A little gem
2021年10月 • 夫妻情侣
Fabulous little gem of a place owned by Denys Eyre Bower who was an art dealer and collector. This houses a super collection of Japanese, Egyption, Stuart and Jacobean and Buddhist artefacts as well as being an interesting house, with various periods reflected including an extensive Victorian kitchen. We were also lucky to catch Graham Dixon talk about Buddhism which was both interesting and informative.

Thank you so much for this review, Denys was indeed an avid collector and we are proud to display some of his many objects and artefacts here at Chiddingstone Castle. We are delighted that you were able to hear Graham’s fascinating talk about our Buddhist collection, and I have passed your kind comments on to him. Many thanks.

Poor Afternoon Tea
2021年9月 • 好友
We visited the tea rooms on Sunday for afternoon tea, which we had pre-booked and paid for. The setting is ok... a little courtyard with some tables and chairs, but that’s about the best of it, I’m afraid. At £16.50 each, we were given 3 small finger sandwiches each, 2 small scones and a piece of cake. Nothing was replenished. The service was barely adequate... we felt like we were asking for too much when we asked for more tea and jam with the scones. The staff did not appear overly helpful or welcoming! I felt quite strongly that the website is misleading with the pictures and description of the afternoon tea offered here. I know it’s not The Ritz, but it really is very overpriced for what you get, and the staff could definitely be more friendly. We were disappointed but have had to put it down to experience as we had paid upfront.

Thanks for this review, we were a little surprised as we have already responded in a lengthy correspondence regarding your experience. We are sorry you felt your tea was disappointing. We serve a large number of afternoon teas and very rarely get complaints regarding the quality and quantity of the food, so were concerned and surprised that you were so unhappy. Apologies if you only received 3 sandwiches each, this is usually 4. We would have been very happy for you to ask for more if you felt this wasn't enough. All our jam is homemade so the consistency differs, the cream is clotted cream from Devon, in the past we have had wastage so serve one pot per person, again we would have been very happy to give you more if you had asked. All our scones are freshly baked every morning, and cakes are homemade. I have spoken to the ladies who served you and they were upset to hear that they were looking fed up, we have a good ambience in the tea room and all staff really enjoy working there, so we are surprised that this didn't come across! It would have been good had you brought your concerns to our attention on the day, I feel sure then our tea room manager could have dealt with any issues appropriately and you would have left happier. Kind regards.

A lovely day out
2021年9月
Having started doing a family tree I discovered the Streatfeild family and Chiddingstone. A trip was planned. I do find it hard to understand why the castle (not really a castle but a family home) would be open Sunday to Tuesday but the local pub was open Wednesday to Sunday.
Anyway....good sized car park that has an honesty box and a request to leave £3 or more. The house was interesting with lovely views over the surrounding countryside. Do not expect well laid out gardens to the front as just a lot of grass.
Paid for 2 to look round (£19). The place was owned for a short period by Denys Eyre Bower. He collected Egyptian artifacts, Japanese artifacts and Buddhist artifacts, There are rooms dedicated to all of these and it is all very interesting. However he owned it from 1955 to 1977. Previously it was owned by the Streatfeild family from the early 16th century until the end of the 19th century - nearly 400 years. However there is one room dedicated to the Streatfeild family with next to no pictures and just a time line. Would have been a full 5 if more about the people who really got the house going,

poor

We were very disappointed with the value we got for our Virgin experience Tea in a Castle. When I exchanged my experience for a tea at a London Hotel to one nearer home because of covid I was not told that the all in all the total cost was tea consisted of a look round the castle and tea would consist of a scone, jam cream and pot of tea. To get a traditional tea we had to pay £9.50 extra each. So altogether we paid £55 for a tour round the castle (I had been before) and a tea which consisted of 4 finger sandwiches each, a scone with jam and cream, and a piece of victoria sandwich and a drink each. Very poor value, and a disappointing 70th birthday gift.
I see the Virgin web site has now amended the details but I this was not the case when I booked, nor was I told when booking up.

