Interesting property- guided tours only. Woman architect lived there- all original furnishings including paintings, dishware, even bills to run the property.

Off the beaten track in rural Farmington, you will find the Hill-Stead Museum. It is a lovely Colonial Revival house on a large estate of trees and rolling hills. It is totally authentic having been turned into a museum in 1946 under the express condition that nothing should be moved, lent or sold. The guided tour was excellent, bringing a good appreciation of the original owners, their interest and the art works that they collected. The highlight is the small but outstanding collection of impressionist works by Monet, Manet and other important artists of that period. To my regret, no photographs of the interior and its content are allowed so I cannot show you any of the beautiful works of art. I would urge you instead to visit as you will find it interesting and enjoyable.

The house was built by architect Theodate Pope for her parents in the late 1800s, with rooms designed specifically to display their Impressionist art collection, which they had brought back from their grand tour of Europe, together with other works of art. Theodate instructed that the house had to be kept as a museum and the art and contents of the house had to be kept exactly as they were and not shown in other museums. Visiting here is quite unique as it is not a particularly grand house, and it is stepping back in time to when Theodate lived here. The docent was enthusiastic and made the history and art come to life. We found the experience more enjoyable and interesting than visiting an art gallery. Tours (only way to see the interior) start on the hour and it is first come-first served, and no bags or photography allowed. The sunken garden by Beatrix Farrand is an added bonus and the house is in a lovely setting.

The sunken gardens at this museum are beautiful and peaceful! If you would like to have a tour of the house, a docent is required to take you through. I arrived at 2:00 and one was not available to take me through, so make advanced reservations.

Surprising art museum. It used to be better. At our last visit 20 years ago it was an art museum in a historical environment. Now it’s a historical museum with some art. The art is spectacular (Monet, Degas, etc) but it’s too much focus on the historical (which lots of places have) and not enough on the art (extremely unique and amazing). Heck, The Great Wave they have isn’t even exhibited anymore 😞

Wonderful surprise! I’ve been visiting CT for years and just recently found this hidden gem. If you like looking at older homes and visiting art museums at the same time, this is a double header. Beautiful grounds, a lovely house tour, and conveniently located.

Beautiful sunny morning as we arrived at Hill-Side! We had bought advance tickets for the first guided tour of the day...and we ended up the only two on the tour. Our docent guide Lori was enthusiastic and friendly, sharing the story of Theodate Pope who designed the house and her parents who collected the art on display throughout. A most interesting story told in an extraordinary setting. After our tour of the house, we walked the gardens and around the house to fully enjoy and appreciate this museum. Kudos to the Hill-Side staff for maintaining this house museum and sharing Theodate's story!!

Without a doubt, the most underrated museum in Connecticut! It’s like walking into an art textbook, with amazing decorative arts abounding on the side. Everywhere you turn is a new wonder. My wife took my 10 year old son last week. They raved about it and we had to go this week. I’m glad we did! Congratulations to the docents.

this has instantly become a favorite. I tour homes a lot - love them but this place is special. the property & views are spectacular. I caught an early snowfall & like a fairy tale. the fine art beautifully displayed. the home & details & furniture & lifestyle. then add to this the family story & it's really special. can't wait to go back.

Fascinating collection of wonderful Impressionist art displayed in the hole of tge collectors. The art is accessible up close through small group tours led by guides.

Would like to know about a group tour, for a Garden Club members, maybe 8 - 10 people on a week day , what is the price of admission? Hours that tours are given.

They have a variety of tours. I took the basic 1 hour with a small group. There are more options than they list on the web site. You can call them or send email -- but they are busy in the summer with weddings so you do need to plan ahead.
