We have been vacationing in Colorado for the past 19 years. We stumbled onto Melanzana about 15 years ago and have stopped in and purchased products for ourselves and as gifts pretty much every year. We did not make it up to Leadville the last few years so we were excited to hit up the store this year. We walked into the store and we were the ONLY customers in the store. To the right, there was a rack of maybe 30 items (which were listed as seconds) with 1/2 being the same hideous color hoodie and only 2 pairs of pants.
When we tried to go to the other side of the store where there were jam packed racks of everything imaginable, we were asked if we had an appointment. We said “an appointment? No we don’t”. We were then told that we could “look” at the items but could not purchase anything without an appointment. The next appointment availability would be April 2025. SERIOUSLY?
Their products were way overpriced to begin with but I love to shop local businesses so we have always tried to support Melanzana. I like my previous purchases but I am DONE with Melanzana
Hey Melanzana……your stuff was nice but it is not this “you need to make an appointment 8 months out to buy anything” nice. Tourists don’t stand a chance of buying from you. With the economy going the way it is, I hope you can stay in business with this ridiculous business practice.

To attempt to buy local outdoor clothing with the same arrogance and exclusivity as rolex, gucci or other pretentious brands is a sorry state of the new normal.
one expects simplicity from a normal company.
Thank goodness for plenty o indy competitive brands who make shopping a joy, don't use FOMO as a marketing tool... and clearly allow locals to make appointments and sell the goods at 3x markup on posh websites and other resellers... very disappointing and eventually the model will implode as tastes change and visitors realize that other options are quite good without the "we're so cool... you can take it or leave it" attitude.

I’ve actually never been to the shop myself, but some friends of mine bought me a hoodie from there this past summer as a present and I only wore it a few times (didn’t ski in it yet) and a small hole where the seams meet on the front left shoulder developed. I didn’t want it to get any bigger so when I called and told them, they said it didn’t require an appointment but that I would still have to pay to have it repaired even though it was brand new and barely worn which seems a little off to me if they are advertising hand-made products with a super long wait. I would expect the product to be either more durable or they would repair it for free. It’s not like I used it all ski season. Luckily it’ll only cost about $5-10 but the other option was to buy a patch from them and do it myself… lol a little disappointed with my first Mellie but I will probably be back depending on how the repair goes.

Just checked appointments into January 2024 during August 2023. Waited a few days after initially checking on available times to coordinate appointments with out of town friends while we will be there and then the entire second week of January disappeared. This is the most ridiculous system to buy clothing. I like the clothing they make but it's not worth the hassle to try to buy it. Makes one wonder if everyone who books appointments actually shows up which then blocks other potential customers. Not worth my time to continually check for cancellations. There must be a better way to either produce enough inventory or have a better system to make appointments.

Hey there - We're sorry you don't jibe with appointment shopping. It's not ideal for us either, but this system allows us to control our inventory. We sell as many garments as we make each day, just with enough of a buffer to have a full inventory of sizes and colors. Good things in life take time, and we hope folks understand that we are working super hard and doing our best!

Learned about Melanzana hoodies when my son gave me his as it was too big. When traveling from Denver to AZ a couple of days ago, we stopped in and were able to pick up one for my son from the overstock rack and my wife snagged one for herself. Could have also picked up a hat and some socks but we stuck with the two hoodies and were happily on our way! Listen to their explanation on their business model and I am sure you will agree it is best for customers and the business. Kind people and a great product! Thanks

My wife and I shopped at Melanzana on our drive back from a hiking trip in New Mexico. It was about 5 pm, an hour before closing. I was wearing my Melly, as I seem to do all day, every day in cooler weather.
As we were looking around, an employee approached us and asked if he could help. We talked a bit, he gave us some helpful advice, and was very friendly, as were all the employees we spoke with.
We bought several Mellys. When my wife noted that the sleeves of her new Melly were several inches too long for her, the clerk immediately offered to have the sleeves custom shortened and rehemmed. A few minutes later, the job was done, and we were on our way home to Fort Collins.
We couldn’t have been happier with our visit or more favorably impressed with Melanzana employees.
Be advised that shopping at the main shop requires an online reservation. But if you don’t have one, you can still shop in the overstock area. You might find something that suits you.
My wife, very experienced with clothing, materials, and sewing, says that Melanzana’s product quality is outstanding.

Visitors have NO CHANCE of buying new clothes from Melanzana if they happen to learn about the shop/clothes while they’re in town. It really sucks. It also sucks that only two items can be purchased per appointment visit. The desire to keep from overworking employees combined with maintaining the exclusivity of the product seem to be the main reasons for the policies, but I could be missing others. I’m ok with the rationale. I just think the model of achieving these outcomes is seriously flawed. It leaves no wiggle room.
On the positive side, my wife and I each own a Micro Grid Hoodie V2. We like them (except for the pilling) and wish we could buy our kids one. But alas, that can’t happen since we don’t live anywhere near Leadville.

We stopped by because we had shopped here two years ago and really enjoyed it. Now, though, you can only shop by appointment, and the next appointment was more than two weeks out. Of course, had I known this, I could have made an appointment before we left for our trip, but we didn't know. Pretty disappointed.

Sorry you left disappointed. We aren't stoked about appointment shopping either. Before appointment shopping, there was zero inventory and most folks left empty handed. Now customers are guaranteed a pleasant shopping experience. Sad to say, but without the appointment system you would have still left disappointed. We would love to welcome you back into the store. Leadville is a fun place to wander, with great hiking nearby. I've been wanting to purchase a hoodie from Melanzana for a while and was thrilled to finally get to the shop after the Covid closure (luck was not in my favor for their winter lottery). I LOVE the cobalt blue hoodie I purchased! Snagged a beanie for my husband since he was interested in the quality of products and their business model.
I totally get people's frustration with availability of stock but...this store is what an ethical clothing store should look like. Not hundreds of items on the rack, many of which get thrown away in the end. Not endless factories overseas that trap workers in unsafe conditions. I'll deal with lack of availability in order to support a great business that supports the community it's in, as well as treats their employees well. Plus, those hoodies are totally worth it.

I am thrilled to see the owner and staff taking their customers frustrations seriously. A lot of us die hard customers have been upset about lack of availability of product and the whole shopping experience. Recently Mele has made a genius idea of opening their online shopping again in a very creative and equal opportunistic way making things easier for local and very distant customers to get a fair chance and a boutique like shopping experience without the pressure of grabbing product off the rack as others reach for it. I am not sure the limit on how many items may be purchased with their lottery system but it sure beats how things were. Thumbs up!

I recently purchased a women’s medium port colored hoodie. Once I got home I realized I should have gotten a small. I definitely have the receipt and have not worn it other than trying it on one time. My question is can I exchange it by mail or do I need to come stand in line again?
