This hidden gem of a tour is a doubleheader highlighting both the unique natural beauty that the greater SF Bay Area has to offer (hint: get the heck out of the city) as well as a step back in time to the end of the 19th century!
Meeting in SF near the wharf was convenient and easy. Once seated on the very comfortable Sprinter van we were on our way through the city and down Highway 1, where the scenery changes quickly to coastal cliffs, oceanscapes and quaint towns. We stopped near Half Moon Bay for a seaside photo op, and at one point even saw a whale breaching near the coast! Soon thereafter we were in the Santa Cruz mountains surrounded by the forest that would be the setting for the highlights of the day. The Roaring Camp Railway Park is situated right next to Henry Cowell State Park, affording us the opportunity to take a walk through Cowell's beautiful redwood grove and muse through the visitor education center. Upon returning to Roaring Camp we ate lunch at the park cafe while waiting for our train. The food was surprisingly good considering the rustic nature of the camp being an old west historical park. The absolute highlight of the tour was the Redwood forest steam train adventure: a trip up and around the mountain on a narrow gauge steam locomotive from the 1890s. We grabbed seats on the open carriage of the old logging train for the best views and were shuttled up through stunning redwood groves, up and over hills and old terraces all while enjoying the commentary from the conductor/park guide. The ride was relaxing and scenic but never dull as the terrain required many tight turns, relatively steep elevations and track switches which kept things very interesting as well as educational. Near the top the train stopped and we all were able to get out to view an awesome cluster of redwoods up close and even take photos inside the trunks of the trees. Upon watching the other passengers filling the four cars, you could really see the wonder and joy on the faces of everyone from small children to retired seniors and everyone in-between. Even melancholic teenagers and jaded twenty-somethings put down their phones and were in awe of the beauty and experience! The entire train ride was a bit under 90 minutes, though it seemed to go by much faster. Once we disembarked we had a chance to look around the old logging camp and the different historical buildings. It certainly feels more like a small old west town than what one thinks of when hearing the word camp, reminding me of 1880s Hill Valley from Back to the Future III. From there we met up with our guide/driver Ken and boarded the van to head back to the city, all while enjoying the scenic views of Highway 1 once again. We got back a tad before 4pm, thus giving us plenty of time to experience more of the city.
As you can no doubt tell from my laudatory commentary I truly enjoyed this tour and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique bay area experience. It is highly family friendly and will keep adventurers of all ages intrigued and awe inspired. What makes this tour even more unique is your guide Ken, a Bay Area native (already a rare breed) who grew up in Santa Cruz and knows the area intimately. His unique perspective and knowledge of these hidden and underappreciated gems off the beaten path truly make this tour a special experience that you will long remember!

Planned this trip last minute wanted to find a place where nature is left at its most natural form. Sound I found this very interesting train ride adventure through Mother Nature giant redwood park by golden gateway tours. The trip was very easy to book went to trip advisor in less than 3 mins I am booked and done. I immediately got my online tickets and confirmation and was notified by email and text on my itinerary. We went to the meeting place next day 2351 Powell st SF. Parking was abundant and reasonably price at $ 14 all day parking which I think is a good deal in SF. Our tour guide Ken was already waiting for us we got there at 718am. He was already there waiting for us and greeted us with great enthusiasm and hospitality. We hopped in this very clean and very well appointed black sprinter van. He thought about everything there is water the van has enough chargers to charge our phones lol. The drive is awesome while getting out of the city nice scenery before we got to 1 where it all just got started. Our guide asked us if everyone is ok opened our doors asked if it’s too cold or not too hot anyone needed to use the bathroom hungry. Ken was awesome and very attentive to our needs. Then this is where it all begins the tour I was very fortunate to sit in the 1st row middle seat best seat in the house I have been to SF many times but the route from SF to Santa Cruz via 1 is to die for lots of coastline driving I have posted some pictures for you guys to see. Not to mention his voice projected really clear inside the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van without the annoying megaphone. The van was very comfortable and the windows are huge for the best possible view. Overall the train was really good surrounded by redwood Sequoias if you have not been there yet this should be on your bucket list. The weather is overll nice I also it’s seems like everyday here is perfect. I have overall enjoyed this trip and will do this over again in with all friends and family loved ones. The scenery is to die far you should try is yourself

We had a great time. The vehicle was comfortable and the views of the coast going down Hwy 1 were amazing. At Roaring Camp we were rewarded with a ride through the stunningly beautiful redwoods on an old steam train. There was a lot of history at the camp and the food there was very good.

Terrific experience! The bus was really nice and we left on time. We were very comfortable and the coast was so beautiful that the ride seemed to take no time at all. We took the train through the redwoods which was fun and even walked around the big trees a little bit. It was a great day!

We were picked up in a nice beautiful coach with luxury seating and a friendly host. We experienced an amazing ride down the coast to the majestic redwoods and a steam train ride. We stopped at the beach along the way for a bathroom break and to enjoy the beautiful ocean views. Definitely a must do.

We were picked up by a brand new Mercedes sprinter van. We drove down Hwy 1 to Pescadero beach for a short break. We then drove into Santa Cruz and then up to Felton. At Roaring camp we went exploring, had a nice lunch and then went on a steam train ride through the giant redwoods. After we went for a short walk through the giant trees. We then headed home. The driver was very nice and courteous. Had a great time. Loved it!
