The East Haddam bridge is closed on Sundays (11pm) and all day tues and Wednesday’s. Today I arrived at the ferry on Chester side. About 20 cars in front of me. Literally waited for over an hour and a half for this crew to do this ferrying of cars. Watched them as they waited over on Hadlyme side to “have a full load “. I’ve lived and grown up as a child taking this ferry for over 60 years.
Never before have I witnessed such a slow ans sloppy crew and captain. When I finally got to board after waiting like never ever before I witnessed the captain having left the wheel ——-DIRECTING CARS ONTO FERRY. THEY have for DECADES -ALWAYS HELPED TO SPEED THE RIDE UP BY TAKING THE TOLLS ON THE BOAT FROM CAR TO CAR, AS IT CROSSES!!
With miles of cars backed up on both sides of the river I watched this one crew member saunter out off the ferry ——TO STOP EACH CAR AND TAKE THE TOLLS PRIOR TO LETTING CARS ON. INSANITY. WHICH IS WHY THERE ARE MILES OF BACKED UP CARS HAVING TO WAIT NOW FOE HOURS TO USE

DOLLAR SUPPORTED FERRY AND THEIR CREW.
MY ADVICE ON MONDAYS AND TUESDAYS ?? TAKE THE PORTLAND OR BALDWIN BRIDGE. YOULL SAVE TIME ANS $. Sickening to have seen this after taking this zippy ferry ride for decades.

We were told about the quick Ferry across the Connecticut river by the Gilette castle staff. The experience was great. The lady that took our money was quite friendly and personable. It sure is nice to see happy workers! The trip is quick and safe. We went over on foot, most drove a vehicle. It is quite affordable. The walk to the Pizza shop only takes 16 minutes from the Gilette castle side. On the walk there are beautiful homes and even a stream with turtles we watched. We would highly recommend this Ferry.

After completing my visit to Gillette Castle State Park, I though my trip to Old Saybrook would be east on R 148/82 (Norwich Salem Road), followed south on R 85 & west on I-95 west. However I just followed my GPS unit which took me straight to the ferry. The ferry can be from the west side of the castle.
The current ferry-The Selde 111-can accommodate 8-9 vehicles ( cars, vans & pickups) & 49 passengers. From east to west shores, the trip across the Connecticut River was in the neighborhood about six-seven minutes. During my crossing only one other vehicles, a mother and daughter, with the crossing smooth.
By using the ferry I probably saved about 15 minutes back to Old Saybrook, compared heading east. Cost of the crossing was $5.00. I recommend the ferry.

$5 per car (including passengers) - best deal in Connecticut. The ferry service is 200 years old and interesting. Make sure to take it from Chester to go see the Gillette Castle. It is at most a 7 minute wait for the ferry because it only goes back and forth across the river from Chester to Hadlyme (about a 5 minute ride). And the views are lovely.

We have been taking the ferry, often just to go to the other side and back, just to cross the magnificent Connecticut River, to have the air blow in our faces ...to gaze upward to Gillettes Castle... aaaah romance enhanced.
For $5 (6 weekends) you can cross the river from Hadlyme to Chester and then drive north about 18 miles to the Rocky Hill Ferry and cross back into Glastonbury and orchard country. Or, for the more adventurous for $2/person go over then $2 to come back just to ride ...oh frabjous joy calloo callay.....
Alas, this romance on the Connecticut closes November 30 but reopens in the spring. Do not miss this. We try to do this three season ...

Beautiful view on the Connecticut River, quick and easy transport to visit Gillette Castle. Affordable at $5 per automobile....well worth it!

Took this ferry to Gillette Castle. It is literally three minutes across the river but to me the $5 per car was worth it. 3-4 cars can fit on it along with pedestrians. Nice views. Something different than the 15-20 minute car ride. Would do it again.

Before the bridges, river ferries were used to cross the Connecticut River. Returning from Gillette Castle (only a mile away) my wife and I took the ferry and were pleased by the excursion. A quick ride, but a great view of the river and the castle.

Make this trip you will not be disappointed. We take our grandson there every summer.
