Excellent early afternoon spent in the preserve
2021年10月
The water passing through, between and around the various palm trees out mid desert is awesome. I'm not a desert person usually but this green pop up goes Boom!

Ignore previous review by Elena O - there are no shops or restaurants or golfing here! It’s a nature preserve!
2021年10月 • 夫妻情侣
Drove up Thousand Palms Canyon Road, north of Palm Desert, to the McCallum trailhead. There is a sign on the right side of the road to turn left into the parking area but it’s currently gated off. Park along the side of the road with all the other vehicles. The sandy shoulder is plenty wide. The visitor centre is currently closed but Don, the docent, was there to answer any questions and was full of information about the preserve. We did 2 walks and to walk through the palm trees after being out in the hot desert sun was so wonderfully cool. There are also no maps or brochures currently available and Don suggested taking a picture of the trail maps and trail descriptions posted on the log cabin. It was only 24C when we were there but we were glad to have hats, sunglasses and lots of water.

It’s nice but wouldn’t travel 🧳 for it if you like dry places then yes there is shade some palm trees the waterfalls are dry. It was okay I live here so it’s something to do but I would not travel here. Rather go somewhere like Tahoe or Yosemite for hikes. Restaurants around are okay palm
Springs is in definitely needs work money 💰 invested. Palm desert is okay if you like golfing eating and spas . But that is it! Def not super exciting nor place where you come to shop not many stores. Some shops but nothing to drive for .. they need to spruce this place up a lot add more to it.

See a Desert Oasis
2020年11月
See a desert oasis! The pond and surrounding plants are fed by groundwater. Most of us read about oasis but never see them in real life. The Coachella Valley climate is similar to ancient Mesopotamia--that's why we can grow dates. Take your 6th grader here so they can "see" ancient history. It also offers good hiking trails although many of them are hot and unshaded so don't go in the hot months (go Oct-April).

Hiking at its best
2021年5月
After spending several hours exploring Cathedral City, we went over to the neighboring city of Thousand Palms to see what it had to offer. Located the Thousand Palm Oasis Preserve – Coachella Valley Preserve. This delightful oasis offers free admission and plenty of parking. Dogs are not allowed. This is Palm Tree heaven. The San Andreas fault line runs across the area and pushes groundwater to surface. Perfect for the California fan palms. There must be literally thousands of palm trees in this 20,000+ acres preserve. Located in the center of the preserve, is the Paul Wilhelm Grove, home of the Preserve’s visitor’s center. Tourist can visit the rustic “Palm House (Visitor Center) to learn about the San Andreas Fault and the Palm Oasis. Information pamphlets are available as well as a knowledgeable staff who will assists you. Maps of the preserve and trails are also available. Guided hikes can be arranged at the Center. The preserve has five hiking trails including the McCallum, Hidden Palms, Moon Country, Pushawalla Palms, and Willis Palms trails. Twenty-five miles of hiking trails wind through the oasis and cover a few different ecosystems ranging from sand dunes, mountain canyons, or dried up riverbeds. They are rated easy to moderate. The hike from the visitor center to the McCallum Pond at the Thousand Palms Oasis is a flat easy trail and covers two-mile roundtrip. The trail is on a raised wooden pathway winding through thick vegetation. Located along the trail one will observe several ponds, with the endangered pupfish and other wildlife in residence. Situated around McCallum Pond are several benches, the perfect spot for a picnic lunch prior to heading back to the “Palm House Visitor Center”. A great easy hiking trail, with lots of options for additional hiking. Ideal trails for all levels of hikers. Perfect location for spending time observing wildlife and enjoying an afternoon picnic with the family.

An oasis preserved
2021年4月
So much fun to see an actual oasis. It sounds like I've never been out of Kansas. I have in fact been to many continents. I just needed to head to California to see the oasis! And beautiful palms, growing in a natural state.

A hidden gem in the middle of the desert
2021年4月
If you are anywhere near the Coachella Valley, then definitely add this to your itinerary. While it isn't always open, try to time your visit so that you can hike into the oasis nestled amidst the palms. And, if you have extra time, factor in hiking some of the many trails that encircle it in the desert. They range from short to long, so be sure to bring water. Still, the highlight was the oasis itself, which flows one way from a crack caused by the San Andreas Fault. I can only imagine what it felt like for the first human to discover this abundance of shade and fresh water.

Great Winter trip using a VRBO and hiking the Coachella Valley Preserve Oasis
2021年2月 • 家庭
This Preserve has a nice mix of flat hiking with some climbs to get great views. We hiked thru the vegetation then up Squaw Hill with a 4 year old and a 1 year old. We were staying at a VRBO in Indio also with good walking, a play structure and a pool. Just perfect.

What a beautiful Oasis
2020年2月
We went to see the Coachella Valley Preserve. We had to walk to it and that was great for walking for the day.

When we arrived there were a lot of palm trees and water in the mist of the palm trees. This was the Oasis.

It was so beautiful!

We could see the mountain as well.

We loved this place.

A must see!

Three hikes in two days
2020年12月 • 夫妻情侣
We did three separate hikes in two days at the Coachella Valley Preserve. I will warn you to be very cautious when parking along the road to get to the trails as the trucks and cars fly by on this street has of the road. The McCollum trail takes you by the visitor center, which is closed, but you can still hike the trail through the palm forest. The oasis at the end of the trail is closed for rehabilitation, but it’s still a good 2 mile loop walk.

The second day we hiked the hidden Palm trail and then across the road to the palms nestled into the hillside. A great day of hiking, well marked trails and people were respectful and were masked and kept their distance.
