This tour was an ongoing interactive discussion of the ramifications past and present of Mrs. Stowe’s masterful and consequential novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin first published in 1852. With the exception of the Bible this was the number 1 selling book in the 19th century. The tour guide “Versatile” was remarkable! She not only presented the normal biographical facts of Mrs. Stowe’s life, her home in Hartford but solicited interactive dialogue among the tour group. This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience that I highly recommend to anyone wanting to further understand Harriet Beecher Stowe, her incredibly important novel and the impact it had upon our country’s history and the ramifications we are still living with today. BRAVO!!!

The house is next door to Mark Twain's, yet very different in architecture/design. I thought we'd learn more about the house than we did. It was an odd tour. We learned a little bit about Harriet's life, but it was more about the politics during that time. I don't know how to explain it, it was a little weird and not what we were expecting. We could have walked next door to take a pic of the house and not done the tour.

I loved my tour of the Mark Twain House and knew I needed to visit the HBSC too. This tour severely disappointed me and was very short and not worth the $20. The guides seemed to know little and were very unprofessional. I learned a lot more about them, their political views, and next to nothing about the author. This is a good time and place to learn about the history of racism, but only if adequate time is given to the house and its famous resident, which was sadly overshadowed by the self-aggrandizing tour guides.
The bookstore is remarkably political as well. I had trouble actually finding Uncle Tom's Cabin, but did find plenty of trite political material, including stuff that had little to do about race or slavery.

We had a private tour (meaning no one else signed up for that time slot). It was a traditional tour, lots of information, lots of reading of items on the walls. No time to go back through the house on your own. Would have liked to have known that ahead of time and would have taken a few more pictures or spent a bit more time reading the information.

Waste of money and time. I've read Uncle Tom's Cabin and came to learn more about the woman who wrote it and the time and place she lived. Instead I got a kumbaya group discussion with a bunch of tourists where we were prompted to reflect on how racism is wrong. Rather than provide context (slavery existed because it was profitable and became increasingly so in the run up to the civil war) any opinion that doesn't reflect modern sensibility was prefaced by being "problematic." This hesitation around suggesting any nuance or context prevented any honest conversation and I learned more from the few guests that provided a few historical facts the tour guide could not offer. The secondary guide that twice interrupted the main guide to suggest incorrect facts further suggested that unprofessionalism that now seems to rest at the core of the center's mission. Most of the house is exhibit space. If you want to better under Stowe and her times and work, luckily a ton of books better address the subject than this tour.

On one level, you can tour the house just from the standpoint of the author and her personal life because this is where she spent the last 20 years of her life. We saw a room where she hosted large family gatherings. Her brothers and sisters were well known for the good things they did in their community. Many of her paintings are displayed. We got to see one of her desks with letters scattered all over it and the floor (apparently, she was messy!).
But there is a bigger story about Uncle Tom's Cabin and the controversy the book generated when it was released, and how it was seen then and how it is viewed now. There is a small museum in one of the rooms that addresses this. The tour guide did a wonderful job, not just of giving us a tour of the house but also a "tour" of the ruckus this book raised and the culture of the time she wrote in. She was outstanding.

Tours are required for the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center and are recommended in advance via their website. They run about 45 minutes and are intended to be participatory. Fortunately, most members of our tour group had read Uncle Tom's Cabin and were familiar with the American history of slavery and willing to talk about it, adding an extra dimension to the stories. Photography is allowed inside the home, which is filled with furnishings of the time. We were so glad we went!
We combined a visit to the Stowe Center with a visit to the adjacent Mark Twain House; ample parking is available at lot that is well-described on the Twain website. (Both houses would be difficult for those with mobility issues.) The modest gift shop has books and unique items.

Harriet Beecher Stowe Cte sits on the same grounds as the Mark Twain’s House & museum. But it is a separate tour. Excellent building and worth a vivid.

I thought I was going to get a summary of daily life in the house as well as interesting facts about the items in the home. Unfortunately, this tour was mostly discussion with random facts. I also find the messaging a bit extreme and out of place. Just tell the history of the woman and her home. That's what people come to hear.
I also don't recommend "the farm" tour. It's mostly a neighborhood synopsis and given the cast of characters hanging out at the laundromat/liquor store/etc. across the street, you won't be missing much.

Unless you are wanting an insulting and condescending museum experience, stay away. The tour guides and director are pushing propaganda. Stowe was an intelligent and fascinating person, a century before her time. The museum itself was an educational experience and well done.

Hello and thank you for your interest in the Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. At present, we don't sell tickets in advance. We will be glad to welcome you in July when you can buy a ticket at our Visitor Center. Please let us know if we can answer any other questions.
