On our last trip to Napa, my wife and I had a wonderful experience at the Ma(i)sonry tasting room, which is now called RH Wine Vault and is part of Restoration Hardware’s campus in Yountville. We loved the chance to sample a variety of wines from small local producers, and since the tasting menu changes a few times each year, we were happy to come back and try new wines on this trip. I’m happy to report that this continues to be a great place to visit for wine tasting.

One thing that initially attracted us to RH Wine Vault and brought us there again this time is that they have longer hours for tastings than just about any other tasting room in the area. RH Wine Vault closes at 8:00 pm, while most tasting rooms end tastings by 5:00 or soon thereafter. In this case, we were arriving from the airport in the afternoon and wanted to start off our vacation with some wine, but our arrival time was just slightly too late to make it to most wineries before they would close. A 5:30 reservation at RH Wine Vault was perfect to do a wine tasting before dinner. It’s also nice that you don’t have to do a full wine tasting here if you prefer not to. They have an interesting list of wine by the glass or bottle if you just want to stop by for a drink. We’ve only done full tasting flights, but would also enjoy stopping in for just a glass.

All tastings are being held outside right now, which is great, because the outdoor portion of the property is beautiful, with gorgeous seating areas and landscaping, outdoor fireplaces, and twinkling chandeliers. RH Wine Vault was designed with taking advantage of the outdoors, so it’s a perfect outdoor venue for a wine tasting.

When we arrived, the staff got us settled in and brought us a complimentary glass of champagne while we decided which of the three tasting experiences we wanted to do. The tastings come at three levels for a tasting of red wines: classic ($50), connoisseur ($75), and collector ($100), and tastings of whites are also available at the classic and connoisseur levels. We were only interested in tasting reds, and noted that the classic and connoisseur options are a bit more varied, while the collector tasting features only cabs. In all cases, the focus is on small, boutique wineries, which typically have very limited distribution and don’t have their own tasting rooms. We both went for the $75 red connoisseur tasting, which is the same tasting we did last time and really enjoyed.

Our guide for the tasting was very nice, and he brought everything out quickly and got us nicely set up. They like to encourage you to taste the wines “blind” to see what you like, which essentially just means that they don’t like to provide tasting notes or really discuss the wines until after you’ve had a chance to try them all. However, when he came back after we had tried them, he was happy to go over more details of the wines, particularly the ones we really liked.

The four wines we tasted were: 2018 RAEN Fort Ross Seaview Pinot Noir, 2016 Blackbird Vineyards Blackmail Cabernet Franc, 2017 DiConstanzo Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2017 Complant Cabernet Sauvignon. We didn’t love all four of the wines, but we could appreciate that they were all of a high quality. The RAEN pinot really stood out to us, so we took a couple bottles of that one home, and the Complant cab was our second favorite of the group.

Tasting fees can be waived with wine purchases (I forget exactly how much you’re required to spend to waive each tasting fee). Two bottles of the RAEN pinot noir that we wanted to take home were just shy of whatever the threshold is, and they were strict with not allowing us to waive one of the tasting fees unless we spent a few more dollars to reach the limit. This was also the case last time we were there, and it’s a little annoying that they’re such sticklers on this. I understand if I’m far off from the amount needed to waive the fee, but it was such a small difference that it seemed stupid I needed to find another whole bottle to buy to make up the difference. We ended up deciding to buy one of their more affordable whites to add to our order, and it was nice that he offered us tastings of both the Spottswoode and Lail Vineyards sauvignon blancs that we were interested in before picking one to add to our order. Both were excellent, but we really loved the Spottswoode. By adding that to our order, we were able to have one of the $75 tasting fees waived.

Just like the first time we visited, we were both very happy with our experience at RH Wine Vault and will come back to try other new wines in the future. The staff here is incredibly nice, and the space is beautiful, with a great variety of interesting wines from small producers. RH Wine Vault has stood out to us twice now as providing a great and unique tasting experience within the Napa Valley.

