We spent a couple of hours in this brilliant museum dedicated to the history of the railroad in California. The staff were so welcoming and informative. I particularly enjoyed meeting the staff in the dining and sleeping cars, and had a bit of deep and meaningful conversation with two delightful staff in the mail car. There was something for everyone here, from four to eighty-one years old: three generations in one family.
A special shout out to Gretchen in the store who saved the day by facilitating the replacement purchase, via email, of a tee shirt accidentally dropped in the old town. 👏👏👏

From the website, the directions were easy to follow. There's a parking garage nearby. The museum had good signage, was clean & well cared for. The gift shop was just the right size; with a variety of it items to choose from & not too big. They had even more trains than we expected! The exhibits were so well done; design, lighting, mannequins, colors, & placards.

First time in Sacramento, so had to visit Old Sac. Had a blast sightseeing the old buildings, beautiful smells from restaurants, awesome music, and lots of shopping! Felt very nostalgic, like I belonged. Would definitely go again. 🫠

Preserving history and telling interesting stories about people, this museum is one of the best railroad museums I have visited. The big trains and wide variety of artifacts are well preserved and accessible.
The place was full of schoolchildren, which was perfect. Us old folks meandered through the wide passageways reading all of the facts on the signs. They were brought to life with stories of individuals who made the railroads. The people who dug the tunnels, planned the routes, financed it and fed the people. Just about every occupation at that time in history was associated with the railroads.
They emphasized immigrants and minorities in an appropriate manner.
My favorite was the Great Northern Railway Post Office car I liked them all and will come back on my own and spend a few more hours.

I loved the guided tour! Our tour guide was very cheerful and happy and answered any questions our group had. We went on 1/31 with our scout troop. All of our scouts had an amazing time!

The idea of going to a railroad museum wouldn't normally be this reviewer's idea of a good time. But at the suggestion of a local, we went late one afternoon to the California State Railroad Museum in Saramento's old town.
It was definitely a "wow" experience. The building is smart and modern-looking (there was some construction going on when we visited). Tickets were $12 for adults, which we felt was well worth it. There was actually no line, since we got there at about 4 pm, which was only an hour before closing time. We parked just across the street on the east side at the Old Sacramento Parking Garage.
Besides actual full-sized railroad engines and cars of various periods we found a wealth of information in the displays about the role the railroad played in the history of California and indeed the entire western USA. The locomotives on display range from 19th Century all the way to a huge locomotive built in the 1940s. All looked excellently cared-for, with not a spot of rust to be seen.
The cars include old passenger wagons, as well as a preserved and furnished dining car, sleeping car, and mail car. Some of the exhibits are manned by museum guides, who are a wealth of knowledge about the egines and rolling stock and their histories. There is even a solid gold copy of the famous Golden Spike.
Overall, the CSRM turned out to be an absorbing and fun experience, with exhibits geared toward both adults and children. This reviewer's only regret was that we had only the one hour to explore the place. Even two hours might not have been enough to see everything properly.
The museum also has a gift shop. And note that on the Wednesday afternoon we visited, the nearby parking garage really started to fill up toward evening, presumably with folks coming to downtown restaurants.

What a delightful experience. We spent a great afternoon at this gem of a museum. So much history and great stories about the building of the American railroads. Our tour guide Robin was incredibly knowledgeable and make everything so incredibly interesting. Highly recommended!

Something for kids of all ages and interests - lots of old locomotives and railroad cars as well as model trains. You can even climb inside some of the cabs and walk through e.g. a genuine mailcar and see how letters were sorted as the train trundled across the country.
Very warm and engaging staff (dressed in Railroad uniforms) happy to talk about the exhibits and to answer endless questions.
The entry ticket is valid for the whole day, so you can come in for a bit, leave for lunch or ice cream by the river, and go back in the afternoon ...

Wow et Wow musée avec beaucoup de trains et beaucoup d’informations historiques. On peut même visiter des wagons et voir des intérieurs reconstitués comme à l’époque . Nous avons aimé notre visite et le musée est dans le Old Sacramento donc on peut visiter le quartier par la suite .

I walked through it with my 5 year old grandson. He went through parts of it twice. We also watched the short movie and shopped in the gift store. It took about 2 hours, but you might not love it as much as we did! But, you might.

No, this museum is not a working railroad. However, the Amtrak to the bay is located about 1/2 mile from the Museum...and that will get you to/from SF in one day. Uber/Lyft from museum to Amtrak is only $7!

If you don't mind walking. You can park at Mall parking for Macy's and walk under the pass and get free parking. Don't forget to validate at Macy's.

Last time I went adults I believe were $12.00, kids 6-17 is like$6.00 and kids 5 and under were free. It's worth it though really. I hope that helped.
