Pretty run down city with very few places to eat. But close to the Redwood Parks.

Wonderful bike trail -- mostly flat, stunning views. The trail is in great condition. Views of the coast, of farmland, surrounding hills, and overhanging trees.

Hammond Trail is the location if the old Hammond Lumber Co. logging railroad between Samoa (mills) and the woods at Big Lagoon.

Took a pull off to the parking lot and walked a short distance through the trees to a great viewing area of the sun setting over the beach. Calm and peaceful area. Wish I had more time to explore.

There aren't many places to choose from to walk/hike in McKinleyville, so this is usually my go-to. It's a flat trail that extends around the way a bit, and it's quite nice and enjoyable for the most part, scenery-wise. Meadows and fields and barns. I saw some barn owls out there just the other day. Incredible. It was an awesome walk.
And there's a bridge, as you can see from the picture, but the bridge itself is covered in graffiti (sad, just sad) and there's almost always some sketchy vehicle sitting in the lot by the bridge, which makes it pretty aggravating.
Sometimes there's also a local loonie walking around yelling to himself. The trail itself is nice, but the people around here and the trashy things they do bring down the quality of the walk by at least 30-35%. Graffiti and trash, people leaving their dog's feces all over the place. It's pathetic. But it's the people, not the place...
Nice walk though. It's still usually enjoyable despite the vandals and loonies. Just wear sunglasses and a baseball cap so you can avoid eye contact with any of them you might see along the way.

Highlight is Hammond Bridge, old RR bridge across the Mad River. This trail/bridge is great for hiking or biking.

Easy to walk or ride a bike on. Great for kids. Good bird watching and away from the road most of the time.

Great coastal walk. This a historic trail following and dating back to the Hammond Lumber Co. logging railroad. The location is great for vistas of the beach, coast & ocean and Mad River. Barring rain or fog the weather is mild and can be warm in summer. Casual walk with no serious steep sections or difficult walking. Excellent for families and elderly folks. You can walk sections of the trail via the numerous road access points making it more suited to a range of abilities and ages.

The Hammond trail is great for biking, walking, jogging, skating, and I have even seen evidence of horse back riding. Quite a bit of it is paved and flat. Easy trails and beautiful views.

Located in the historical Hammond Logging Railroad Grade between Big Lagoon and Samoa. Great way to see the scenery of the Northcoast while getting some gentle exercise. Get to see the area from Clam Beach south through McKinleyville, across Mad River (old railroad nridge).