My friend and I shared a bottle of Rose crémant.
All covid precautions in place. Wine flights can be combined with cheese and charcuterie otherwise no food options at the tasting room.

W heave frequented this spot for many years. It was a quirky art/wine spot years ago and now RH has blanketed it in sultry furnishings that RH is masterful at . We did a basic red tasting..enjoying the Lial cab and the Husch pinot the best of the 4 served . Old growth olive trees , crushed DG and a chandelier nestled between lush green walls, fountains and fireplaces transport you while you lounge. stroll through the furniture galleries or dine at the cafe ..we like R & D or even over Touristy Bottega a bit more than RH Cafe- it has few tables and still seems to need to work out kinks w service /food. Small portions/ high prices although presentation is an A. Cafe at auberge is by far better ..for views and service...or some
Of others mentioned . Enjoyed our time at the vault..you can make a whole day walking of the various Yountville wineries . Great town and great wines.

On previous trips to Yountville, my wife and I had been intrigued by the historic Ma(i)sonry building and its tasting room, and read a lot of excellent things about their focus on tastings of wines from small boutique producers from the Napa and Sonoma Valleys. On a recent trip, we made sure to add Ma(i)sonry (now called RH Wine Vault) to our itinerary, and it was well worth the stop. The wines we had there were some of the best we had on several days of wine tasting in the Napa Valley.

To start, it’s helpful to understand what Ma(i)sonry/RH Wine Vault is. Ma(i)sonry existed on its own as a tasting room before Restoration Hardware came into Yountville a couple years ago and developed their new RH Yountville campus, but Ma(i)sonry is now part of RH, in addition to the adjacent restaurant and home décor gallery. The tasting room includes indoor seating in the historic building and lovely outdoor seating areas. We visited all of the parts of RH Yountville throughout our trip, and although it’s all very nice, the Wine Vault is definitely the shining star of the whole thing.

One thing I really like about it is that they have longer hours for tastings than any other tasting room in the area, since they close at 8:00. Wineries and tasting rooms in Napa pretty much all end tastings by 5:00 or 6:00 at the latest, but I’ve always thought it would be nice to do a tasting a little more into the evening. We made a reservation for 6:30, and it was really nice to space out our wine tastings that day and have this one in the evening before dinner, rather than a packed schedule of day drinking. It’s also nice that you don’t have to do a full wine tasting here if you prefer not to. They have an interesting list of wine by the glass or bottle if you just want to stop by for a quick drink at some point in the day or evening.

When we arrived at RH Wine Vault for our tasting, we were given the option of doing our tasting in the historic building, or outside in the beautiful outdoor garden seating areas. Although it was an evening in January and was chilly, we really loved the look of the outdoor section, and there was a roaring fire going in the outdoor fireplace, so we decided to stay outside. The building itself is stunning, but on the inside, it’s kind of like a hollowed-out shell, with the original stone architecture juxtaposed against more streamlined, modern décor and ornate crystal chandeliers, which is all nice enough, but nowhere near as lovely as the landscaping, and outdoor living rooms set-up outside.

The staff got us settled in and brought out really nice cashmere blankets to help make sure we’d stay warm and comfortable throughout the experience. We were also given an introductory complimentary glass of champagne while we decided which of the three tasting experiences we wanted to do. The tastings come at three levels: classic ($50), connoisseur ($75), and collector ($100). The classic and connoisseur options feature one Sonoma pinot noir and three Napa cabernet sauvignons, while the collector tasting featured four Napa cabs. In all cases, the focus is on small, boutique vintners, which typically have very limited distribution and don’t have their own tasting rooms.
We both chose the $75 connoisseur tasting, and it was excellent.

