Not sure I've ever given a One star - but for $20 this was an enormous disappointment. First, 1/3-1/2 of the floor space was closed for an exhibit change out (comes with a free return visit, though as an out of towner that's of limited - though no expiration date - utility) More importantly, what's here is of the boring, overly conceptual preachy vein. This is how x group has been oppressed - oh yes, constantly. Ever so popular. I don't dismiss the validity of the situations, but merely bemoaning the fact and translating that into mixed media doesn't necessarily equal art. Guernica this is not. What's more, there is not much even of that, and a lot of wasted space. Rather intrusive hawk like minders/observers too - perhaps they've had problems (?) I just can't see a reason to do this stop and, as noted, you get a much much richer experience at SFMOMA. Or just buy some street food and walk around downtown San Jose - better way to spend the money.

I experienced a storm of mixed emotions after visiting the exhibition at the San Jose Museum of Art.

Each hall has an exhibition dedicated to the difficult path of immigration, with violations of human rights, audio recordings of eyewitnesses... there is no end to them, from hall to hall... examples of discrimination against one another. In the center of the hall on the second floor, the entire floor is covered with damp soil. On top of the ground lie, like slabs, in deathly silence, cards with the printed names of dead people.

You begin to read the history of each of these people and you experience chills on your spine... this did not happen just 100 years ago, but is happening today and continues to happen...

"Died while harvesting after receiving sunstroke from working all day at a temperature of 40C.
Died from an overdose of pesticides and herbicides... in drinking water...
Died from chemical burns...
Died from poisoning Parathion... Dinosep... Omite CR..."

All these people have in common is that they are all illegal immigrants who worked on American farms and plantations.

Are you saying slavery is abolished?

Think twice.

We go into a dark room and there is an exhibition on the entire wall, with excerpts from the trial... when, after the abolition of slavery, people were denied citizenship. Where is the logic? Are some more straightforward than others in terms of rights? Some sailed to the continent, evading persecution, and on the ground created even worse conditions for the local and non-white population?

And so every exhibit... with the voices of people... and this is either a child or entire nations...

I sat in this dark room full of stars, and tears rolled down my cheeks... pain... sheer pain... and behind each of this pain is human destiny and this is in our modern realities...

Interesting point of view...

“I used to believe that people could be equal, but, in fact, I know that people will never be equal.”...

I increasingly hear the same thoughts from other people. The land of opportunity works while you're talented and young, but as you age into your own retirement and are crushed by medical bills, it's no longer an option.

All these people believed in a land of opportunity where everyone was equal under one God. All I see is division and control.

In the end it all comes down to one thing, what will I tell God when I see him.

Don't bother. I guarantee that when you go it will be closed. They're always closed. Just when you finally get there it's closed for some reason or other. Go to the Triton, they are open.

Not much displays. No meaningful art pieces to see. The $10 admission is practically a donation. If you are hoping to see some arts, you will definitely be disappointed.

New to modern art, I very much appreciated the tour guides and their help in approaching the exhibits. A+ for them and for the work of the museum.

Great experience. When we went kids under 17 were free and if you an educator you can get in for free as well. Good exhibits, that adults and kids enjoy together.

I found a bit pricey due to the size of the museum. Although I did enjoy the exhibitions there are several other larger museums that are free entry. I would still recommend a visit specially because of the quality of the artworks and the content in the collection.

this is a great museum that is very easily managed within a two hour time period. There is paid parking near the building you are located in downtown San Jose So no matter what you will have to pay for parking. The museum entry price is very reasonable additionally parking fee is reasonable as well and of course much cheaper than going to see a museum in San Francisco city. This was my first time at the museum and I was very impressed at their exhibitions and will definitely go back once exhibitions are changed I highly recommend

I enjoyed my visit to the two flloor art museum in downtown San Jose area.

There was an impressive special exhibit called withdrawn Arms. Per the museum web site: "In 1968, at the Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City, San José State University runner Tommie Smith raised a gloved fist during the medal ceremony to protest human rights abuses around the world, and to bring international attention to the struggle for civil rights in the United States.".

There was also an impressive textile exhibt.

Also, there was some impressive mud art by Woody de Othello called Breathing Room.

While a smaller size art museum, the collections were impressive.
