This museum is probably intended mostly for art history students at Stanford. Or locals looking for something free to do. Once you get past the grand and impressive lobby, art on the walls seems mostly to be there to illuminate some period in art history rather than for its greatness or importance and indeed, most of it is not very great. Some of it is good, mostly the Dutch paintings (Bosschaert, van der Heyden). But somehow the museum is mostly underwhelming. The Rodins, which the museum makes a big fuss over, are mostly posthumous casts and many of the paintings and sculptures are inferior to what is in the collections up Highway 101 in San Francisco’s museums; you’re better off there if you’re looking for a good museum to visit in the Bay Area. I visited because this museum appeared on a list of best university art museums in America in the Washington Post; I can only assume that the author either hasn’t actually visited this museum or confused it with the Anderson collection next door.

They have an extensive Rodin collection both inside the museum and in adjacent garden. Some great pieces including many famous ones. The temporary special "Morris Hirshfield Rediscovered" is not to be missed. The curator did a great job presenting the breath of his works and the background. Lots of great exhibits throughout the permanent galleries. A bite-size snapshot of a breath of time and art forms. Certainly the bargain of the century being free entry.

This museum features a garden filled with Rodin sculptures by one of the entrances plus interior galleries covering several regions of the world. The works span Europe, Asia, the U.S., and more across centuries up to almost the present day. A lot is packed into a relatively compact, modern space!
A bonus section features items related to the founders (and early history) of Stanford University -- one hopes that someday more of these items will be more clearly labelled or explained.

We did the "Highlights" tour which took about 45 minutes and were able to see all the major pieces in the museum. The collection of Rodin sculptures is impressive.

The building itself and the fantastic sculptures outside are worth a visit. But don't stop there, the art within is very enjoyable to see. You really must see Rodin's The Thinker. The piece is huge and great to see both from the ground level and the upper level looking down upon the work. Perched above is Betelgeuse, marvelous piece from Spencer Finch.
Our young kids breezed past many of the impressive works. However, there is plenty to keep entertained for several hours if you take the time.

Loved the entire art museum and the Rodin exhibit was over the top! Don’t miss it .. no fee required—just a reservation. Stanford U is so fortunate to have this treasure on its campus!

Great Rodin collection! The museum is free. Be sure to take a docent tour to learn more about the collection. The cafe is fabulous for lunch!

The Cantor Arts Museum is a breathtaking exhibit in Palo Alto. They are very friendly and have tons of unique exhibits.

A small but well curated collection. In addition the Anderson contemporary collection. The cherry on top of all this is the Rodin garden with one of the largest collections of this magnificent work. All within a few steps of each other. A real treat for anyone visiting the Stanford campus.

This is a lovely museum. Admission is free.The docents are very knowledgeable. I had a docent tour of the Rodin permanent exhibit and a docent tour of the Ansel Adams-Edward Weston exhibit. Both shows were excellent. Both docents were excellent. The cafe food was very good. Gluten-free items are available.