I'm sorry you have given Chiddingstone Castle a poor review and that you were not happy with your "Virgin Experience" gift. As I explained to you on the day, this particular voucher entitles you to look around the castle, a lovely historic house, and all the amazing collections of the last private owner, Denys Eyre Bower, and a cream tea. The voucher does not include a full afternoon tea, and when booking on the Virgin Website it is made clear in several places that "you'll enjoy your scrumptious cream tea for two, including two homemade scones, Cornish clotted cream, homemade jam, and a choice of tea or coffee in the delightful vintage tea room before a self guided tour of the castle." I am surprised that you say the Virgin website has amended their details as as far as I am aware this has always been the case. Apologies if you felt this was not made clear. Kind regards.

Worth a visit
2021年9月 • 夫妻情侣
Chiddingstone Castle is a lovely little place to spend a few hours. The staff were all very welcoming. We had lunch at the cafe which offered vegan sandwiches, cake, and the choice soya and oat milk. Wendy, the waitress who served us, was so lovely and very helpful with the vegan options. The homemade blackberry flapjack was very good.

We had a wander through the house and grounds, then went for a countryside walk which passed through pretty Chiddingstone Village. We downloaded the 4 mile walk map from the Explore page on the website but it turned out to be a lot longer... and we don't think we took a wrong turn (the guidance notes could have been a bit clearer).

Lovely day out to the castle. Viewing was easy and very interesting and we finished with a lovely cream tea though disappointed that they did not have any crumpets.

Chiddingstone Castle
2021年7月
We visited Chiddingstone Castle during a week off work and not holidays abroad and I have to say we are glad we did, there is so many attractions on your doorstep if you look for them
The staff we interacted with were pleasant and helpful throughout our day there
the Castle and grounds are lovely and we truly enjoyed strolling around at a leisurely pace for the time we were there
If you like your history there are plenty of facts to find here as the castle itself dates from the early 19th century, with some parts dating back to the early 16th century
Since 1977 it has been held in trust for the nation by the Denys Eyre Bower Bequest, Denys Eyre Bower (1905–1977) a colourful character who I was not to familiar with prior to our visit and I enjoyed reading all about him
If you visit be sure to stop in the lovely tea-room serving refreshments and hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year.

Charming
2021年6月
My husband and I were married here 19 years ago so Chiddingstone Castle does hold a special place in my heart. There have certainly been some changes since we were last here but all for the better. It was lovely to see a few more rooms opened up and on display. The grounds are lovely and the orangery (which was being renovated when we were last there) is beautiful. We stopped for a quick drink and gorgeous ice cream in the tea room, which was served by friendly staff.
Chiddingstone Castle, and the beautiful village of Chiddingstone are well worth a visit.

No wheelchair access
2021年5月 • 独自旅游
I took my nan to have a look around this morning as she was very excited to go,I was disgusted at the non disabled facilities, the whole place is large gravel and I struggled to push her wheelchair through it.
We couldn't even look around inside as we couldn't get up the main stairs

I was very surprised when I read this review, and sorry to hear that you experienced difficulties during your recent visit. Surprised in that we have always had positive reviews from our disabled visitors. We certainly do have disabled access to the castle, we have a removable ramp at the main entrance, and this was in fact used several times on the day of your visit. The ramp allows easy access to the castle itself. I can only assume that you didn’t come to the main entrance as there is always a member of staff on the desk there who is able to get the ramp out for you. Once inside the castle there is easy access to all our collections on the ground floor, the door entrances are wide and the wooden floor is nice and flat. We also have a disabled toilet. To avoid using the gravel path if you wanted to get to our tea rooms, then the safest route is through the castle itself. We would not charge castle admission if you wanted to take this route. We are also very happy for you to drop any visitors off at the main entrance itself, before parking in the car park. I’m wondering if you asked any of our staff for assistance on the day, as all our staff are aware of the above, indeed I was working myself on this day and would have been delighted to assist. We would love you to return to the castle so you can experience all that we have to offer and see that we are indeed able to look after our disabled visitors. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.

Classic Car day at Chiddingstone Castle
2021年4月
Visited Classic Car event today at Chiddingstone Castle. Given Covid restrictions this was well organised with friendly helpful staff and volunteers. Enjoyed the cream tea which was very welcome. Can imagine that this venue will be a delightful day out when weather improves and thee Castle itself is open. Definitely going back.
