I thought this was an amazing trip...but really ruined by a Hewlett Packard corporate day. The HP team took the open top carriages and then proceeded to chat and drink whilst those who really wanted to see the redwoods were consigned to covered carriages. I would recommend that for corporate events a dedicated train is used as the experience for families with children was not good

This place does not deserve to be in business. We booked the 10:30 train. At 10:30 they said there would be an hour delay. At 11:30 they said there would be another 45 minute delay. At 12:30 there were no updates and the people in the ticket office were clueless. It’s one thing to have a broken train but it’s unacceptable not to provide updates. They clearly don’t care about their customers at all. We left after waiting for 3 hours so they ruined our entire day. Don’t make this place part of your vacation plan unless you want a ruined vacation.

This was a fun train ride through a forest with trees 2,000 years old! Sit in one of the open cars so you can look up at them. The conductor was fun and full of wonderful information! He even played us a little bit of fiddle while we were stopped at the top. By the way there is a restroom at the top so don't worry about no restroom for 75 minutes! The ticket price may seem pricey but keeping this historic Landmark and Forest is worth it!

We canceled our trip to CA 3 weeks before arrival and they do not care--NO REFUNDS!!! BE DAMN SURE YOU ARE GOING BEFORE ANY PURCHASE!!!!!

This might have been cooler when my kids were little and amazed by everything. The train ride was meh. Nothing exciting to see. We were packed in there uncomfortably. They guy next to me was raping and there was no one around to deal with it. The "town" wasn't engaging. There is really so much more they could do with it.
Another disappointment was that the train was almost 30 minutes late. We got there early to make sure we wouldn't miss our time, especially since there are no refunds or exchanges - but no compensation for waiting around with very little information about when it would arrive. We had seen everything there was to see within 20 minutes, so we just waited...

Place could be rented for events and fairs. Some estern buildings are near the train station. Trip going the redwoods to the santa cruz boardwalk is nice! Hopefully they could improve their PA system so we could hear the conductor explain. It is also quite expensive for the train amenities. Nonetheless it was a fun experience. My verdict: recommended to try for first but not for the second time around. See images and videos for fuether information.

Good enjoyable experience. The ‘town’ is quite cool at the base where the station is. The ride itself is interesting. We actually preferred our walk the day before (the Highlight Trail Loop) which is free and so much more peaceful and up close with nature from the perspective of enjoying the state park. But if you want a steam train ride then this is fun. What was a real shame was that the commentary was pretty much pointless and mainly annoying because the speakers on the carriages are not in many places so you can’t here what’s being said and it becomes an annoying noise instead. That’s a shame and easily fixed if they wanted to do that and I hope they do. But all in all good fun.

There were no holiday lights except for a few houses and apartments that had been decorated which I could have seen for free. The route was through industrial and construction back sites and a Costco parking lot among other parking lots. The train was decorated and cider was nice once they refilled it. Santa came by and the Boardwalk was beautifully decorated but do not waste your money on the train.

We came on a weekday to find almost everything was closed. The “general store” was open for ticket collection when we arrived, but following the ride absolutely everything was closed - even though there was no mention of the store closing when we collected our tickets!
The train ride wasn’t a steam train, even though that’s the title of the ticket type. The woman on the station said that was normal for a winter weekday and this was in the website but when I looked back there was no indication on the website or booking emails that it would be a diesel engine as standard on a winter weekday, or that everything would be closed. It was also apparently too windy to even stop at the top.
The ride itself was good, the conductor was insightful and helpful, but overall we were disappointed with the lack of an actual steam train ride and lack of any of the other activities advertised - you couldn’t even buy a coffee or some duck food!!!

We have done the trip on two different occasions and both times the train times have been accurate. It is however in a lovely location with things to see and do in the area that the train starts and finishes and if your schedule allows it is worthwhile trying to allow a little extra time to have a look around. See other responses-bring a picnic lunch to save money! There are a number of wonderful markets and farmers markets surrounding the stop where you will board. With a little planning you can end up with locally grown treats that will enhance your experience.

Can you take a Lyft from Santa Cruz to roaring Camp Railroads. We are staying in Santa Cruz and won’t have a car.

I would suggest catching the train in Santa Cruz to Roaring Camp and then taking the train back. However, I guess it all depends on the number of people in your group. If you take the train, you won't regret it. My son loved it.

I would not recommend it. It is a bumpy ride and a lil crowded. It really just a time to appreciate the amazing beauty of the forest and take it all in. Eating would distract from that and might disrupt the other guests. There is a campground and nice areas to eat before or after the ride. Enjoy!
