up and down State Street for a few hours. We had lunch and did a lot of people watching but there are plenty of other things to do there. Due to the fact that somehow my watch was off by an hour, we almost missed the 4:32pm train back to Los Angeles and literally made it by 30 seconds. After walking around downtown Santa Barbara for several hours, it was great to get back on the train and relax. Dinner was served and we continued to talk with a very nice couple who were seated across from us during the entire trip.

In our car, I saw a lot of couples and groups-didn't see any kids but I think that kids would enjoy this. I had driven from L.A. to Santa Barbara several times before but this was the first time I took a train and I'm glad I did. Overall, I thought that this was a great way to experience train travel as it used to be, meet new friends, and do some sightseeing in scenic Santa Barbara. We are definitely going to do this again!