They brought out the wines and said that since it was our first time there, they would encourage us to do the tasting blind, without knowing which wine each was, and that they would reveal their identities at the end. We did this, but I’m not sure that tasting the wines blindly really added much to the experience. For one, it’s not like they mixed up the order of the tasting as listed on the menu, so they were essentially just asking us to taste the wines in the order listed on the menu we had already looked at, but not look back to try to remember what they were. Additionally, since the wines were all from small producers, we didn’t know any of the wines in advance anyway. Having known which was which wouldn’t have affected our opinion of what we liked best. Either way, we really enjoyed the tasting, and when they came back to reveal what each wine was, we were also given a lot more information and education on each wine and its story, which was very enjoyable and nicely presented.

We really loved all four of the wines we tasted, but the Ferren pinot noir and the Flying Lady cabernet sauvignon were the stand-outs. We bought two bottles of the pinot noir and one bottle of Flying Lady to take home, which was enough to have one of our $75 tasting fees waived.

After we finished, we were both very happy with our experience and would definitely repeat it in the future. Prior to going there, I worried that it would feel more commercial than other tastings in the Napa Valley since it’s part of Restoration Hardware. However, it really was a high-quality experience with memorable wines, in a beautiful and unique setting. We highly recommend making a stop at the RH Wine Vault/Ma(i)sonry tasting room in Yountville.

Bespoke Wines

Ma(i)sonry is in a historically restored building and a piece of land owned by the family going back to 1904, one block up from the French-American top-rated in The World's 50 Best Restaurants in the world - The French Laundry. The founder Michael Polenske includes Ma(i)sonry in his Artisanal Brands collection called Bespoke, which includes the vineyards of Recuerdo Wines and Blackbird Vineyards which I wrote an article about two years ago. On the one hand, this place is beautiful and inviting. On the other hand, the tasting experience is a little weird. We were escorted upstairs, sat on velvet couches that overlooked the downstairs, with a beautiful crystal chandelier hanging at eye level. We chose the Classic Tasting (Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux blend). Nothing outstanding about any of the labels. There was 1 other person in the balcony room also tasting wine. The building itself is very interesting, but it's basically a shell without a vibe. Maybe we went at the wrong time of day?? I think we were there around 5:00. The wine list is extensive. Lots of pricey bottles! We might have been better off getting a glass or 2 and strolling around the grounds.

The building and grounds were a superb place for an evening wine tasting. The wines selected were unique and excellent, including offerings that are not available on the road in the Valley. Elias did an amazing job educating us on the chosen wines and made for a really memorable experience.

Pairing the tasting with dinner at R&D next door is highly recommended.

I like this place because the tasting experience isn't a walk up bar or a reservation only and your turned away. Grab a glass and take in the art and outdoor space. We have purchased a few fun pieces for our home and I will one day purchase the drunk sheep in the yard. . . I visit them on every trip to say "Hello".

I say this in a very positive way. It's difficult, if not impossible, to separate Ma(i)sonry now from RH Yountville. They are now all so integrated seamlessly. You'd think they are all one and the same (and maybe they are).

That said, Ma(i)sonry has its own distince history, being a historical landmark in Yountville long before RH next door. It was already a tasting room before RH, and in many ways it's still that. However, the complex is now more expansive and enticing inside and outside. We first ordered from just outside the building in the back at the satellite wine and coffee bar. You can also choose to order from the Ma(i)sonry's own wine list inside. After getting our order, we were able to walk around the exterior "campus" and take in all the intoxicating RH designed outdoor landscaped furniture and fireplaces (quite impressive).

We then walked in to Ma(i)sonry, greeted by a nice host who gave us a table to sit down and rest before dinner. From there we were able to take in the interior of this historical building. It's really very small, but enhanced with chandeliers (RH?), and people watch.

So, enjoy this historical wine tasting building inside and outside and pause to enjoy a beverage of your choice. We suggest one of their "bubblies" and their divine hot chocolate. Truly, it had to be the best hot chocolate I ever tasted. Now you do have to pay upscale for the hot chocolate ($5) and the glass of bubbly was $16. That's the price of quality in Napa Valley.
