The bathrooms at the pier are STILL closed ‘indefinitely’ even after a year. The water is STILL shut off. The Ocean Discovery Center is STILL closed since before the COVID nonsense.
BILLION$ for an high speed electric train wreck to nowhere, but port-a-potties for the taxpayers who pay for it all.
Absolutely pathetic, but completely expected!

Luego de Solvang llegamos a San Simeon y descansamos en un hotel de paso. Fuimos a la playa temprano y hubo mucha neblina, el agua fría pero apreciamos una playa llena de piedras pequeñas que cubrían todo el piso

We loved San Simeon it was close to the beach and had a boardwalk from the campground and day use parking area that made it easy to get to. The showers are token operated to minimize water, wait times. Bathrooms are flush toilets with sinks need to provide your own soap and towels. It is close to Hearst Castle, sea lion beach and the little town had an East side and a west side. One is s boardwalk along the beach we really enjoyed with shops and restaurants

We stopped here as one of our places to stretch our legs during our long road trip. We loved seeing all the wildlife and of course, you can't beat the sound of the surf. There were also a lot of amazing rock formations here to see too. There are a lot of hiking trails as well that we didn't explore due to time, but I would imagine you could spend a lot of time here just walking around or having a picnic. They have camping areas that looked nice and clean, I think this would be a fun overnight stop.

This review is for the hiking trails since we didn’t do any camping at the park. Our main challenge was finding the trailhead. The signage led us to the campground which does not allow day use. Thankfully the ranger was able to give us a map and show us where we could park to just use the trail. Once we were on the trail, it was great scenery moving from scrub oak up a hill through the campground and down into a green canopy of trees. The boardwalks were very helpful for staying out of the poison oak which was everywhere in the canyons. The last part of the trail was through a pine forest with an occasional ocean view. There were benches placed a random intervals along the trail. It wasn’t always clearly marked so the map saved us a lot of backtracking and wandering. Would definitely recommend for anyone who enjoys hiking.

Just one night in this campground with our trailer. Coin operated showers. A nice trail to the beach with the driftwood structures was all we could fit in. It was very serene...but we dont prefer that our site was a pull along site instead of a pull/back in one.

San Simeon State Park is an awesome park along the central Pacific Coast of California, the trail begins at Moonstone Beach with a wooden boardwalk above the crashing surf and beach. The boardwalk is about 3-1/2 miles before it ends at Leffingwell Landing. The beach is great for walking, as well. Lots of tide pools to explore or heading out to sea for swimming or surfing. Lots of overlooks along the boardwalk allow for just enjoying the coast Heading further north, enjoy watching the elephant seals sunning themselves at the viewpoint at the north end of the park.

We loved camping at the state park. There are no hook ups but the park was still quiet even with a few generator left running. It was very windy and cold at times. You can see the beach from the tent campsites and hear the waves crash. There is some road noise from hwy1. There is an abundance of poison oak near some campsites. Just stay out of the brush and you’re good.

But this a large campground with several sections including a less decry area on top of the hill.
Great fir camping w kids as has showers and ranger programs.
Beach is known for proximity to elephant seal activity. Proximity vs location is a plus here. Those seals are impressive but nothing you want to hang out with directly.
Nice to be... nearby.
Doesn’t happen often, but I caught a phosphorescent tide here once in early September. Yep.. each wave crashing shone blue green in the dark! Not common here, but you never know.. could happen again...

We went to San Simeon State Park in Central California. This time we saw lots and lots of elephant seals. it was fun to lsten to their noises; see them sleep and walk; see the young ones; and more.
We also of course loved our walks by the Pacific Oceans and the views are awesome.
This is an impressive state park. We were there Presidents Day holiday week-end.

Do you have to have a reservation to camp there or can you come on the same day to camp

You stand a better chance if you make a reservation at least 6months ahead of time. There is a possibility of" same day" being available due to cancellations.

i'm going to be taking my 20' trailer up in September. I have 2 friends coming down from the Bay area for a couple of nights. They want to be able to bring a tent and stay in the one site, is that permissible?

There is a maximum of two vehicles per campsite and I believe six or eight people. It seems they’ve been lax about this rule in the past, but are going to start enforcing it later this year. We were there in July and I saw signs posted that said until September they would be giving warnings about excessive people or vehicles in campsites and after that they were going to be enforcing the rules. Because they are becoming stricter with the rules I would either look up the restrictions on the website or call and speak with the Ranger.

Just received this question, too late, I'm afraid to perhaps help but, I do not think you need reservations. We did not have any, and we were fine. Can always phone ahead to be sure there isn't something going on the day/times you want to visit.
