Amazing how much they could pack into the old jail! Great historically relevant displays from pre-California history up to 1950's Western Cinema. For Gold County touring I could not give it a higher recommendation.

every one sure go and see this Museum. it's amazing place. it's small but has lots of history . . it's walking distance to and from coffee shops many other stores .

Such a great little historical tour of the gold rush, Tuolumne area and the jailhouse. Great exhibits, and amazing staff who will go to great lengths to answer all your questions. The only downside was that there was barely any signage making the museum hard to find, which means it doesn't get the traffic that it deserves. Highly recommended for history buffs. No entrance fee, but we left a donation.

This is a worthwhile stop for any visitor to Sonora. It is within walking distance of downtown, but check opening times before you go. Sonora being a Gold Rush town, the museum contains numerous artifacts from that era, many contributed by local residents. The Museum also has a new World War 1 section, dedicated in October, 2018, which again contains items donated by local families. Well worth a visit!

We arrived just as Bruce (docent) was opening the museum. The front of the building was the home of the sheriff. The jail was in the rear. Great history and lots of historical pieces. The gun collection is superb. We were intrigued by the story of Nancy Kelsey, the first woman to cross the mountains to enter the valley on their way to the Pacific Ocean. Bruce was excellent in telling us many details of the jail and about some of the characters who spent time in the jail.

My husband and I were staying in Sonora and one day it was raining so we were limited in what we could do that day. We very much enjoyed our discussions about the wild west and gold rush from Cookie. I learned so many things about that era that helped my understanding of the culture of that period.

This is a fine little museum with an impressive veteran's memorial. Worth the time and it is donation only, which is nice.

I love this museum! A fascinating look at our Native and then Gold Rush past. Check out the unique displays about the many cultures that have influenced our area, our motion picture history, and much more, located in the old time jail cells.

It includes the county jail, with cells outfitted with all the things prisoners used in those days. Spend a couple of hours here and learn the local history.
