There are scheduled tours but you can show up and purchase the tickets. They run every 15 minutes

Both tours are guided with no spontaneous exploring inside the house. The tours are on a tight schedule and you may feel rushed. I preferred the extended tour better than the main tour. There were too many people on our main tour to keep up to and hear the guide. The extended tour had fewer people and the pace was more relaxed.

I didn't go but i enjoyed the tour without it anyways.

We flew from Las Vegas to San Jose 65$ on Southwest about an hour flight.

You can but at the door, but it’s a timed entry system to the mansion. If you’re visiting on a certain date and working to a timeframe for your visit, really suggest you prebook tickets. Otherwise you may find yourself waiting around or killing time until the next available mansion entry time slot, and there really isn’t a lot to do while waiting.

You can stroll through the garden and around the buildings. You can also visit the Winchester gun Museum. Make sure you get tickets early they are often sold out.
