Mount Blue Sky will be closed to motorists and cyclists until Memorial Day Weekend in May 2026. When it reopens, make sure you have reservations to drive past the "welcome station." If you don't have reservations you will not be allowed to proceed.
Mt. Blue Sky is a high altitude experience. Two alternative drives are 1) Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. The road reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet (3,713 meters). Trail Ridge Road is usually open from Memorial Day Weekend to some time in October. Get reservations ahead of time at Recreation.gov. 2) Pikes Peak Tollroad. The summit of Pikes Peak is elevation 14,115 feet (4,302 meters). Reservations are required to drive on the road to the summit. To be guaranteed of reaching the summit (rather than a turn-around location below the summit) plan you trip for Memorial Day through the Fall season.

Had the pleasure of being guided by Kristina through Red Rocks Amphitheater. She was knowledgeable and made you feel like you were walking around with your friend! Highly recommend her! Instructions for meeting are very clear and this tour is a good idea to take before you actually go for an event; she gave us many tips on how to make our trip here next time very efficient and fun. Thank you!!

If you are a passenger and you don’t get carsick, you will have a spectacular time! If you are a driver, well, you will only see 10% of the scenery whenever you make a pitstop and 90% of the drive you will be focusing on the road so you don’t end up on the news! Bah! Put your best driver forward….
Personally I would not trust anyone other than yourself, or a Colorado native or transplant, to drive you up this mountain, unless you have friends who are professional drivers… Mt Blue Sky is closed for road repairs all of 2025 so you have time to better your driving skills….
Lastly, if you are having to chose between this and Rocky Mountain National Park, go with RMNP 100% - there are more pull outs, more trails, more viewpoints, better ranger stations and facilities and in overall better scenery. It’s beautiful on Mt Blue Sky but RMNP is a superior trip.

There’s something for everyone on the way to the Mount Blue Sky summit. Chance to hike around Echo Lake, drive up the switchback road to the summit, experience the thrill of seeing Mountain Goats and Rams along the way. Be sure to bring warm clothing as the temperature drops as you rise. Bring water and snacks too if you’re going to hike any distance. The altitude gains to 14,000+ feet.

Amazing view and since the entry is timed there isn’t too much traffic or people. I did feel out of breath when walking up to the summit from the parking lot, but it was better when I focused on breathing long deep breaths.

Please leave your drones at home. They suck and you suck for taking advantage of such a pristine environment. If you start a forest fire or contaminant a fresh water lake will you feel bad? Obviously you don’t have that thought

Pictures don’t do this justice. It’s a slow drive to the top, but well worth it when you get there. Dress warm because it will be cold.

Beautiful area! Drink plenty of water and wear/bring the appropriate clothing. It was very windy and cold on our visit in June at the top but when we entered from Idaho Springs it was warm.

Mount Blue Sky, formerly Mount Evans, is a stunningly beautiful scenic byway. Advanced, timed entry reservations are required to drive to Mount Blue Sky. Except for $2 recreation fee, it is free for National Park Pass holders. There is a Junior Ranger Badge opportunity.
Aside from various hiking trail stops, the first stop is Mount Goliath, which has easy, enjoyable walking paths and a small , staffed visitor center. Great stop.
Summit Lake Park is a great stop on the way to the summit. Walk to the partially-frozen lake or on one of the other trails. Lovely flowers flourish in the short summer. Stay on the path so as not to trample them.
The drive to the summit passes areas of snow left from the winter. The drive is for careful, confident drivers with a tank of gas. The summit area contains many yellow-bellied marmots, mountain goats, and even bighorn sheep. The hike to the summit is well worth the increased altitude and walking over rock-filled path. The view above North America’s highest road is breathtaking, memorable. Truly Kodak worthy.

Mount Evans near Denver is a stunning escape into nature. The drive to the summit unveils breathtaking views, and at 14,264 feet, the panorama is simply awe-inspiring. Surrounded by wildlife and alpine beauty, it's a must-visit for nature lovers seeking a quick, unforgettable mountain getaway!!

What are the odds that I’ll experience bad weather on the mountain between noon and 2pm in late June?

Yes, dogs are allowed but only on leash. However, the trail to the summit from the parking is quite narrow and steep (and sometimes icy) so it would be difficult to go there with your dog. And there are mountain goats around, so your dog may be nervous...

About 1.5 hours. But the drive up the mountain to 14 thousand feet takes an hour too. This road is narrow and no gaurd rails and lots if switchbacks. You have to go slow

Since Mount Evans is part of the National Forest System, will a senior NP pass get you in rather than the fee per person? Thanks for the information.

About an hour to Idahoe Springs and another 30 minutes up to the top of Mount Evans parking lot. Then you can go on a little hike to the summit. Remember WATER , sun protection and change of weather - always have a jacket in the mountains!!

Going to be there in June on motorcycles. Can motorcycles drive up the mountain or only cars?

I'm late in responding, but the following roads are still closed due to heavy snow this season. Motorcycles are common and fine. The following roads are mostly still weeks (or more) away from being open:
– State Highway 5 Mount Evans
– State Highway 82 over Independence Pass between Twin Lakes and Aspen. (Scheduled to open in early June.)
– Trail Ridge Road between Estes Park and Grand Lake (Rocky Mountain National Park)
– Kebler Pass in the Crested Butte area (Scheduled to open late May or early June)
– Cottonwood Pass between Buena Vista and Gunnison County. (Scheduled to open Saturday, June 22)
