A Nice Glimpse into the Life of a Man Who Helped to Shape the Statehood of Colorado

This museum was recommended to my friends and I by a waiter at the Breckenridge Brewery. It is smack dab in the middle of Main Street Breckenridge, yet few peole pay attention to it. This is the house of Barney Ford, an escaped slave who went on to ammass several fortunes in different industries and whom helped shape the Statehood bid of Colorado. He was a proponent of Black Suffrage and a conductor on the Underground Railroad. His story should be widely recognized. This is a great way to spend 45 minutes to an hour in Breckenridge.

Fascinating Museum!

Barney Ford really lived a fascinating life. Great tour for all ages, we were ages 8-68 and everyone thought it was really interesting. The kids were pretty surprised by all he had to go thru in life.

A must see home in Breckenridge

Finally came to see it -

Have no idea why it has taken us 15 years to visit this well restored home. Guide friendly and knowledgeable- takes 45 minutes- hour to see.

Short but interesting

This place is very low key and right off Main St. There was one guide who was very knowledgeable a out the house and the Ford family. It was a nice, quick stop in and super interesting to hear about Ford's life in and around Breckinridge and Denver.

Excellent Display of A Rags to Riches Story from the 1800s Breckenridge

We have walked by this small museum for years without stopping but decided the time was right. This is an excellent exhibit detailing the life of a former slave who, through his hard work and determination, rose from rags to riches, starting many businesses throughout the country before settling in Summit county in his later years. Excellent presentation and the exhibits are in good condition; don't miss the short video on the former owner's description of restoration and determination of some of this historic aspects of the house and grounds. Only takes a half hour or so to do the entire exhibit - don't miss it!

Amazing story and FREE tours 10am-3pm daily!

I can't believe I never stopped here before. This short and FREE tour is wonderful! Soon to be featured on Rocky MTN PBS in Nov. Barney Ford was a freed slave that made his fortune & lived in Breckenridge for awhile. He was one of 16 to found our wonderful state of Colorado! So much history here that I was completely unaware of til now. The home is a wonderful representation of life back then. Can also be rented for weddings/events. The tour was excellent and very informative including the historical tidbits about the town as well. Don't miss this stop!

What a story!

Sort of stumbled upon this place and really appreciated that they had figured out how to safely open during the pandemic. The story was fascinating and very unexpected! As a fifth grade teacher from "back east", there were so many elements of this story that I found surprising! The docents seems quite knowledgable and the house is lovely; definitely make a contribution, as they seem to exist on a shoestring. Not a place for young kids (of my not-very-interested-in-history husband).
