Be sure to leave enough time to visit this museum, situated in a 200 year old home. You can easily spend an afternoon here looking at their collections.

Jose Dolores Garcia built this house with love for his wife sometime around 1873. Jose was murdered in his saloon, it is said for developers to knock down the saloon and build on Forster and Camino Capistrano. In 1903 Albert Pryor bought the house from the garcia family. He had borders to help is income and pay for medical bills after he had a stroke. Mr. Pryor sat on the porch until sundown almost every day, rain or shine. Pryor's ghost has been seen limping around Los Rios and lurking in windows, as well as the ghost of the Garcia who was shot by Manuel Fellows while working in his adobe saloon. Garcia's ghost patrols the street looking for Fellows who somehow got out on parole

History of early settlers in the area. After the mission was established. But still good to stop and see.

My daughter and I toured the O'Neill museum, uncertain what to expect. There are four rooms decorated in the style of the period they are depicting. There are several other adobes but they are not furnished and locked up so you can only see them from the outside. There was a pirate exhibit in one of the adobes while we were there, and that was a lot of fun. There was a very knowledgeable docent at the exhibit, and we enjoyed listening to her historical tales of Bouchard, who raided San Juan Capistrano and other California settlements in the early 1800's.

Even the old wallpaper was copied and reproduced! It's the real deal. The furnishings are all appropriate for the period but the highlight was the wonderful docent/historian who gave his time so generously to us as he patiently detailed pieces of information about the restorations going on in town.

Our $1 admission fee was such a small fee to pay to tour this lovely 1870 museum house.

Being British we love our historic buildings and I in particular love the Victorian era. So whilst in the historic San Juan Capistrano it was a pleasure to be able to visit a fine example of a Californian 'Victorian' frame house dating back to 1870, The first to be built in San Juan Capistrano by Jose Dolores Garcia for his wife Refugio Yorba. The house is now the O'Neill Museum and is a beautifully preserved piece of history that is well worth a visit to see the house inside and out in all its glory.

The Historical Society has done well to ensure this building is kept in good condition. The displays inside of photographs as well as the building, its rooms and their contents. The additional buildings that are being saved / restored are a work in progress. It would have been great for the docent to be available early in the afternoon but she had left for the day. This meant one of the buildings was closed. Of the other two one was being restored and the other one had the original part saved but obviously more work to be done. Groups such as these need the support of tourists to visit and donate as cash is so essential to the work they carry out in maintaining and restoring historical properties and artifacts. They have done a great job so far. They also produce a sheet that gives some information about the five buildings - including the old jail! - they are responsible for currently. The historic area could be currently under threat from a development at the rear of the buildings. Politics aside a large development with tall buildings overshadowing the historic buildings in such close proximity could detract from the historic precinct. Hopefully it will be sorted out favourably.

Located near San Juan Capistrano's train stop, this well-restored little cottage is a peak into the past. It was one of the first frame houses built in the area. It's interesting to see how people lived in the late 1800's. It takes only a few minutes for a look-around. The $1 donation was worth the visit, when visiting the area.

This is a small house moved from original site in SJC. Well worth the $1.00 admission. They have all the history in frames on the wall in each room, which you can walk in all the rooms. It's located across the tracks from the train depot. Take the time to walk up and down the street. It's absolutely adorable.
