This was our second visit to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. I enthusiastically recommend it as a bird-watching destination for raptors, marsh birds, and waterfowl. Be ready to take photographs from your car on the drive-around loop. The walking trail is great for photography, too. The sights, smell, and sounds, are incredible. Note that there are many other refuges, both United States and California that are nearby.

We went there on early December last year to see the snow geese. Although not yet the peak, it was already an astonishing scene. We also found plenty of other birds.

1st trip to the SNWF. The visitor center was being renovated so I did not stop there but went straight to the 6 mile loop. I got there right at sunrise and it was very peaceful place to watch the sunrise with the flocks of birds flying above. You have to stay in your car except for 2-3 places that are "park & stretch" areas. Really only one place where you can go to an overlook deck near the water. Some large areas of SNWF were dry due to the drought. I ended up going around the loop twice since I arrived early and actually found a lot more action the 2nd time around.

Nice place to bike ride while watching the wildlife. Bring your camera, pack a lite lunch, bring your binoculars you never know what you will see. The Eagles are back which is always a rare treat. The geese are plentyful. We spotted deer this time around. You can nature walk here as well but mostly we see folks driving the paths. Remember to clean up after yourselves & do not feed the wildlife please.!

We took a slow (VERY slow) drive around the 6 mile auto loop. There were countless varieties of water fowl: ducks (we especially enjoyed the N. Pintails, N. Shovelers, and Ringnecks), egrets, snow and Ross' geese. The raptors were everywhere - hawks, kestrel, and bald eagles. It was a photographer's wonderland. Highly recommend for those who enjoy nature. Best to first stop at the visitors' center if it is open. Not a great place to see cranes - those we saw were further east in the fields near the Llano Seco unit.

The 6.5 mile loop through this wonderful refuge is a bird lover’s delight, particularly during the winter months when migratory birds are present in abundance. Dozens of varieties of waterfowl, raptors including eagles, and others such as pheasant can be seen. Visitors must stay in their cars for most of the trip, with designated “stop and stretch” areas.
The visitor’s center is excellent, stop for information that will help you identify the wildlife. Admission is $6, but your National Park pass is also good for admission.
The Refuge is about an hour north of Sacramento, we’ll worth the trip for any nature lover.

This was our third or fourth visit to the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge. This time I had a good DSLR camera and a 300mm lens. The best time to see migrating birds is late-November into early-December. We probably should have been here a week or so earlier because many of the migrating birds were out feeding in the neighboring rice fields; but, there were still thousands of birds to see and photograph. The adventure begins at the Visitors Center where you can learn about wildlife found in the refuge, buy item, and make donation to help preserve the refuge. After a quick stop at the restrooms we headed out on the six mile auto tour. I like to keep our speed in the 3-5 mph range to maximize what we can see and not frighten the wildlife. At first we found Mallard Ducks and Mudhens. As we drove deeper into the refuge we photographed several hawks roosting in trees or hunting rodents. We spotted numerous egrets hunting on the edge of the road. We had a great time rolling slowly behind an egret walking and flying ahead of us. As I am writing this I am watching the pictures that we took on the tour being displayed on an electric picture frame. About half way through the tour we came upon a turkey vulture perched on a sign. Moving slowly and as quietly as we could, we were able to get some nice photographs. I need to study a couple of pictures because I think I caught a Golden Eagle in a tree. Towards the end of the tour we found thousands of snow geese.
Every trip to Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge is difference. We plan on going back in the spring to see butterflies.

Can you advise what time of day to go to see birds in late December? Would you pick sunrise over sunset or vice versa?
Also, is there a best time of day to see Bald Eagles fishing?

I heard that a lot of the geese have left the refuge already and the fly offs are not so spectacular this year. Comments?

I did notice an appreciably smaller crowd this year. Last year it looked like a geese convention. Mostly ducks from the vantage points around the water areas. We did see a high volume of raptors (mostly red tails)...with some frequency this year, though. It seemed unusual to see them packed in every 25 yards or so. I guess the feeding justified the close proximity. Always worth a peek if you are in the neighborhood but if it geese, not this year

The US Fish and Wilflife Service website (fws.gov) - Once there, type in 'Sacremento Wildlife Refuge' and you will be provided with an abundance of information.

Is it possible to get to the refuge from Willows without a car. My husband will be at the racetrack all day
