“Worth the trip”

Good way to share a day with friends

First off; bring a designated driver and enjoy what Santa Ynez is known for and prepare yourself to plenty of tasting. There are many places to visit and plenty of tasting for enjoyment.

A word of caution... suggest not to travel Hwy. 154 after a day in the “loop” and instead use Hwy. 101, it is safer

A favorite location to drive and explore th latest winery and special offerings they may have. Pace yourself with drinking and driving - a driven tour might even make more sense! Enjoy safely.

Worth the trip

This wine trail gets less attention than others in California, but definitely worth a visit. It is less crowded and the wines range from exceptionally crafted to ready drinkable. The smaller vineyards take the time to talk to all visitors and share their stories. Lots to do nearby when you have had you're fill of wine for the day.

Take "The Loop" and enjoy a full day of fun

If you are leaving from Santa Barbara, go out Hwy 101 along the coast through Gaviota Pass (the only land level natural pass through the mountains). Spend the day touring through the Santa Ynez valley at wineries of your choice and return over the top of the mountains on Hwy 154 (San Marcos Pass). Hence, "The Loop".

I have been going to the beautiful rolling golden hills of Santa Ynez to taste the small vineyard's offerings since the 1980's. Sadly, most of my favorite places are no longer in business.

Current shout outs go to Carr Tasting room (not picturesque, but my personal favorite wine at the moment), Kalyra Winery (pretty location and good offerings last time I was there) and Firestone (beautiful setting).

I tour the wine trail as much for the scenery as the wine, so a trip into Los Olivos to walk through the town and visit a tasting room is a stunning drive no matter which road you travel.

worth doing if in the area, but...

Visiting Santa Ynez area wineries is worth doing if in the area. Our favorite was Foxen. But if you want to visit a different wine country and haven't committed to this area, I recommend Mendocino County, including Anderson Valley, Hopland, and Ukiah.

What a beautiful area of the country and a bit less crowded then other more well know wine areas in Ca. The wines are very good as well. Demetria is well worth making a reservation for a tour. Very friendly people in the middle of rolling hills and vines. Sitting under a tree watching the late afternoon sun was amazing.

Bridle wood winery

We visted this winery on the tail end of our trip up the coast - it is a beautiful place with a very hospitable staff. My husband and I enjoyed the grounds, sat under the abundant shade, and sipped our wonderful wine tasting!

Santa Ynez Wine Trail

This is a fun experience. The winery folks are super hospitable. Plus, there are a number of add-on's when you spend the day here - miniature ponies, The Mission, Wilding Museum, and, of course, downtown Los Olivos and Solvang. I love the wines, but when I need a break, I also take a look around before getting back on the trail!

Sunstone Winery

Visited this beautiful winery today and thoroughly enjoyed the wines, tasting room ambience , and scenic setting. Two tastings offered, the regular wines for $12pp, and the reserve wines for $15. A purchase of $100 waives the cost of tasting. We had friendly servers and we wandered around the indoor and outdoor facilities between each tasting, so we definitely did not feel rushed. The gentle rolling oak studded hills surround numerous outdoor tables with umbrellas, a grass area with croquet set, and wide covered veranda seating outside of the tasting room. The tasting room building is rustic and beautiful with handpainted walls, stone floors, and charming archways. We would highly recommend a visit here.
